General election 2024

Welsh Labour or Plaid?

Viscoelasticity · 29/06/2024 12:55

These are the two main parties in my constituency and I can’t decide which to vote for.
I don’t feel strongly about Welsh independence because I don’t realistically think it will happen.
I do feel strongly about public services, sustainability and the environment, and about Welsh interests being represented in Westminster.

Which of these two will you be voting for and why?

Also torn.
I feel like voting Plaid so that Labour don't take my vote for granted.
But Labour will win my seat.

What I really want is proportional representation.

Neither!

iwentjasonwaterfalls · 29/06/2024 13:10

Voting tactically. I'd rather vote Plaid, but Labour are more likely to win in our seat, so I'm voting Labour.

I've seen two different polls for my constituency - one says that Plaid is second to Labour, the other says that Reform is (huge anti-immigration sentiment locally in the last year that has been massively capitalized on by Reform and UKIP). I'm not taking any chances by voting Plaid, I'm just going to vote Labour and concentrate on Tories out above all else.

Viscoelasticity · 29/06/2024 13:50

No need for me to vote tactically on a local level as neither the Tories or Reform are a significant threat. I like the Plaid candidate because he’s local and understands issues affecting Wales. But I do want Labour to win an overall majority in Westminster. So perhaps the tactical vote is for them, to help them towards that overall majority?

Even though sounds like you’re in a safe Labour seat, better vote for them if you want them to win, or if everyone thinks the same way as you they might lose! I think that’s the biggest threat Labour face now, people assuming it’s in the bag, when it really isn’t.

Anyone else?

Are both candidates local? If I'm undecided I usually choose the one that lives locally.

MasterBeth · 29/06/2024 16:17

If public services, sustainability and the environment are your major concerns, vote Green. It's irresponsible to build a political platform on something as parochial as Welsh independence when the planet is burning.

The polls are all aggregated here if you want to see who is predicted to win your seat by all the different companies.

For anyone who doesn't speak Welsh:
Vote for the candidate you think will be best for the electorate
The more Welsh people in Westminster, the better

KnickerlessParsons · 29/06/2024 18:38

I thought Rhun ap Iorweth has come across very well every time I've heard him interviewed, and on the tv debate I watched. So PC for me 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

DaNiYmaOHyd · 29/06/2024 18:45

He has. He's made a good impression.

I'm so so torn myself. Welsh Labour have done no favours for the country, on devolved issues that they have had the power to impact they have done little more than line their pockets. So despite wanting the tories out on a uk wide basis, I have little trust in labour for us.
But if I vote plaid I'm throwing my vote at best and propping the reform candidate up at worst.

Sadik · 29/06/2024 19:40

I'm voting plaid as it's between them & the lib Dems in ceredigion, plus I think Ben lake is a decent constituency MP. At a UK level, my expectation is that plaid MPs will generally tend to vote with Labour on issues I care about. I'm also happy to see their stated support for LGBT rights.
For the Senedd I'm a swing voter between Labour & Plaid & often split my votes. Although I'm broadly happy with the Welsh Labour govt I think there's a danger in them being too dominant.

DaNiYmaOHyd · 29/06/2024 20:01

@MasterBeth , because your MP is your representative in Parliament. I feel it is better to have someone who knows the constituency and the concerns of the constituents.

Voting tactically is OK if it's a very close contest, but if you are in a so-called safe seat there's a chance it might not work.

LilianaVikavanovich · 29/06/2024 20:08

Luckily we have the Women’s Equality Party here , so I voted for her
I really can’t vote Labour , because they’ve made such a mess of Wales, and I’m not voting Plaid as I think they’re a bunch of mysoginists

Remember the constituency boundary has changed this year, conservative / labour may get more votes than they used to when it was just Ceredigion?

So that Welsh perspectives and interests are well represented of course!

I have voted Labour (postal vote) purely as a tactical vote because the Tories come second in my constituency and my main priority is keeping them out of government. However I agree with a lot of Plaid policies (on asylum seekers and Europe, and the whole HS2 debacle stinks and Plaid are the only ones shouting about it) and I don’t like the current goings on in the Senedd with Labour. If I thought Plaid had any chance of winning here I would have voted for them, and as we have PR for Senedd elections I have done for those in the past. I do agree we need more Welsh voices in Westminster but I want the Tories out more!

Drakeford was such an awful man I thought Gething would be an improvement. Got that wrong. Plaid yep misogyny is rife. Tory ours has been invisible.

I'm not minded to vote at all. I've got all the flyers so will do some research before I decide.

Please turn up to vote and spoil your ballot, if you really don’t want any of the candidates.

FWIW I like Drakeford. I think he is a man of integrity 🙂
