General election 2024

I was a Tory - Has Rishi Sunak lost the plot re National Service?

DistinguishedSocialCommentator · 26/05/2024 10:01

I was a Tory since starting work
My parents were initially Labour but as they built their wealth they too became Tories

I am fed up with the BS all political parties spout quiet often

We now have the date of the GE

This ill-though out, pie-in-the-sky proposal re National Service

AIBU to feel Sunak is a closet socialist/Labour man??

(The bit about the alternative to NS, ie volunteer weekend work is meaningless to many)

Tories had a decent chance of winning the GE - this Nastional Service BS, will stop many Tories voting Tory for sure.

Surely nobody with a child or grandchild is likely to vote for this even if they agree with other policies. Who would trust any politician not to move the goalposts further down the line so that more like traditional conscription. Also what if my 8 year old does choose military option when he otherwise wouldn't have.

Jiski · 26/05/2024 10:42

I don’t know why you’d ever vote Tory but putting that aside this is a standard conservative type policy. It is isn’t a socialist/labour policy at all.

It’s also ridiculous and I don’t with agree with it for a number of reasons.

Also you must be deluded if you think they have a chance of winning. They’re 20 points behind in the polls and have had the worst 5 years than any party ever.

ASighMadeOfStone · 26/05/2024 10:43

Please dear lord, can we stop starting threads about this.

There are now 17 started since last night.

It won't happen (see the reasons why on the other threads)

AColdClearDrink · 26/05/2024 10:45

It’s like they’re trying to throw the election to deliberately lose for some reason.

ilovesooty · 26/05/2024 10:53

Tories had a decent chance of winning the GE

🤣🤣🤣

Tospyornottospy · 26/05/2024 10:53

Could this not have been attached to the thread already running on this?

Oh I expect the OP wanted their own thread... 🙄

Oh I expect the OP wanted their own thread... 🙄

Sure but it’s not necessary, the amount of threads on the same bloody topic and the need to be on the GE board

IClaudine · 26/05/2024 11:08

MNHQ will move threads to the GE board if you ask. I have asked them to move this one.

MrsSkylerWhite · 26/05/2024 11:11

“Tories had a decent chance of winning the GE”

If this is real, what planet have you been living on?

Edited

Please read my OP again bud. I clearly stated they had a chance of a win but not with Mr Sunak doing a sterling job of upsetting/worrying millions of parents and grand kid re this pathetic proposal - I'm not sure which clown came up with the idea but they must be a a closet Labour fan

I’m not sure that’s true. Plenty of grandparents voted for Brexit despite their grandchildren and children not wanting them to.

DistinguishedSocialCommentator · 26/05/2024 13:05

Listening to the radio a few minutes ago - a caller from NI stated that half of the population will NOT want anything to do with "British armed forces" - he has a point

Another caller a teenager, if mem serves me well, teenager aged 17 was dead against the alternatives to military service ie volunteer work, one a month on a weekend - called sited "why should I give up my time when I may have homework, work or just want to rest.""

The more I think about this story - I had to check the dates and see if it was April 1st

@ASighMadeOfStone

the weird thing is the OP has posted on the other threads, but is fond of starting her own anyway

its tedious. MN Is going to need to get firm about these threads or the next 6 weeks is going to be unbearable.

i love a good political thread, but its just mayhem when
loads are started about each aspect.

Theunamedcat · 26/05/2024 13:28

You dont think this is an election head turner? How many times have you heard people say the young have zero respect bring back national service that will sort them out

To answer questions

A lot I've heard it a lot
Yes I have teenage boy who will be caught up with this policy
No I don't say I'm agreeing with him

ASighMadeOfStone · 26/05/2024 13:30

You mean the 879 threads 😂

Why do you think he would be caught up in it? Doesn't he intend to work or go to university?

Read your own OP. You "clearly stated" that they had a decent chance of winning.

He has sen working will be tricky university will most likely be out-of reach and before you go on about accommodations for adhd/autistic people please remember we have had over ten years of tory cuts he doesn't have an official diagnosis he has been on the list somewhere for over eight years he will age out of the system most likely alone 18 and unsupported I do my best but its an uphill battle here I've had to contact pals AGAIN because referral that was promised in January 2022 which was re promised in September 2023 has not been done in May 2024 he was supposed to have a review February/March 2024 that also hasn't happened and I've been busy with his severely disabled brother not having a school place allocated for September (he is starting year 7) and I missed it until I looked at my calendar

Welcome to the shite show

A closet socialist ! Lol.
His family business made £150 million profit last year.
He's a Tory git down to his bone marrow.

So Labour are responsible for a Tory policy?

BonifaceBonanza · 26/05/2024 16:37

Did no one who posts actually read Sunaks proposal??!!

The so called compulsory service amounts to one weekend a month volunteering (with plenty of exceptions/exclusions) 🙄 big whoopeedoo

Welcome to the shite show

Find any post where I have ever, in 21 years of posting on Mumsnet "gone on" about people with SEN.

I did call out a goady cunt this morning who was saying that these days every parent is getting their children labelled as having SEN for the "extra money". Maybe you were confusing me with her?

Back on topic: then your son wouldn't have to do the national service. Obviously.
