Any idea what this photo shows? I’ve no idea who anyone is and because it’s mounted in card there are no written clues.

At first glance I thought it was a triple wedding before the men headed off to war. But the lady on the far right with flowers has no obvious groom!

They seem a bit old for it to be a confirmation

I think the lady in the middle is the bride and the other two are bridesmaids - their headdresses are the same.

GreyishDays · 25/11/2020 14:10

They do. But I don’t really know. Do you know who any of them are or anything?

ApolloandDaphne · 25/11/2020 14:10

I wonder if the two women on each side are bridesmaids.

drspouse · 25/11/2020 14:12

They are definitely bridesmaids. Are you confused because they are wearing veils?

GreyishDays · 25/11/2020 14:14

I was but it seems bridesmaids sometimes wear veils. Anyone know if it’s regional/certain religions?

Have a look at this article. It suggests it wasn't unusual for bridesmaids to wear a veil.

FadedRed · 25/11/2020 14:16

The girls at the ends of the group are bridesmaids/maids of honour, as are the two younger girls holding bouquets.

GreyishDays · 25/11/2020 14:17

That’s really interesting. Look what I’ve found.

No I don’t know who anybody is unfortunately. That’s interesting about adult bridesmaids in veils too.
I guess the couple in the middle are the bride and groom in that case. One of the menfolk at the back vaguely resembles my maternal grandfather but I will need to obtain a magnifier to get a closer look.

Are there any clues like a name and town of a photographer? It can be really helpful to look for a local Facebook group if there is, and post the picture. I'd say WW2 but I could be wrong. Social media groups could also give clues about things like uniform.

HollowTalk · 25/11/2020 19:25

Three sisters getting married and the photo is all of their family - one of the bridegrooms took the photo?

gassylady · 25/11/2020 20:12

Photographer is in my mums hometown but business no longer in existence. @ I thought WW2 as well. Will just remain a mystery I guess such a shame they didn’t write on the back!

If you know the town then definitely post on the local community facebook pages. Someone will recognise their granny or the location.

drspouse · 26/11/2020 08:43

Clothes suggest 1930s, too much fabric for wartime!

I shouldn’t laugh at those photos... but I shall chuckle!
Knittedfairies · 26/11/2020 08:53

It's an interesting photograph; it almost looks as if the people at the back have been added in - what are they standing on? If it's a slope, it's steep!
I'd agree it's a wedding; bride and groom in the middle and veiled bridesmaids.

gassylady · 26/11/2020 09:42

The people at the back look to be standing on a steep path winding up towards the top of the photo.
I agree I think it’s a single bride and groom with two veiled bridesmaids parents and maybe brothers in uniform. Going to hang on to it as I’d like to dig into my grandfathers family tree a bit more

I used the My Heritage colour enhancer, and it looks like the lady in the middle is the bride, as the other two have patterned sections at knee-height on their dresses. The one on the right is definitely wearing the same colour as the bridesmaids (the colorizer tends to be rather nervous about choosing strong colours, but they were probably in pink or apricot). The one on the left has come out white, prob because she's in stronger sunlight.

Also, as the uniforms have come out navy/black, they could be police/fire service rather than army.

gassylady · 13/12/2020 20:13

@FlamedToACrisp thank you so much. That looks amazing. One of my great uncles was in the merchant navy not aware of any fire or policemen but what a great lead. I’ve never heard of my heritage and would never have thought about trying to colour the picture.

About what year was the photo taken ? @gassylady

gassylady · 21/12/2020 17:33

@LadyEloise sadly I have no idea I thought it was WW2 and army uniforms it the colourised ones are not all khaki so I’m really not sure

Very eautiful picture!

Fruitinator · 09/02/2021 16:54

I was wondering if the uniform is actually earlier than WW2.

It looks a lot like a WW1 uniform.

Geek Alert When volunteers were recruited to form what is known as 'Kitchener's Mob or Army' there was a shortage of Khaki materials for uniform so some were issued with a dark blue denim uniform in the interim or during training. Once there was enough Khaki, it is believed the blue was collected up from troops and then reissued for prisoners of war.
