To not feel the need to vote in the general election

I can’t see the point in voting for any of the parties as I think they are all as bad as each other.
They historically change goal posts to suit themselves, pilfer public funds and get away with it, break the rules that Joe Public has to follow and I feel politics just stinks.

However, I don’t want the conservatives to get back in but dread to think what the alternative will be.

I’m in Scotland and we’re stuck with the SNP for years.
I’m at a loss how to vote tactfully to rid the uk of Conservatives and feel that on election day it will be a case of not voting at all or “ which numpty should I vote for?’

I can't recall Labour pilfering public funds and breaking the law while in office, but even so, if you don't want the conservatives in government I don't get why you wouldn't vote?
FPTP is a terrible system and I've lived in safe Tory seats most of my life but I still vote (tactically) for the chance to get them out because I fundamentally disagree with their policies.
the problem comes if lots of people don't vote because they can't be bothered.

BarHumbugs · 16/06/2024 11:33

YABVU to think they are all as bad as each other, no other party has been as appallingly self serving and corrupt as the current Tory government and I don't understand why people are pretending they believe otherwise.

SnapdragonToadflax · 16/06/2024 11:37

They are not all as bad as each other, so yes, you're being unreasonable. The recent Tory government have been an absolute shambles, corrupt and uncaring. Reform is a business led by a racist.

If you want the Tories out vote for someone else. Find out who the second most popular party is in your area and vote for them.

caramac04 · 16/06/2024 12:22

I think everyone should vote. If you don’t like any of the parties then spoil your vote.
If no one votes then we’re not a democracy.
People fought hard for working men and all women to vote. Let’s not lose that right. Thinks look bad now but they would be worse if we give up our right.

Im not sure tactical voting will work where i live

Everyone should vote.
Women died so we could vote
People who don't vote have no right to complain about the Government.
Spoil your ballot paper, if necessary - at least you are expressing your opinion.
I have had to arrange a postal vote, as I'll be away. My constituency is the opposite of a marginal seat, and my vote is wasted because I would never choose to vote for the dominant party. But I still vote - it's my civic duty.

ThinWomansBrain · 16/06/2024 12:41

Unless you live in a marginal constituency your vote means nothing - although the definition of marginal may need reappraising.

I live in a constituency where the sitting MP (who represents the party I am a member of) has a 70% majority.
I always turn up and spoil my ballot paper by writing that I want a democratic electoral system across it.

haddockfortea · 16/06/2024 12:45

If you genuinely can't stand any of them, then look at which one you loathe the most and vote tactically.

You're stuck with the SNP in the Scottish Parliament for a couple of years but a fair amount of the decisions that affect you will still be made in Westminster.

If you currently have a Tory MP then obviously get out and vote tactically for someone else, since you feel strongly about getting rid of them. If you have an MP of a different party then look down your list of candidates and see who you'd like to be representing you. There are a lot of politicians who are in it for the right reasons, who serve their constituents well and attempt to change things for the better.

FranticHare · 16/06/2024 12:48

It should be illegal not to vote. It is so so important everyone has their say.

Peopl say their vote won’t make a difference - in some places 75% don’t vote for this reason. If they all voted the outcomes would be so different!

Crabpot · 16/06/2024 13:29

For the first time in my adult life, I won’t be voting at the 2024 GE. I voted Tory since I was 18 and I’m now in my 50’s. I’m utterly disgusted with the way the Tory’s have behaved over the last few years, but equally, I remember exactly why the last Labour Government were voted out in 2010 and of course I remember the famous Treasury note declaring there was no money left.

As for spoiling my ballot at the polling station as a matter of protest, I honestly believe it’s futile. The candidates all see the spoilt ballots, agree they’re spoilt and move on, they’re only interested in the ballots they’ve won individually, not some scribbled on defaced piece of paper that then ends up in the shredder. Of course if I were to genuinely believe that spoiling my vote actually had any real effect, then I’d do it.

So for me, sadly, I’m just not bothering to vote because I genuinely don’t believe a single utterance of what any of the standing parties are touting in order to get themselves into power.

I of course will not complain about the outcome of whichever party ‘wins’ as I will have given up that right to complain if it all goes pear shaped. At the end of the day, I can no longer vote for candidates I have no belief in, civic duty or otherwise.

Lovetotravel123 · 16/06/2024 13:31

I suppose my feeling is that anyone who doesn’t vote doesn’t have a right to complain about the future situation. I know people who didn’t vote in the referendum and now complain that Brexit happened. I can see why no party looks appealing though.

People died for our right to vote, the secret ballot etc. It is immoral not to vote, in my opinion. It is an enormous privilege that many in the world would like.

And people continue to die across the world for the right to a democratic vote.
What happens if everyone decides they can’t be arsed because they don’t really like the people they are voting for? We’re so complacent in this country, we just all seem to think we can sit back and someone else will fix it for us. Nothing will change unless we all do our little bit to change it.

CelesteCunningham · 16/06/2024 13:46

How old are you? If you can remember life more than 14 years ago you can surely see that they aren't in fact all as bad as each other.

Vote for the least worst option, sometimes that's all we can do.

KatyaKabanova · 16/06/2024 13:46

The parties are very different. It's ignorant to claim that they're not. If you can't be bothered to read the details, there are summaries on the BBC website. If you don't vote, others make the decisions for you.
FPTP system essentially keeps the extremists out. If votes were in proportion to the current polls, then Reform would get a lot more seats than they actually will do.
Proportional systems in Europe have allowed the far right to do well.
In every constituency, there will be a candidate to vote for.

SilverBranchGoldenPears · 16/06/2024 13:49

Apparently my tactical vote would be SNP. I cannot (in good conscience ) and will not vote SNP. It’s really hard for Scots right now to vote tactically against the tories as for so many the SNP is just as bad (and they have systematically denuded Scottish education, health and public services). I cannot vote. I won’t vote. And yes I am well aware of the moral and ethical conundrum which this is. I’m highly educated and would say I know as much about politics as anyone out there barring professors of politics. Nevertheless I stand by my right to NOT vote as an educated choice.

atticstage · 16/06/2024 13:51

The Tories were the only party boozing it up together whilst forcing ordinary people to die alone.

Voting against the disgusting creatures who did that to people is always worthwhile.

Thank you, this is the nearest to how I feel.

Sad that it’s come to this isn’t it?
On the day, I probably will leave the house to vote or spoil my paper, in honour of the suffragettes and nothing more.

This is precisely why I think they are as bad as each other, because I can remember further back than 14 years.

Stompythedinosaur · 16/06/2024 14:20

I think spoiling your ballot is perfectly reasonable, it still makes a statement, but not voting is bad, and feels like a betrayal of the women who fought for the vote.

KatyaKabanova · 16/06/2024 14:25

Spoiling your ballot doesn't make any point and just creates work. Just stay at home.

TinklySnail · 16/06/2024 14:28

You don’t have to vote as the conservatives won’t win anyway.
I don’t see the point of turning up to not actually vote for a party. But, each to their own. You have a choice and you are entitled to choose to vote or not.
