1921 census - adresses?

knittingaddict · 06/01/2022 12:30

I've downloaded a handful of images of the 1921 census, but none of them have the address on there. Does anyone know if the transcripts will include an address? At £3.50 for an image and £2.50 for the transcript I don't want to waste any of my money getting both and still not having an address for them.

Image has the address on it. Personally I would just pay the £3.50.

knittingaddict · 06/01/2022 12:50

I downloaded 3 this morning. One was for what looked ike a barracks and didn't have the address on the downloaded page. Not too surprised about this.

The other two did not have an address or a place for an address. They were both residential.

Ordered one transcript for a different person and the address was on there.

I don't really trust transcripts and I've already found errors having only viewed 4 entries.

Where do you see an address?

I had the same problem but go onto the next page (click right arrow) and it should say there. Or when you save the information to your tree it should come up there.

maximist · 06/01/2022 13:11

I know you've already paid for these, but if you want many more it seems it would be cheaper to pay for a month's membership (assuming you're using findmypast). I was looking at it earlier but left it for now.

knittingaddict · 06/01/2022 13:11

I don't have a tree on findmypast, only on Ancestry. There is only one image that is downloaded.

I have a membership. It still costs that much on top of the membership.

Don't download it to your computer. Just click to open it in the browser. There should be several pages or thumbnails at the bottom. Scroll through to the front page where the address is listed.

Sorry to hijack this thread but does anyone know how to find the history of a house? We live in a 200 year old quirky house and I’ve been desperate to search for the previous occupants and the actual history of the house, I don’t mind paying to get this info but like the OP you can’t search for addresses! I have absolutely no idea of the names of people who lived here or who built it, just obviously my address

Angel2702 · 06/01/2022 14:32

You can search by address, there are two options on the search page, at the top of search box it says search for an individual, next to that is a tab search for an address that’s the tab you need to click on before searching.

Angel2702 · 06/01/2022 14:33

The addresses are included, you need to go to the bottom of the record and click on additional materials tab to find it.

theonlysallyg · 06/01/2022 14:46

I had the same problem with finding the address and which is on the next page, click on arrow to the right. Go to My Records at the top and you will see the entries you have already purchased click on camera and it downloads automatically. Hope this helps.

Thank you so much! I’ve never seen an address tab (I’m a bit of a caveman when it comes to IT) so I’ll go back on and do it! Thank you so much . Is the address tab on ancestry.com, the censuses or another one? I’m on ancestry and had a quick look at censuses but happy to sign up for others if needs be

Once again thank you so much 😊

That's a con! I nearly subscribed to get access, it doesn't make it clear at all on the subscription pages. I'll wait till it gets onto Ancestry.

Trodonplug · 06/01/2022 15:10

Can I jump on and ask more about searching by address? I search by street name and location and I get '1 result'. I click on this and it comes up with '23 households" for that street. Is there no way of narrowing down these 23 households by house name/number. Or is it expected that I'll pay up to 23 x £2.50 to find the relevant house?

When I do that it seems to download the image again as a jpeg and there is only one image to view.

I will have another look when I get home.

It's not really a con, although it is overpriced I think. The cost of transcribing the census is enormous and needs to be paid for somehow. Eventually it will be included in the subscription.

@Dogmum40 Contact your local archive and see what they have. It's probably attached to one of your county/borough libraries. You may also be able to access various databases with a library card or on computers at your local library.

I like this site: astreetnearyou.org/ you can search for your address to see if any WW1 casualties lived there.

I am finding the search for the 1921 census a pain in the bum to search with. It isn't as straight forward as the normal search. I think with time it will be easier and more powerful but for the time being its taking some getting used to.

Its definitely easier to search forwards (from information I know from 1911 or before) rather than search backwards. If I know where someone is born, that really is helping a lot.

But searching backwards is proving more difficult on the standard search. The advanced search is much much better (particularly the feature about other household members) and probably worth going straight to rather than mucking about with the standard search if you have a fair idea of what you are looking for already.

I'm also finding some of the transcriptions somewhat dubious. I've found a record for a male in the household under a female name - think Albert under the name Agnes, which explains why I couldn't find him and it took ages to find the record I wanted (not helped by his daughter and wife also being under two more transcription errors - I got there eventually by searching surname in the area I knew they were living).

On the whole I'm dead pleased with the information I've found today. Some of it I've been waiting for years to get. I've just bought the transcriptions and not the images. Lots of "Oh that explains a lot" moments.

I've had to stop myself spending a fortune today - but I've got enough to be getting on with in terms of my research. Its filled in lots of gaps.

I actually think the opposite tbh.

I've got most of my information already so don't need to subscribe atm as thats a big lump sum. It means I can just buy the individual records I want without a full subscription, bit by bit for now.

I'm sure the rest will be added to the subscription service in a few years time - as was the case for both the 1939 register and the 1911 census so if you are happy to wait I'm it will be added.

I'm keen to get particular information so I'm quite happy to pay. To me its worth £2.50 to find out stuff.

You CAN also get a certain amount of information about who is living with a certain person if you search the right parametres and have a narrow enough search - plus it will give you a certain amount of details of who is living with someone with a mouse over before you hit purchase. This is giving me little details without needing to buy a record. Its not ideal but it still has helped me with less important members of the family.

You can narrow down the search by area, then work through the streets, I have done this with my house for every census. I live in a village though, I don’t know how easy it is in a large city. Are you looking on Ancestry ? As i can guide you through the process if so.

Ooh following out of interest.

DelusionsOfGrandiflora · 06/01/2022 18:11

It took me while to realise that the house address was on the next page! Luckily, I discovered three generations of my family all living together in one house. Bargain!

knittingaddict · 06/01/2022 18:55

Are the people saying that I can click backwards and forwrds through the pages talking about the 1921 census specifically?

I use FMP all the times and understand how to go through the census pages on the other census, but this new census works completely differently. You can pay for and view the one page/entry and that page doesn't appear to have the address on it.

If I try to view the page on the website under "my records" it downloads as a jpeg and is just the one page. It doesn't download additional pages with the address on.

I've only looked at 4 entries. One had Herbert instead of Hubert. Not terrible, but it clearly says Hubert. One was Borden instead of Barden and again, it was quite clearly Barden. Another has Marine somebody. I haven't downloaded that one yet, but I'm almost 100% positive that this will be wrong.

Frustratingly I couldn't find a report button on the 1921 census, so can't correct it.
