Labour and Pensioners

So Labour has declared they will not increase taxes and NI on working people, but they need to raise money for their manifesto promises such as free breakfast clubs, more teachers, dentists etc. To help pay for it all would it be a good idea if they remove the triple lock on state pensions and make pensioners pay NI?

The well heeled couple probably in their 60s was expensively dressed and groomed. Being able to arrived in a black cab indicates a healthy level of disposable income, they literally waltzed into the foyer so not needing a taxi due to disabilities.

Literally waltzed? That must have been entertaining.

So if Andrew O’Neil is wrong in this how do you think Labour will raise money to fund their spending pledges?

Do you mean Andrew Neil? Or his "expert"? I assume they weren't imagining Labour are planning to make pensioners pay NI, so that is just divisive scaremongering on your part based on your visit to an art gallery and dislike of old people.
It's probably fair to say that some of Labour's ambitions are predicated on economic growth, and so were Liz Truss's but there the similarity ends so it's a fairly tenuous connection in my view.

Fucking well dressed old people, with their ballroom dancing skills.

Was it a Viennesse waltz, a Cajun waltz, a slow waltz? So many questions!

Tbh I don’t think this poster should be taken seriously. If you can’t get someone’s name right you are either purposely disrespectful to that person or a troll.

flyingvisit · 14/06/2024 09:08

What I want to know is:

WHO PAID FOR THE BALLROOM DANCING LESSONS?

They aren't great at detail on the substantive issues are they?

bombastix · 14/06/2024 09:14

It’s an old technique to mangle someone’s name to annoy them and it also works on the internet. The posters who consistently do it are disengenuous imo as to ther motives, matter where they are on the political spectrum.

bombastix · 14/06/2024 09:14

No matter…

I recently went to an art exhibition and was rightly charged the full adult fee but I did notice a well dressed affluent looking couple in front of me who had arrived in a black cab and claim the reduced pensioner fee. I do feel due to rising house prices and final salary pensions there are a sizeable number of pensioners who are a lot better than working people, maybe those over the threshold should pay NI especially as they are the largest users of the NHS

Wow, you do realise that people can't help getting old and having to deal with the health problems that brings and you think they should be penalised for that?

Why not make fat people pay more NI as we all know being overweight causes health problems, or people who smoke, drink etc.

Churchview · 14/06/2024 09:43

The couple at the gallery were DH and I. Don't we scrub up well.
We literally take the cab and waltz everywhere now. It's our only option since our local bus service was withdrawn during the austerity years.

Hey OP - you should go to the National Gallery instead. Thanks to the last Labour government It's free for everyone regardless of age, wealth, dancing ability or level of grooming.

unsync · 14/06/2024 09:44

I think we should make people who lack critical thinking skills pay extra NI, extrapolating from the numbers on here, you'd raise an absolute fortune.

How would you measure that?

BIossomtoes · 14/06/2024 09:48

You could start with people who think observations at art galleries are a sensible basis for fiscal policy reform.

Houseofdragonsisback · 14/06/2024 09:50

Confused my threads!

It would be a better idea to raise capital gains tax and other taxes based on wealth rather than income. Taking money away from a relatively low income group really isn’t a good look.

Pensioners on average actually have higher incomes than workers now.

amazing but true!

BIossomtoes · 14/06/2024 09:54

So amazing that I’d like to see the stats behind it.

Houseofdragonsisback · 14/06/2024 10:04

we do need to raise money for better services and we have an ageing population so the issue will get worse.

There is too much tax on income vs wealth.

Churchview · 14/06/2024 10:06

"a sizeable number of current pensioners are relatively well off with a healthy amount of disposable income due to house price increases."

Equity in your home isn't disposable income.

Houseofdragonsisback · 14/06/2024 10:07

We all have to pay more for a better health service

Why not make fat people pay more NI as we all know being overweight causes health problems, or people who smoke, drink etc.

You know there are older people who are fat, smoke, drink etc & there are taxes on cigarettes etc.

Houseofdragonsisback · 14/06/2024 10:08

Equity in your home isn't disposable income.

Not unless you access it eg equity release, downsizing. My inlaws house was 60k in the 80s & is now 1.7m. Lots of people would be happy to have that equity because it does give you options.

Houseofdragonsisback · 14/06/2024 10:09

I thought it was disposable income?

Why is it ok for pensioners to pay less tax than working age people on the same income? Pensioners are actually the wealthiest demographic.

Regardless older people should not be paying less tax. The current generation of pensioners paid less in and are taking more out. Ni is just another tax - no reason it shouldn’t be levied on everyone equally.
