People who *always* vote for the same party.

If you always vote for the same party - regardless of policies, people or track record - then how hard do you think that party will work to get your vote ?

Remember, these are people who always vote for the same party - you sometimes see them pop up in vox pops. Their vote isn't conditional on the party they vote for doing anything apart from just existing,

How's that working our for you ?

I’ve been waiting 14 years to find out. Guess I’ll know soon.

HildasLostSock · 20/06/2024 17:28

I'm not sure that's a consideration. I asked my dad who he was going to vote for, he said that he always votes for the same party so its just a tick box exercise for him. I asked him what he liked about their policies, he couldn't tell me. I think maybe he just decided x years ago that y party was for him and hasn't thought about it since.

Easipeelerie · 20/06/2024 17:40

I always vote for the same party. It’s a party that aligns with my values, beliefs and morals.
In the same way the OP finds that odd, I find it odd that some people switch from voting for one party to another.

But parties change hugely! Look at Starmer's LP compared with Corbyn's LP! Completely different.

Gladanotthwrteamonesomething · 20/06/2024 19:44

There was a person on TV bemoaning what was wrong with the country and government yet will still vote for them. That's very strange. Don't expect any better then.

Policy is important to me. Not fancy slogans, newspaper bias but what balances with the way I would like the country to go.

Bobbybobbins · 20/06/2024 19:48

I look at the policies. Generally one of two parties aligns more. I am less bothered about who the personnel are, so to speak.

Tbh it surprises me when people say they switch Tory/Labour as there never seems to be much common ground. But I suppose then it is more that people's priorities/lives change.

TheShellBeach · 20/06/2024 19:52

I've changed party allegiance three times in my life.

I've usually voted Labour, but twice voted SNP (never again over the GRR debacle).

A hundred years ago, when I was 18, I voted Liberal.

If there was an ALBA candidate in my area now, I'd vote for them. But there isn't, so it'll be Labour.

Berga · 20/06/2024 19:56

I would never vote Tory. Other than that, I'm persuadable by policy, but have only ever voted Labour.

IWantToBeASleepingCat · 20/06/2024 19:58

Most of my friends always vote for * ** because their parents did and their grandparents etc etc.
That's the only answer they can give me.

That’s true. I’m more comfortable with where we are now. But there wasn’t a more centre left alternative and there was no way I was giving a vote to the Tories.

If the Tories are clever they’ll actually jettison the Reform crowd and form a centre right party. But they won’t.

Latenightreader · 20/06/2024 20:06

I'm a party member and have always voted for them, apart from one election when the candidate (sitting MP) had done something which meant I couldn't bring myself to support them. I've had to think hard in the past, but so far have stuck to my membership. We do have an excellent local team which helps!

mealideas2024 · 20/06/2024 20:11

I've switched and swapped a few times depending on my own/my families current situation but also anything at the time which is a current issue (ie Brexit) and the different parties stances on that.

Equally depends on who the local MP was too. I was very closely aligned with Labour in the 2015 election, but there was absolutely no way I could vote for the guy who was standing in my constituency for Labour thus I voted differently.

I do find it unusual how many people I know who were fervently in favour of Corbyn's Labour for instance, and are now fervently in favour of Starmer's Labour. I find them very very different parties with very different policies so it seems strange to me that you'd be so closely aligned even though some polices are the polar opposite to what you supported in the past. Same can be said for Johnson's conservatives and Sunak's conservatives.

Including many Labour politicians and Starmer himself...

I had this debate the other day, and if the group is large enough then it may not be in the best interests of the country

I’m the same. This time round I’m really liking the Greens’ policies but their economics are from fairyland and even if they weren’t it’s more important to me to get shot of the Tories.

Manifestos may change and leaders may pull a party in a certain direction but aren't their fundamental principles the same?

anonhop · 21/06/2024 08:32

I guess if you're someone who only wants to vote for the main 2 because you think otherwise it's a wasted vote, then it makes sense for it always to be the same one.

I've always voted for the same party & probably always will, unless there was major change. I have my political ideals and although the parties change under different leadership, go further toward/away from centre, it's always likely to be this one that shares my ultimate goals for the country

No I don't really think so. Not in this case anyway.

Interesting. How have the fundamental principles of the Labour party changed? I would have thought Blair created a seismic shift rather than Starmer.

RampantIvy · 21/06/2024 16:45

There is one party I will never vote for.

I don’t think the fundamental principles have changed and Starmer is very much to the right. His government won’t be nearly radical enough for me but it will have to do.

They're actively deselecting socialist MPs (did it in my constituency), and expelling other members who speak out on eg Gaza. Starmer just says whatever he thinks will get most approval.

No principles left that I can see.

pocketheart · 21/06/2024 18:13

52 and have always voted for the same party, always will.
My adult dc who undoubtedly have been heavily influenced by me, also are one party people for life.

Hothotdamage · 21/06/2024 18:14

No matter what ?
