Using DNA to track birth family

Dh has just had his dna results back. Turns out that as well as being a lot more British than he thought, he may have found a relative. In fact, the dna strand says possible half sibling/ aunt/niece.

Trouble is, all we have to go on is his mother's maiden name for a family tree and I feel like we're at a dead end. I think the mother may be related to a man who pops up in a couple of trees, who could be her father. I also think 2 of the men I found could be twins, but possibly Scottish, so I'm struggling to find birth records. I'm going round on circles.

Any experienced detectives offer any advice?

You are so lucky OP to get such close matches. I too am helping dh, and the closest match on AncestryDNA is a shared great great grandmother on his mother's side. He knows about his mother's side, she is deceased and he wanted to find who his father is/was and get more information but unfortunately the closest match ( finally got ) is 4 times great grandparents but at least he has something to go on.
Just suddenly struck lucky, i had already gone down the wrong side of that DNA link but something just clicked into place and voila his father ( deceased )is who he was told it may be.
Still hoping there will be closer links on Ancestry in the future.
Down a rabbit hole is right !!!!

Update.

Dh got a message back from the close match, who turns out to be his aunty. She doesn't want him to contact his mother, as no one knows, but that's fine. She, and her brother, do want to meet him. They've been messaging this week and swapping photos. It's probably better than we hoped, really. Kind of expected it all to fizzle out. Made me a bit emosh, to be honest; 50 years without seeing who you look like and now being able to make those connections.
