The battery gets better after a week or so of use. Conditioning, I think they called it.

Have you found the Android Forums website yet? I learnt a lot there. There are specific forums for each phone.

here's the link to the HTC desire page.

the battery charging is driving me nuts - I'm having to charge it everyday! I'm not even really using the internet on it - just gmail and gtalk.

I think this is a problem with most smartphones, I hear the iphone 4 is a slight improvement but not much. There is an android forum floating around the internet somewhere which can tell you how to turn things you don't realise are on off so helping the battery life.

I'm on my second Android phone. Had a Hero, now have a Desire. I do charge it every night, but then I work 4 hour shifts and use it on my commutes so it does get a bit of a work out, and does last until I get home to plug it in. I use the control panel widget and keep things like Bluetooth turned off if I'm not using it, and turn off the backlight if the battery is getting low and I'#m in a well lit room - just got to remember to turn it back on before you go outside or you'll never see the screen! If you go into settings you can see what applications are running - you might be surprised. Some of my apps stay on in te background or boot up when the phone is switched on even if there's no need, like games etc, so I rturn those off unless I want to use them.

There are spare batteries available and desktop charging docks that charge both the phone and the battiery, but as others have said it got better after a week or so, so I didn't bother getting them in the end.

These are the Andriod apps I'm using:

Calorie Counter
Compass
doubleTwist (music player which allows you to sync iTunes playlists from your pc)
eBuddy (for msn messenger and Facebook chat)
ElJay (client for updating LiveJournal)
FeedSquares (app for Google Reader)
Foursquare
FxCamera (allows you to take Polaroid and ToyCamera style photos)
GDocs (for editing and syncing Google Docs)
Goggles (Google visual search, very cool)
Google Sky Map (shows constellations based on your location)
Last.fm
mooLa (budgeting and finance tool)
Movies (movie reviews and times)
My Days (to track periods etc)
myPlayer (BBC iPlayer)
Google Navigation
Photoshop Mobile
Springpad (to do lists and notes)
Talk to Me (translator)

and these games:
Abduction!
Flood-It!
Jewels
LineUp
Mahjong
Mazeoid
Poke A Mole
Traffic Jam
Trio PRO
Word Drop
Zombie, Run!

How do you interpret all the warnings before you install? They look sort of scary. I just got my desire today and am eager to download some apps for me and the dc's.

notanidea · 15/08/2010 22:36

been using thtc desire for over a month now. What is the best way to download music. I have never owned anyother smartphone or ipod- a complete novice. Is there any docking sustem similar to iphone?

Fenouille · 26/10/2010 16:26

Can anybody recommend me a good keyboard replacement to speed up texting? It's for a Desire, if that makes any difference.

NetworkGuy · 27/10/2010 12:25

Useful thread for lists of Apps.

Just wondered if anyone has found the quantity of data downloaded is high for something like Google Maps ...

Do any of you monitor how much you have downloaded each month (either on your phone if there is an App, or from your phone network) ?

HouseOfBamboo · 28/10/2010 10:25

MyPlayer is good for listening / watching again BBC programmes

For those looking for appointment reminders, the Calendar apps that come with the phone should do this. They act as a diary that you can enter stuff on for on each day, and set up beeping and display reminders.

Plonkargghhh · 29/10/2010 13:44

Sorry to jump on the thread, but does anyone know, or can point me in the right direction of advise regarding the 'task killer'

I have it downloaded on my Desire, but am getting conflicting advice as to whether it's useful or whether it drains the battery more.

Also, how do I know which version my phone is running (2.1 or 2.2)?

Thanks

PS - am keep an eye on the keyboard recommendations too - I'm finding texting a real chore ...

nocake · 29/10/2010 13:51

I was using a task killer but it didn't seem to be doing much so I stopped using it. My battery life seems to be about the same with or without it so I don't use it any more.

For those of you complaining about battery life... your smartphone is a small computer, not a phone, and is on all the time. How long does your laptop last on a single charge?

There is an app that speeds up keyboard use by following the pattern your finger makes. I just need to find it [hgrin]

nocake · 29/10/2010 13:52

Found it... the keyboard app is called Swype.

Plonkargghhh · 30/10/2010 17:43

I've had a look for the swype on the market and I can't find it. I've looked on the android site and it seems to be a trial on the Desire, not a pre-load or available app? Confused
I'm not quite sure what I need to be doing - I'll have to read into it a bit more ...

I have uninstalled the task killer as it appears, from what I've read, that Froyo (2.2 - which is what mine is apparantly) doesn't need the task killer.

Thanks Smile
