Geeky stuff

I have a mobile; I use it for that rather old-fashioned purpose of making phone calls - what else could I do if I bought a new one?

I get the taking photos (but I never understood why)

But what else can modern ones do?

I got a new one recently.
It can be an mp3 player too, which is handy for the bus, etc. It came with headphones.
ANd make little video clips of ds, etc.
And it can all be backed up on the pc/laptop. Phone numbers, theh lot.
Oh, and a calendar and alarm for appointments too.

I find it quite handy tbh as I never remember the camera and the camera on the phone is really very good.

How's your wee girl after her poorliness? Better, I hope.

nickytwotimes · 12/12/2009 19:44

Btw, mine is a fairly bog standard one. Came free with a tenner a month contract including 100 minutes and more texts than I'll ever need. A Sony one. Very pleased with it.

Arsed · 12/12/2009 19:46

I'm posting this from my phone

my phone does everything I need. I rarely put the laptop on now.. Email, eBay, amazon, calender , camera, radio, watch tv, films, games, news, track my period . Translate, dictionary..
I could go on forever !

Oh, that's true, internet access too.
I live in the arse end of nowhere though so no mobile internet reception.

Katymac · 12/12/2009 19:47

Hmm - She is poorly again sigh Thanks for asking we are hoping that a holiday will perk her up - But DH was in hosp on Friday for a procedure so she was a bit ??? about that

Interesting - I might take the plunge

I use it more and more as a diary now. Thing is, it's the only sure thing that I have on me at all times, when I'm out of the house, so it's the best place to keep track of everything.

It depends on your lifestyle I think. I wanted one that had room for lots of music and internet access. I spend a lot of time, sitting by a lake whilst DD and DH dive, so I'm on my own for lot of the time. Means I can logon here, whilst they are under the water and listen to a bit of music at the same time.

giddyupRudolph · 12/12/2009 19:50

You could MN!

Arsed · 12/12/2009 19:51

If you you've got wireless it would matter if your reception was shit

Arsed · 12/12/2009 19:52

Wouldn't !

OrmIrian · 12/12/2009 19:52

Well judging by DS#1's excitment about some model or other he has his eye on, I think it must contain a sonic screwdriver and a matter transporter of some kind

WilfSell · 12/12/2009 19:52

See my HTC Hero thread. Smartphones like this can do EVERYTHING bar make the tea. The iPhone, Palm Pre and HTC hero (and some Blackberries) can hold and instantly update a calendar, and you can sync the calendar with other members of your family - this is one of the main reasons I am upgrading. It can work as a GPS so you can find out where you are, what is nearby, directions, maps etc. It can be used to surf the internet, text, send and read emails, quickly update Facebook, and Twitter. It can play music of high quality and take great pictures.

And on such phones there are LOTS of apps (applications) you can buy. For example, on the iPhone you can instantly connect to Ocado, or turn it into a spirit level (should you need to hang a picture while you're out and about )

I currently have a phone, a camera and a PDA (electronic diary). A smart phone will mean I only have to have one gadget.

Katymac · 12/12/2009 19:52

OK

Say I wanted:
MN & Shopping
Diary

What should I buy (or more seriously what should I avoid)?

iPhones are incredible.. I looove mine !

I had a htc before this, it was horrid.

giddyupRudolph · 12/12/2009 20:08

I heart my iphone too. Was a sceptic.

mimsum · 12/12/2009 20:58

dh says if my iphone came with a husband app he'd be redundant

I was like you - I'd had my old phone for years, since dd was a baby (she's 7 now) and all I did was phone and occasionally send a text, however the buttons started jamming and the battery started deteriorating

dh got me an iphone as a present - and it's just fab the calendar is brilliant and it's always on me so I don't forget to put things in it, I can write notes to myself or record a voice memo, check emails, go online, listen to music, read books, find directions to somewhere, alarm clock, stopwatch, test the kids on their times tables (oh, and use it as a lightsaber ds put that one on ...)

I have to restrain myself from stroking it ...

Katymac · 12/12/2009 21:13

Hmm

OK Tesco say I can a phone & a wii & 75 minutes a month & 250 texts for £25 a month (for 2 yrs)

Why is that a bad deal?

I seem to win (iyswim) what is the down side?

Mind you is expensive

I possibly want an iphone but I am sure I can't afford it

OP posts:
mimsum · 12/12/2009 22:02

I get 600 minutes a month and 1200 texts and unlimited internet for £19.50 a month and not tied into a contract (rolling 30 day contract) - that's from O2 - dh did have to buy the iphone though ..

do you want a wii? you might find you're better off getting one separately

Katymac · 12/12/2009 22:08

Probably - DD wants one but I am wavering

I only spend about a tenner a month so it's a lot of money

How much more would I spend if I went on MN too and got emails???

OP posts:
Katymac · 13/12/2009 13:28

Still wavering....do I need emails & MN on my phone?

I went to Asda today & they wouldn't show me any phones - all I could go on was the picture

I like the idea of qwerty but the keys were all so small - do they do a slightly bigger type of phone with bigger keys?

DoesntChristmasDragOn · 13/12/2009 14:10

I dithered about getting one but I adore it. I can order my shopping from Ocado whilst waiting for the DSs to come out of school. In fact, I keep a running shopping list which means I don't forget stuff - I can add it to my basket when I think of it.

Katymac · 13/12/2009 14:37

Yes but would I be able to use it....I'm not terribly techy..........& it's such a lot of money

OP posts:
catinthehat2 · 13/12/2009 14:40

Phone with camera. My story.

Van drives into my vehicle.
I jump out, take pics of van, road, my car etc etc.
Van's insurer offers 50%.
My insurer says, look at Catinthhat's photos, they are quite good aren't they, let's make that 100%.
Van's insurer says oh alright then.
That paid for my phone.

THe end

BelfastBloke · 13/12/2009 14:43

"Yes but would I be able to use it....I'm not terribly techy..........& it's such a lot of money"

If you're not very techy that's exactly WHY you should get an iPhone. It's designed with you in mind.

Rainbowinthesky · 13/12/2009 15:25

Quick hijack. I started a contract for 2 years with orange last Feb. I quite like the idea of an iphone but am ages away of being able to upgrade. Can I buy an iphone myself and then put my sim card in it and use it??
