General election 2024

Voting Conservative or Labour?

StrawPollTime · 22/05/2024 21:16

So we actually have a date for the General Election!

If you're planning to vote Conservative or planning to vote Labour... then which? Please click to indicate:

YABU = I'm planning to vote Conservative

YANBU = I'm planning to vote Labour

(Sorry, I do know that other parties are available and other voting choices are possible. Obviously lots of people won't be voting either Conservative or Labour. But AIBU only has a 2-way voting option, and I wanted to get a quick snapshot of support for the 2 biggest parties. So this is a poll for people who are planning to vote for one of those two.)

I can't say I would vote for either party.

I will be voting for whichever party is standing in my constituency that agree with me on more of the big issues.
It is going to be a case of "the least bad" though, going on the last few elections.

Tryingtokeepgoing · 22/05/2024 22:10

I’ll be voting tactically. What we really need is a coalition government to force some real debate. I don’t trust either of the main parties to govern alone.

1dayatatime · 22/05/2024 22:54

The one often used comment that always amuses me at every election time is :

"I'm going to vote for XYZ party because they can't be any worse than than the useless bunch of idiots we currently have in Government"

Only to be repeated at the next election.

CranfordScones · 22/05/2024 22:56

None of the above - and I support having that as an option on ballot papers.

Can I remind people of some of the other choices, according to the Electoral Commission's register of political parties.

There's the Womens Party, also the Party for Women (splitters!) and a Women's Equality Party. There's also a Matriarchal Party. And on this very wet day, there's a National Flood Prevention Party.

There's also one called the Consensus Party - I don't agree with anything they say. For fans of Pulp, there's one called The Common People. There's an Entertainment Party, a Motoring Party, a Rubbish Party and a Sensible Party.

Not sure how many of these will be putting up candidates, but no vote is ever wasted in my opinion.

blue345 · 22/05/2024 23:08

For the first time, I'm not voting Conservative. I'm going to vote reform, not because they'll get seats (my area is staunchly Conservativej but it sends a message for change.

It’s very left wing on here, I’m not sure you will get a snap shot, it really needs to be an official poll. There will be many.

I don’t think it is particularly left wing on here.

The results of the poll on this thread are perfectly in line with national polling.

FiveGuyPastry · 22/05/2024 23:23

Labour.

If you don’t like any of the options, vote for the least worst.

It shouldn’t be that way but it is. If you’re waiting for the perfect political party to turn up, you’ll be waiting a long time.

SilverSimca · 22/05/2024 23:26

Can't you do a poll where you can actually name the parties? You can in some topics ,I know you can have people vote on multiple names on the Baby Names topics.

Jonismorf · 22/05/2024 23:29

I won't bother voting. It won't matter who wins, nothing will change for the little people. Something will go up a few quid, something else will come down a few pence. Either way, it'll cost us.

I want to vote for the Rubbish Party!

My area doesn't tend to get many smaller parties or independents unfortunately. I'd like to see more Independents in Parliament.

I live in a red wall area that went blue last time. Never thought I would see it. Current MP is excellent and has done so much more than the previous Labour MP ever did. I have a predicament.

@AngelicInnocent Sometimes worth considering who to vote for based on your constituency candidates rather than the party. My mum told me that when I first voted.

As it's almost certain Labour will win the election, even if you vote for your Tory MP and they winit's highly unlikely to change who's in government but it could let you get keep a good constituency MP.

Same goes for you @NDmumoftwo . It's almost a dead cert Labour will win the election with the most seats, so in your case of Hobson's Choice it might be worth looking at local constituency issues and deciding which candidate is better on that.

I'm planning to look at local constituency issues myself as don't know how I'll vote yet.

Alexander Stafford by any chance?!

GrumpyOldCrone · 23/05/2024 00:27

We urgently need a change of government. The present government is out of ideas. I’m not really in favour of either Labour or the Conservatives, but we simply can’t carry on with the current administration.

RubyWinehouse · 23/05/2024 00:28

Reform

DonnaBanana · 23/05/2024 00:32

I’m reluctantly voting conservative. Taxes are the most important thing for me and while the Tories have kept putting them up and up lately except national insurance they are the only ones who might reduce them one day.

The first one doesn't seem to have existed since 1917. I can't find any online reference to the second. The third party bullied out its spokeswoman on violence against women (oh the irony) because she spoke out in favour of safeguarding children. The fourth hasn't stood a candidate since 2010 but that woman stood as an independent candidate in 2019. No idea about her views.

Wouldn't vote Tory in a million years. They've always been a bunch of self-serving arseholes who care for no one but their own bank balance but the current government are truly the lowest of the low and have done their best to wreck our country. I will be voting Labour.

This.

MissyB1 · 22/05/2024 21:33

In our town it's a case of tactical voting. To get the Tory MP out we have to vote Lib Dem. Labour shouldn't even field a candidate really.

Same here

rwalker · 23/05/2024 05:13

Couldn’t vote labour if my life depended on it all we’ll have is years of
Ohh not our fault blame the lot before ( which to be fair EVERY party does )

also Kier blames nothing more than Tory funding for NHS problems not denying funding is and issues but all my NHS colleagues say waste, inefficient systems and processes, poor management and fraud are far bigger contributors to the NHS problems than funding
his wife works for NHS he’s should know this better than anyone but instead he just uses funding to bitch an the opposition

NDmumoftwo · 22/05/2024 21:41

I can't vote labour with two children in private school. Genuinely don't know what to do, as I loathe the tories

With two children in private school you are a Tory even if you don’t want to admit it.

The last coalition government didn't force any real debate and was a disaster for the Lib Dems

Churchview · 22/05/2024 21:42

For the first time in a long time I am living in an area where the tactical vote to get the Tory out is Labour.

I remember how much better the country was under Labour and will vote for them. Not perfect in every way, but definitely better in general for ordinary people, the environment, education and health.

They've committed to stick to the Tories' spending plans, so the chance of change is slim.

Plus Wes Streeting's idea to sort the NHS is to get the staff working overtime. This isn't Blair's Labour. They can't achieve what he did.

As for me: indie, Party of Women or spoiling my vote.

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 23/05/2024 05:46

I'll be voting Labour. I'm not expecting miracles, given the shocking state the country is in now, it'll be an uphill battle to start to pull it back. But at least the Tories can't then do any more damage or waste more money.

Windypants21 · 23/05/2024 06:02

If you want a Party vote conservative...they had alot of them during covid.

Wherly · 23/05/2024 06:06

Spoiling my ballot but it's a chicken shit move really as I am only doing it because I live in a very safe Labour seat.
