After swearing never to touch one of them, I am now considering getting one for my 40th.

Any recommendations or words of caution?

I have ordered a Kindle, should get here tomorrow so I can tell you more then.

After annoying everyone much research I settled for the Kindle2 as I only wanted it for reading, not for looking at PDFs or books, for which the Kindle DX would be better. Or for surfing the web, for which the iPad would be better. The eBook store for the iPad did not give me English books, as I am on German iTunes so that was another strike.

Just for reading, I think that the Kindle will be best.

What are you wanting to read on it?

mankyscotslass · 04/07/2010 15:33

I think it will be mostly books, probably some classics, some science fiction/fantasy, and some newer stuff too.

I'm going cross eyed looking for reviews, and also comparing which books are available in what format.

I liked the look of the Kindle, but only being able to down load from amazon may be a concern? I don't know

I was the same. DH was begging me to just order one, any one but just do it and stop bugging him.

Fwiw, I found that Amazon has a very good selection of books. Apple's eBooks was awful. I want to be able to search on the computer for books and synch with the Kindle, not search on the eReader itself.

mankyscotslass · 04/07/2010 16:49

I'm leaning more for the Kindle now really, but not sure when to order it, I keep seeing that they will do it on amazon.co.uk later this yar, as well as the books so there would be no faffing around converting currency, but I don't know what later means.

Decisions decisions....

Depends on the exchange rate, could go up or down. Once they fix the price they are going to be stuck with it.

mankyscotslass · 04/07/2010 17:01

True.

I'm going into town next weekend to have a look at the screen sizes before I make my final choice.

DH is fed up with me I think!

I have a kindle2 - it's fine, does what it's supposed to, but I don't love it

what I like about it is it's v easy to read on in virtually any light conditions, it's pretty light, books download virtually instantly and the battery lasts for ages

what I'm not wild about is the page size - just a bit too small, so if you read fast you're constantly clicking the next page button - which brings me onto my next semi-gripe - the rather clunky buttons (I suppose I've just got so used to touch screen technology the kindle feels a bit old-fashioned in a weird way) - I'd also really like the odd picture every now and then - and the book selection can be a bit hit and miss - classics are v good, and I'm currently reading Jonathan Coe's latest but David Mitchell's new book, for example, wasn't available

MmeLindt · 04/07/2010 19:40

That is interesting, Basildon. It was one of the things that bothered me - the page size, but not enough to fork out the extra for the Kindle DX.

I suspect that they will bring out a new Kindle in the coming months, as a real alternative to iPad, but I did not want to wait any longer.

CMOTdibbler · 04/07/2010 19:42

I've got a Kindle as well - and I love it. Really easy to read, light to hold with one hand, the store is easy to use, and I like the page turn buttons as you can hold it with one hand and not have to put your drink or whatever down.

I'm a very fast reader, and so page turn a lot, and others were annoying wheras the Kindle is fine. Fabulous battery life too

MmeLindt · 05/07/2010 11:47

It is here! Off to the beach this afternoon so will report back on how it is.

So far, I can say that it is better than I expected. High quality plastic, the screen really is like reading a book. It was already set up when it arrived (as I already had a Kindle account for my iPhone). Seems to be very easy to operate.

mankyscotslass · 05/07/2010 18:39

I hope it's good! DH just came downstairs and told me he has ordered me one.

I have been looking at the Nook

or the

Libre

MmeLindt · 06/07/2010 08:57

The problem with the Libre is that you cannot download books, you have to transfer them from your PC. I wanted something truly portable.

First impressions of the Kindle are good. It is light, easy to use, has a very basic web browser (copes with BBC mobile website but not MN). That does not bother me so much, as I have an iPhone.

Downloading books is very easy and quick. So far, all the books that I wanted have been available.

The screen could be a bit bigger and it takes some getting used to that it is not backlit like an iPhone. This means that reading in the dark is not an option, but also that there is less eye strain and no problem reading in the full sunshine. It is truly like reading a book.

Did your DH get fed up of you procrastinating? Mine came really fast, I only ordered it on Thursday morning and it arrived Monday morning. It would have been even faster if it had not been the weekend. I ordered this case. It has not arrived yet.

kreecherlivesupstairs · 06/07/2010 09:09

I really want an ebook reader but we are so skint I can't justify it. Maybe father christmas will bring me one.

mankyscotslass · 06/07/2010 09:53

MMe, Yes he got fed up with me asking for his opinion, and was going crosseyed at all the links I was sending him.

He has just come in and said it it the DX he has ordered for me!

He has apparently ordered a cover too, but says its the plain black leather one, so we will see how it handles!

Keep an eye out on eBay. I guess there are a lot of techie folk who will upgrade to a newer one as they keep improving them.

Mangy
Oh, lovely DH. He sounds very sweet.

mankyscotslass · 06/07/2010 11:24

He has has his moments.

I'm setting up my wish list on amazon.com now, and some of the books I want seem to be dirt cheap!

OP posts:
SandyisinCaldwell · 06/07/2010 12:06

I'm hoping the Kindle DX comes down in price - its now $189 and hoping by christmas it will be lower - I have lots of books on PDF on my computer just waiting to put onto a kindle - wish I could order one tomorrow!

SandyisinCaldwell · 06/07/2010 12:07

I'm leaving my books lying about everywhere in a hope my DH will say just buy the bloody kindle, I'm sick of these books everywhere!

SandyisinCaldwell · 06/07/2010 12:08

Mme: how much did your kindle cost?

MmeLindt · 07/07/2010 08:08

Sandy
I paid $189. You can only order them from Amazon, I think. Unless you can find one on eBay cheaper.

Am charging mine for the first time today. I let the battery run right down as I heard that it better than constantly recharging. I got it on Monday and have used it a lot and have not switched the wireless off. I have just read up and apparently with the wireless off it can last about two weeks.

mankyscotslass · 07/07/2010 09:48

ooh MmeLindt, sounds good!

I am getting excited now!
