But I don't know who they are.

I know my grandparents. I have one auntie. No nieces or nephews.

Is the only alternative a half sibling?

OP posts:
LIZS · 22/01/2025 12:33

Cousin?

Oreyt · 22/01/2025 12:38

I thought cousin was 22%?

I only have 2 cousins as I only have one aunt.

It's a bit unsettling 😬😬

OP posts:

That percentage would indicate grandparent/child, aunt/uncle, niece/nephew or half sibling.

I found my half sibling on ancestry, albeit it wasn’t a shock as I knew they existed somewhere out there.

Oreyt · 22/01/2025 12:43

So the answer is yes that is the only alternative?

Or one of your parents has a half sibling so there is an aunt/uncle you don’t know about?

Or one of your grandparents isn’t actually your bio grandparent?

RareFinch · 22/01/2025 12:46

My advice in happy settled families would be to step away from ancestry sites.

Oreyt · 22/01/2025 12:46

Fuck. Didn't expect this.
My dad died 13 years ago.

I sent the DNA off for my mum incase any matches came up for her as she didn't know her grandad.

This person didn't come up on my mums.

I've just had the results for myself.

So either my dad's son or his brother?

That's a bit weird for the forum you are on?

You popped up on the main page. Some DC are the product of rape. Some DC were forcibly adopted. People have affairs and everyone ivolved in the marriage are aware. It really could ruin family relationships for you.

I guess or a biological grandad but probably more likely your dad had a half brother or another child.

JandamiHash · 22/01/2025 12:50

I’ve known a few people have their lives turned upside down because of ancestry. It’s why I never want to do one myself as I a reckon my dad was a bit of a slag in his youth and didn’t marry mum til he was nearly 30.

How old is he OP?

JandamiHash · 22/01/2025 12:51

Find a Facebook site for ancestry groups OP. My friend did her family tree and the sites were helpful as so many people can translate the information

Oreyt · 22/01/2025 12:51

@JandamiHash He died age 59

These service providers and some charities provide information and guidance. These will be better information sources than MN.

I think they mean how old is the DNA match but Ancestry don’t tell you unless the person has created a profile.

Oreyt · 22/01/2025 12:54

They don't have a tree on ancestry so to me they aren't bothered about the research just the dna aspect ?

OP posts:
Oreyt · 22/01/2025 12:56

@BananaSpanner

Cross posted. Yes no tree no info.

You can send them a message and find out a bit more about them if they reply. Might be better than putting the cat amongst the pigeons in your own family.

Your dad or the person on ancestry?

Oreyt · 22/01/2025 12:58

I tried that. Can't see how.

I'm just thinking if the match could mean anything else but it doesn't seem
to match up however I look.

Thanks.

JandamiHash · 22/01/2025 12:58

Oh sorry just seen your update!

Yes I think message them to say you believe you’re related and would love to find out how

Oreyt · 22/01/2025 12:58

@JandamiHash

Can't see anything for this guy just a name. He doesn't have a tree public or private.

OP posts:
Oreyt · 22/01/2025 12:59

Just shows you. I only did it for my mum then I got myself one to find ancestors to add to my tree 😬😬

I’m not sure I have a tree. It been a couple of year since I did it. I only went on there out of curiosity.
