General election 2024

What’s your plan for election night?

Pipsqueaker · 01/07/2024 21:03

I plan on settling down on the sofa at 9:45 in time for the exit poll.

I think I will watch on Channel 4. I normally tune into the BBC, but I find Laura Kuenssberg annoying and will be sad Hugh isn't presenting. So Channel 4 for me, as I like Maitlis and Guru-Murthy.

Pizza for dinner, with Baileys and Malteesers as the night goes on.

I’m in work on Friday morning (albeit from home) so I will try to head to bed by 3:30, as I’m hoping the result should be pretty clear by then?

Will probably wake at about 8, stick on Radio 4 and check out mumsnet before crawling to my desk with a strong coffee!

Watch the exit polls, go to sleep, wake up about 2am and watch until a satisfying number of well-known Tories have lost their seats.

Oh that’s a good idea, I hadn’t thought of napping before midnight!

We'll not be at home on election night(postal vote submitted last week).I reckon we'll head back to our hotel after the show we've booked then go to bed at normal time. Not staying up late and we can catch up with all the results in the morning.Boring I know.

Canadian876 · 01/07/2024 21:28

I just posted a question about this but didn't realise there was a dedicated board. I'm an early to bed person these days since being a mum and worried I won't last but desperate to watch it all champagne at the ready so I'm debating between sleeping 10.05pm - 2am or just staying up.

Thinking that going to sleep then waking up at 2 might make me feel worse?

Yes I’m not sure any more either! This article has made be think again:

Seems like plenty of excitement to be had right up until 5 am.

As much as I may want to sleep between 10 and 2, I realistically don’t think I will be able to.
I might take some flexi time and start work at 10. I could conceivably dress for work and draft some e-mails in the middle of the night, lie down for a sleep 5am - 9:30 and then log straight in at 10. Is that bonkers?!

I've wisely booked Friday off work this time.

I expect I'll be a bottle of red down by 10, and alternating shouting at the tv, frantically refreshing the stats online, and posting here/my other forum full of even angrier women.

I don't know why I do it every time. I'm hoping this year it'll be a better outcome.

katmarie · 01/07/2024 21:50

I too have booked Friday off. I'll be on the couch, with wine, laptop and tv watching it all. Dh and the kids think I'm ridiculous but I stay up every election night.

ViciousCurrentBun · 01/07/2024 22:00

Friend who is a retired political journalist coming round, he also writes political biographies. We worked together a few years ago as we both worked within a political sphere. Lots of snacks and shouting probably. DH has booked the next day off work, DS is also staying up to watch the results with us and also has the day off.

Invent · 01/07/2024 22:06

I have Friday off so I will be watching with wine with my DH.
We vote differently but I guess since we sort of know the result it will just be fun to watch rather than nail biting.

WiseUpJanetWeiss · 01/07/2024 22:31

It’s my birthday on Thursday. (Everyone keeps commiserating but I’m thrilled to be having an election for my birthday. For. My. Birthday. How exciting is that?)

So… there will already have been wine. I think I will be in bed with tea and iPad for the exit polls, then getting up when I inevitably and menopausally wake up about 4. I expect I will miss some exciting stuff but it will all still be fresh. I’m only working from home til about 1pm, so should be able to have a quick nap early afternoon before going away for the weekend.

tulippa · 01/07/2024 22:34

I booked Friday as leave as soon as I heard the election date. I plan to watch the exit polls/commentary with a couple of glasses of wine until about 12pm. Then nap until 3am after which I can hopefully watch Jeremy Hunt and others lose their seats. I don't usually like napping or messing with my sleep but figured it's history in the making so I should try to watch it. DH is planning an all-nighter.

Covgal83 · 01/07/2024 22:35

Going to try and get 4 hours after the exit polls. Get up again at 3...

tinytemper66 · 01/07/2024 22:35

To stay up until about midnight and then get up around half 5 to see the results. Working in the morning so unable to stay awake/uo.

Snap! 😀

MidnightMeltdown · 01/07/2024 23:53

I've only ever stayed up for 2 elections - and I was surprised by the results both times.

One was the Brexit referendum, and the other was when Trump was voted in. I didn't intend to stay up and watch at all, but somehow ended up glued to the screen - especially when Trump got in. I don't even live in America, or have any interest in their politics, but still, I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw them all voting for him!

Not planning to watch this one, but we'll see!

Carebearsonmybed · 02/07/2024 00:23

I'll stay up.

I imagine cheese & wine will be consumed.

OpizpuHeuvHiyo · 02/07/2024 00:26

I have made Bingo Cards that my family and I can cross off when each Tory loses their seat, so we can have a prize when someone gets a line.

If anyone on this thread wants a set (fresh random order for each set generated) let me know by PM

existentialannie · 02/07/2024 00:26

I’m more interested in the football

Elphame · 02/07/2024 00:32

Having friends round for drinks as usual. No TV or radio.

No doubt the internet will give me the results in the morning.

Turkeyhen · 02/07/2024 00:39

So excited for Thursday - there is nothing I like better than election night. Like others I'm planning to watch Channel 4 for the superior lineup, but normally I stick with BBC and it will be a wrench because John Curtice. No alcohol for me until the morning (hopefully celebratory).

fridaynight1 · 02/07/2024 00:57

I missed the last one because I was in a&e - I don't plan on having internal bleeding again so fingers crossed I'll be doing an all nighter. I love election night.

kfja · 02/07/2024 01:08

I’ll be sleeping as have a lot on the next day! I have stayed up late ish in the past but found it a bit boring as it’s only really a very small number of places that do a mega quick count.

iggleoggle · 02/07/2024 01:13

Pyjamas and duvet on the sofa from 10; channel 4 on, and dozing on and off all night long. If I get properly into bed it will be with radio 4 on in the background Have booked Friday off but DC has an assembly I need to go to at 9am. However, since changing job I am no longer allowed to spend the night (or the election campaign) making comments on my Twitter account (that is not completely snonymous) so my usual social media commentary will be curtailed. Although X loads so slowly for me now (wish I knew why) it’s probably not the end of the world

xxFairyNuffxx · 02/07/2024 01:47

Mostly ferrying DD to and from her prom and (earlier in the day) various associated appointments and collapsing in a heap.

WinterMorn · 02/07/2024 01:54

Planning a night in front of the TV with a big bowl of chilli, some beers and snacks. Annual leave booked for Friday 🙂
