In Word?

Go to 'File' - at the bottom of the drop down menu, see if your essay is listed and click on it.

Doodle2U · 20/05/2009 15:42

Also, try in My Recent Documents - go to Start in the bottom, left hand corner and see if you have something just called Documents - click on it and see if it's in there.

Doodle2U · 20/05/2009 15:44

Any good?

slug · 20/05/2009 15:45

Try right clicking on the file.

Choose Open With
Choose Word Pad or Notepad

You may find the bulk of the essay, if a bit garbled. You can copy it and paste it into a new Word document from there.

leothelioness · 20/05/2009 15:46

tried both no and no
It gives me a little windon saying open in 'plain text' rich text' recover any text' but gives a blank doc for all of them
(sobs)

And you can get an extension for technical failure if you really can't locate it. You should be able to though.

Not done something silly like change the colour of your text to white? Try highlighting to make sure. Sort of thing I would do...

moopymoo · 20/05/2009 15:49

Long shot and i appreciate you might not want to do this BUT

email me the files - [email protected] and let me try and open them for you.

Totally understand if you don't want to do this but it might be worth a try.

leothelioness · 20/05/2009 15:51

I will probably be able to get an extention but the thought of having to type it all out again is givng me a panic attack

Don't open word.

Go to My Computer and find where you have saved the document. Right click on the icon.

leothelioness · 20/05/2009 15:54

Doodle2u thank you so much I will try anything at the moment will sent it to you now.

moopymoo · 20/05/2009 15:54

to do system restore on mine you go start menu - all programs - accessories - system tools - system restore. It then asks you to input a date (eg when you had the essay) and then you restart. might magically appear. hth

slug · 20/05/2009 15:54

Check you are opening the actual document, not the 'ownership file' which has the same name but with a ~ in front.

Doodle2U · 20/05/2009 15:55

Ok - am standing by!

leothelioness · 20/05/2009 15:58

Right, before you try a system recovery, reboot your computer. Sometimes this works.

This is from one of the support websites

There are several ways to recover information contained in a data file from within Word. You can sometimes recover information in a Word document by inserting the file into another Word document. To do so, create a new Word file using the Normal.dot template by going to File | New | Blank Document. When the blank page appears, click Insert | File. When the Insert File dialog box opens, select the troublesome Word document and click OK. The file should appear in the new document. You can then save the file to a new file name and continue.

If this doesn?t work, you can try to open the file by using Word?s linking feature. You?ll start by creating a dummy Word document and then going to File | New | Blank Document. Type any text you want into the new document. Select the text and then click Edit | Copy.

Next, create another dummy Word document. In this new dummy document, click Edit | Paste Special. When the Paste Special window appears, click the Paste Link radio button and select Formatted Text. When you click OK, the information you copied from the first dummy document appears.

After that, click Edit | Links. This displays the Links window. Select the first link and click Change Source. When the Change Source window appears, select the troublesome Word document, click Open, and click OK. The document should appear in your second dummy Word document. Then, break the link by clicking Edit | Links | Break Link. Click Yes when Word asks you if you?re sure you want to break the link.

Another way you can recover documents inside of Word is to use Word?s text converter. Click File | Open. When the Open dialog box appears, select the troublesome Word document. But, instead of clicking OK, first select Recover Text From Any File from the Files Of Type drop-down list. This filter will import straight ASCII text from any file, including your damaged Word document. You will lose Word formatting, but you should at least be able to extract most of the text information from the file.

the system restore did not work

I tried the new doc and insert problem doc option it give me a box which says
Microsoft office needs a converter to display this file correctly. This feature is not currently installed. Would you like to install it now?

Leo - just try and attach it to an email again. Sometimes Yahoo plays up with very large files and it doesn't like them.

Do you know how to zip a file?
