Ive spent hours researching and still none the wiser - can you wise people please help me.
I am on the road a lot, so need to be able to access email, respond and generally use it as my portable office.
Which would you choose?

iPhone

Heathcliffscathy · 09/06/2010 10:55

probably blackberry, you get all your emails from all your accounts (if you have several) immediately). i think iphone is a fun phone, blackberry is a great work phone.

just a personal opinion but i have got both.

MmeLindt · 09/06/2010 11:03

I have to (reluctantly) agree with Sophable.

There has to be a reason that most of the business contacts of DH all have Blackberries and their wives have iPhones.

iPhone for fun, Blackberry for business.

PrettyCandles · 09/06/2010 11:05

I have an iPhone, not a Blackberry. You can use email perfectly easily on iPhone, even without MobileMe - which I don't have. Synchronising is a doddle. TBH I don't see the point in MobileMe, except perhaps for the remot locating and wiping facility.

I could do with a bit more word-processing functionality, a spell-checker wd be nice and I definitely want to be able to add words to the predictive text function.

The one real weakness I think iPhone has as a business tool is its calendar. It's a perfectly useable calendar but probably not sophisticated enough for business use. OTOH it syncs happily enough with Outlook, so if you organise your appointments from Ourlook and just use the iPhone calendar to keep track then that shouldn't be a problem.

CornishKK · 09/06/2010 11:05

Depends on the industry? Blackberry for banking, iPhone for marketing and sexy media jobs .

How long will the emails be that you need to send on it? I found the Blackberry keyboard better for long messages but MUCH, MUCH prefer the iPhone generally. And I use the iPhone apps for finding my way to places and tracking down the nearest Pizza Express and other essentials.

I'd probably use an iPhone (get a car charger if you are driving) and a small notebook of some sort.

MmeLindt · 09/06/2010 11:06

PC
I have the google calender app on my iPhone, it is much better than the original one.

MmeLindt · 09/06/2010 11:07

Oh, and I have heard that the Swiss banks won't let their staff have iPhones because of security issues. There are some concerns about it being easy to hack into.

CornishKK · 09/06/2010 11:08

MmeLindt - I got a Blackberry in my finance job because I worked for a big corporation that had invested in a Blackberry server and all the schizzle. The decision was not based on a difference in functionality.

When I went to work for a sexy marketing agency I chose my own phone and got an iPhone like all the sexy creatives on the third floor.

I am very shallow though.

CornishKK · 09/06/2010 11:09

Might have to try the Google calendar app, cheers!

pinkbraces · 09/06/2010 11:43

Thanks everyone its as I thought
Iphone = sexy, blackberry = efficiency.

From everything I have read there doesnt seem to be mcuh in it - I think I will go for the sexy Iphone

MmsLindt, what's the Google calendar app called?

The only real difference in practice is the keypad- if you want a real one, get the BB; if you're happy with the touch screen, get the iPhone. Out of the box, there's nothing you can do with one that you can't do with the other, although BBs seem to have better battery life.

BecauseImWorthIt · 10/06/2010 14:41

I hated my BB with a passion and love my iPhone.

All my e-mail accounts are on there (6 altogether) and it's not a problem sending/receiving. Attachments are much better on the iPhone.

There are so many useful apps on the iPhone too - maps, world time zones, skype, sat nav - much more flexibility than the BB.

CMOTdibbler · 10/06/2010 14:42

We aren't allowed iphones as the data costs out of the UK are horrendous apparently. I've got a Blackberry Storm and it's lovely though

Heathcliffscathy · 10/06/2010 22:10

BIWI but don't you find it annoying tha tyou have to click into the diff accounts rather than just getting all your emails as per blackberry...more faffing imo.

PrettyCandles · 10/06/2010 23:34

I would not want to get all my emails together. I far prefer having separate accounts, so that different conversations or roles don't get confused.

BecauseImWorthIt · 11/06/2010 08:42

I actually find it more useful to see them separately - of the 6 accounts, 2 are specifically for me (my work address and my personal address) and the other 4 are for the company and three of my colleagues, so it can be quite useful to see who is saying what to whom.

Blondeshavemorefun · 11/06/2010 14:38

agree seperate accounts on iphone are easier - i have 3 emails set up and easy to read and reply

my friend had a bb and said to get that, but all the other had iphone and after having a play i prefer the iphone

you can use the push facilty to get email quickly tho does drain battery so make sure have spare charger for car and in handbag with plug on it

BecauseImWorthIt · 11/06/2010 16:05

Yes, battery life is surprisingly short - the only criticism I have of the iPhone.

MmeLindt · 20/06/2010 12:50

PrettyCandles
Sorry, I kept meaning to come back and tell you the name of the app. It is CalenGoo.

NetworkGuy · 20/06/2010 17:10

"you can use the push facilty to get email quickly tho does drain battery so make sure have spare charger for car and in handbag with plug on it"

Presumably most people could charge their iPhone in the office if they use a desktop or laptop with a USB port. I can charge 3 or 4 different phones from a USB port, which only needs a short cable with a standard plug for PC end and a mini-USB (or maybe they call it micro-USB - anyway, one common for cameras and MP3 players) for the phone end.

MmeLindt · 20/06/2010 19:19

I am considering one of these solar chargers for my iPhone.

MmeRedWhiteandBlueberry · 20/06/2010 19:40

I get my work email on my iPhone. It is on a Microsoft Exchange server and arrives in my iPhone inbox at exactly the same time as my work PC - I don't have to fetch it.

The iPhone is just so good at everything.

NetworkGuy · 21/06/2010 11:16

Sometimes mail servers can be overloaded by hitting them with 'any new mail' requests faster than once every 5 minutes. I don't know how frequently the iPhone checks, or whether some data is passed back to the mobile network and that does the checking, but there can be drawbacks.

If the 'push facility' is being done by repeatedly checking for mail, then it sounds misnamed to me.
