Boris Johnson's Daily Mail column and an offensive term about Keir Starmer

LlynTegid · 08/06/2024 14:30

Mr Johnson refers to him as Keir Schnorrer. The word schnorrer is a Yiddish word/insult for beggar or scrounger. Mrs Starmer is Jewish.

If any of you meet any Conservative candidates or there are any who do online questions, let them know about this slur and ask whether they think this man is fit to remain in the Conservative party.

I have complained to IPSO.

And here...

Disgusting. I've also submitted a complaint to IPSO.

pointythings · 08/06/2024 16:57

This is going to backfire spectacularly on the Conservatives, and I'm going to post that image on every thread where people go on about how only one party has an issue with antisemitism.

Which clause of the Editors’ Code did you use? I’m struggling to see where this pile of excrement fits.

Please do.

MrTiddlesTheCat · 08/06/2024 17:05

No point complaining to IPSO. I did over othet shite the Mail printed and they refused to even look into my complaint as I wasn't the target of their shite. According to them you can't complain on behalf of others, even if you also find it really offensive.

SuziQuinto · 08/06/2024 17:06

Really? Who do we complain to?
Isn't there a body which monitors antisemitism?.

Westfacing · 08/06/2024 17:07

CloudyAgain · 08/06/2024 15:17

It's a major misjudgement by the Daily Mail to publish this.

It's not a misjudgement by the Daily Mail, nor Johnson - they know exactly what they're doing.

Teado · 08/06/2024 17:12

A disgrace. So depressing.

SuziQuinto · 08/06/2024 17:14

I've just been online, there's an organisation called CST you can email but I'm not sure if they only deal with urgent incidents?

dontcallmelen · 08/06/2024 17:14

Made a complaint also
agree it’s very depressing

I also made a complaint once when the papers published a picture of a dying celebrity. They said that because I was not family I was not affected and the complaint therefore was not valid. It was pathetic.

I am Jewish and I was really shocked by this, DH is not Jewish and he can't see the issue at all, even after I explained it to him.

To echo what someone upthread said- listen to what Jewish people say when they say it is offensive.

SuziQuinto · 08/06/2024 17:28

That was me, @NovemberAutumn and I really mean it.
We have to listen to Jewish people, also not just leave it to them to fight antisemitism because it's our responsibility too.
I have been horrified by the increase I have witnessed. We need to act.

bombastix · 08/06/2024 17:31

Tbh this is horrible, but presumably Johnson may be doing this to raise his own profile where the Conservative leadership is dodgy, Nigel Farage is currently doing the end of the pier act better than him. Johnson doesn’t have scruple and really dislikes Starmer so the only way to get back in the picture is this kind of calculated attack. It’s an effort so that people see his credentials in his mind, and therefore justified.

I struggled between discrimination and accuracy and wasn't sure. I settled for discrimination since everyone knows that Johnson is a liar and the Daily Mail doesn't care.

dontcallmelen · 08/06/2024 17:48

I ticked discrimination as well.

CitrineRaindropPhoenix · 08/06/2024 18:02

Im going to complain. My 80 year old mum has just phoned to ask me what a gimp and a ball gag are. Thanks for that DM.

Somewhat bizarrely, it's 'German word of the day' here in The Local in 2019;

Learning German
German word of the day: Der Schnorrer

One would translate this unflattering colloquial term as “a sponger” or “a scrounger” in English.

Although it’s probably inadvisable to directly call someone a Schnorrer, the verb form - schnorren - is often used light heartedly, for example when asking someone politely for something small.

But this is not the case here in the UK, is it? Or are you trying to tell us that your beloved Boris went to all the effort of looking up an obscure yiddish word which also has a meaning in German, and then used it in his article expecting the Daily Mail readership to immediately understand that he wasn't being antisemitic at all, he was just referencing this German word?

Nah. Mind you, I'm not surprised to find you defending him again. That man could eat a newborn baby alive in St Paul's cathedral and livestream it, and you'd find an excuse for him.

It's not a word I would use certainly. It can't be that obscure though - a poster used it on Mumsnet six months ago.

Notonthestairs · 08/06/2024 18:53

Aside from the antisemitism, fancy being called a scrounger by freebie-holidays/wallpaper/food Johnson.

noblegiraffe · 08/06/2024 18:54

Johnson wrote those Islamphobic bits about women in burkas looking like bank robbers and letter boxes and homophobic bits about bumboys in tank tops so it's pretty obvious this was intentionally offensive.

It's probably the only way he can get anyone to even look at his column. The Mail must be incredibly pissed off they paid him so much for the dross he is knocking out.

And how many words have been used on Mumsnet since? Confused There are a lot of very educated people on Mumsnet, you know.
