Ancestry updated origins

They’ve updated it all very recently. DM now shows as 22% Germanic, I think that was only about 4% before.

A large part of her family tree is south east England - Essex, Sussex, Suffolk. But nothing German or even from the continent unless you go back to 1680, And there are enough DNA matches with the right cousins/ 2nd 3rd cousins to be pretty confident a few generations back. So I’m guessing this is from a strong Saxon/ Angle / Jute ancestry matching quite closely with modern day native Germans.

I only come out as 4% Germanic so even more odd (I know we don’t inherit evenly but her 22% to me 4% is quite a German loss!).

I've just looked at mine and I've lost Irish and Italian, gained France, Wales, Scotland! Very random as the Irish/Italian fits with my research from records and the others don't at all. Annoying as I was quite smug that Ancestry DNA matched my research really closely, and now it doesn't at all😂

I'd be interested how many other people's results have changed in odd ways.

Morph22010 · 15/10/2024 21:56

My mums was 100% Irish before she’s now got 3% Scottish and 2% Norway

Obsessedwithsourdough · 15/10/2024 22:07

That doesn’t sound right at all.

DuckBushCityLimit · 15/10/2024 22:08

I've lost Ireland, Scotland, and Wales, which I'm a bit surprised about. Also gone are the 1% Sweden & Denmark and 2% Basque that I had been quite chuffed to get in the previous update. Gains are Germanic Europe (5%), Netherlands (6%), and North Africa (1%).

NorthWestWoes · 15/10/2024 22:11

I’ve gone from 50% Scottish to 65% Scottish, and lost my tiny bits of Welsh and Irish.

I do have various Irish ancestors but they’re probably the same DNA stock as the Scots ( probably Protestant).

Oh dear. Have just suggested DH checks his update. He's not happy with the new results Grin

Well, Ive gone from being
69% English,
22% Swedish,
1% Finnish and
8% Scottish/Irish to being
90% English/Irish/Scottish
4% German,
4% Dutch,
1% Swedish,
1% Belgian

That's a hell of a change!

Game0fCrones · 15/10/2024 22:20

I wish there was a way to see which country profile came from which parent. All it says is 'Parent 1' and 'Parent 2' - well yes but Who is parent 1?

PolaroidPrincess · 15/10/2024 22:24

Do tell

He was really proud of being 22% Welsh, now gone down to 9%.

He's also got more Germanic. We always get Germans talking to him if we're in Europe and I couldn't believe the first lot of results came back with so little Germanic.

It's pretty obvious with mine - my mum is very English, and the 57 varieties come from my dad! I notice they've made the parent information available to paying subscribers only, though, so I can't see it any more.

greatoceanroad · 15/10/2024 22:38

I was wondering this too. I was 87% Irish, 11% Scotland and 2% Wales now I am 100% Irish. Interesting to see it has happened to others

I paid just to see this and I'm still none the wiser.

It's all so vague. The journeys through time only talks vaguely about when the wars broke out, I mean, honestly, paying for a history lesson? I thought it would give my ancestors specific history (which I can get from their birth, marriage and death records anyway.

I do think its a bit of a con, especially now that even if you're a subscriber, most records are hidden behind the 'Pro' level paywall.

PurpleChrayn · 15/10/2024 22:48

I've suddenly acquired Netherlands ancestry, and lost some Irish DNA.

Perplexing.

MsMarble · 15/10/2024 22:51

The new update is rubbish. The maps dont work and my results are less accurate than they were previously.....

OnlyFrench · 15/10/2024 22:51

I've gone from 38% Scottish to 2% an 19% Norwegian to none!

LadyGaGasPokerFace · 15/10/2024 22:53

I’ve just found out today I’m matching 25% DNA with someone. 1,742cm 😳

Blimey! I match 50 per cent with each of my kids! Does it suggest what the relationship might be? Does it give their age?

Pocketfullofdogtreats · 15/10/2024 23:03

I'm very pleased because at last it shows my French ancestry for the first time. I understand that it used to be against the law in France to do DNA for fun (not sure if it's still the case) but assumed that was why they didn't have a panel to test against.

LadyGaGasPokerFace · 16/10/2024 00:11

@Pocketfullofdogtreats they are in the 50-59 age bracket. They say close family. They’re in the next county. He has a cousin who I’m 926cm related to.

HoHoHoliday · 16/10/2024 02:05

I no longer trust or value the ancestry results at all. I did the DNA test around ten years ago. Over the years I've had several messages about the DNA origins and breakdown changing. My DNA split now is completely different to the original one from a decade ago - the is no part of it that's the same.

This. Doesn't it just prove that it's all pretty much bollocks?

Also, presumably it all depends on where you stick the pin in history. The only thing that we all know for sure is that we're from one woman in Africa.

coxesorangepippin · 16/10/2024 02:15

Do they actually know what they're doing at all???

rainfallpurevividcat · 16/10/2024 02:22

In terms of fleecing money out of people, almost certainly.
