General election 2024

To think that it is difficult not to question the judgement of people who say I could never vote 'x'. (Replace 'x' with any political affiliation)

Unless I have missed something, the main parties have all shown themselves to have questionable integrity and morals.

It was a hypothetical question FFS. I really should not have to explain this should I. 😂

It’s a really, really daft question though.

If someone is fundamentally opposed to the basic ideology of the Conservative Party, then the Conservative Party putting out that persons “dream manifesto” would amount to the Conservative Party doing a complete u-turn on their core beliefs (yet still wanting to nominally be the “Conservative Party” for some reason).

Being fundamentally opposed to certain ideologies, such that you’d never support them, is not tribalism. It’s just acting in accordance with your principles.

The day the Tories take up an anarcho-mutualist manifesto position will be the day I vote for them. That is effectively “never”.

Yes, exactly.

"But what if the Tories came out with your dream manifesto? Would you STILL refuse to vote for them? If so, it's silly tribalism"

Well I might. But I would be very sceptical. And it wouldn't happen anyway because then they wouldn't be Tories any more.

SofaThrow · 25/05/2024 19:14

I give up. 😂

Thank goodness, I can only cringe so much 😂

As a disabled person I could never vote Tory, my judgement isn't compromised, their record speaks for itself!

Full disclosure, I'm a member of the Labour party and have been for years.

I'd never say never. I've been interested in politics for over 50 years. I recall a time when, in France the last two candidates standing were the French equivalent of our Tory party and LePen (the father, not the daughter). If I'd have had to vote then I'd have held my nose and voted their equivalent of Tory.

years spent as a manager and leader of a team taught me that sometimes you are in a position where you have to choose the least worse option.

Yes I thought the same, the most realistic hypothetical scenario where I might vote Tory is if the only plausible options were them or a far right party - but that scenario is so far removed from the present day (or anything in modern British history) that it’s not one I’m seriously entertaining, just yet.
