Um, (cough) what can anyone tell me about iPhones? Does anyone have one & NOT like it?

MitchyInge - you don't have to turn the phone function off in the car - I never do & it's fine. And it will work on lots of the speaker/dock things even if they come up with the 'not made for iPhone message' - you just need to try before you buy.

With the battery you can save a lot of power by turning the screen brightness down - mine's just under halfway & it's fine. I also turn off the automatic email check and Bluetooth which I don't need, and if my battery's running low I can turn off location services and 3G which use a lot of power.

I've never had a 'real' iPod, so I don't know what it is that the iPod fans feel is missing, but it seems fine to me as a music player.

RustyBear · 10/09/2009 20:33

Think what I'm trying to say there is - it's fine...

Corporalcornsilk · 10/09/2009 20:37

hee hee pielight!

navyeyelasH · 10/09/2009 20:38

I hated my iphone but love my HTC magic.

Sorry!

EyeballsintheSky · 10/09/2009 20:40

I have had 8 iPods and the iPhone is absolutely fine as a music player, no issues at all with it. So ner

MitchyInge · 10/09/2009 20:53

it's no biggie really, the charging thing - maybe the newer sound docks charge? ours is seriously old (well, 6 or 7 years I think) and getting a bit wobbly in the connection department

those are good battery saving tips though! and I do need a decent case, even though I knitted a beautiful one recently

MitchyInge · 10/09/2009 20:55

if I don't put mine on airplane mode in my car it makes a horrible noise every time I drive between cells - I might see if I can try it in other people's cars to check if it is something unique to my stereo and/or handsfree thing

Mine works fine in the car. And on the docking station/stereo thing. It did say that it was especially good for iPhones, if anyone is interested it is from Altec Lansing.

Cariboo
I have only got 8GB and it is ok. I wanted 16GB but unfortunately that kind of got lost in translation but I manage. I have not put all the music on, just our favourite playlists. I have 1254 songs on it (just checked) lots of apps and quite a few photos.

MrsMerryHenry · 10/09/2009 21:25

Cariboo - I don't have one (yet!) but have read on moneysavingexpert.com a great way to cut the cost of a contract with O2 - search for 'iphone' on their website (main website, not forums) - it's the bit about cashback websites and how you can downgrade your contract with O2 after 9 months. I think you can save around £60-70 and not have to pay a penny upfront for the phone itself.

MmeLindt · 10/09/2009 21:31

For all you App-Freaks, just discovered a good one. AppBoxPro. Lots of Apps in one App.

Translater, battery life, currency convertor, date calculator, flashlight, holidays, menstrual calender, ruler, unit convertor.

Very good.

Bakersman · 10/09/2009 21:40

I love mine too - never far from my hand. However I do have a bit of criticism for it, as a phone. I find it does not have as good reception as other phones I have had in the past. Actually use my home phone again now as reception at home is crap

seeker · 10/09/2009 21:47

My favourite app is smule Ocarina - it's fabulous!

catinthehat2 · 10/09/2009 21:54

I must recommend the menstrual calculator to DH, I am sure he would find that useful.

Really fancy an iphone but won't buy one until it fulfils the following criteria:

  1. Available on other networks apart from O2 which doesn't provide me with coverage from work to home, which is a pain.
  1. Improves it's camera/video. At the moment my Nokia N95 has a 5mp camera with Carl Zeiss Optics for a great picture. The iphone has to at least match this as I use it loads.
  1. Improves it's battery life.

When the iphone gets this right - as it will - then I'm in.

If you just want a phone, you do not need an iphone.

If you want an all singing, all dancing piece of cool tech then the iphone will fit the bill.

The iphone is great for texting and emailing and on the move internet use. Your contract will dictate how much of it is free. The on screen keyboard is sufficient for most people for this but can be fiddly, especially if you are in a hurry.

As a phone it is a little large to hold to the ear for some. However, its benefits far outway this detail.

Fantastic for downloadable applications. Some free, some not. Some useful applications, some games, some silly applications.

The iphone is good as a temporary mobile office and for games.

The 16 gb is currently sufficient (I expect) for most people. However, as time goes on, more and more apps will appear and if you download video this will eat into it.

Like most things technological, get the best you can afford in terms of future proofing. However, if like most people you change your phone on a regular basis when the compulsory contract term expires then this may not be necessary. Who knows what will come out in the next 12 months that might supercede this great phone.

The biggest difference between the iphone and the new iphone 3gs is the fact that the new version has video recording capability. If you do not need this, then the older (but still very good) iphone might be of better financial value to you.
