according to this CAB files can screw up when your system is over-loaded with junk.

I'm on territory I've not been on before now but if the info on my link is correct, then a system clean up MIGHT work.

Go to Tools, Internet options, Delete cookies, Delete files and delete history.

I have no idea about the download being offered in the link. i just found it on Google, so cannot vouch for it's safety. The about clean up is something we can all do for ourselves without downloading anything!

To zip a file, right-click on it's name and see if you have 'add to winzip' as an option on the drop down menu.

leothelioness · 20/05/2009 17:01

ok just cleared cookies, files and history will not check if it works

Also in Word, go to the Help tab and see if you have a 'Detect & Repair' option. If so, go for it.

leothelioness · 20/05/2009 17:03

its still giving the same CAB error

If the recovered Word document is still damaged.

Microsoft Word tries to automatically recover a damaged document if it detects a problem with the file. You can also "force" Word to try to recover a document when you open it.

  1. On the File menu, click Open.
  2. In the File of type list, click All Files ..
  3. In the Open dialog box, select your document.
  4. Point to the arrow on the Open button, and then click Open and Repair.

Or try using some Microsoft Word document fix tool. These products are often able to repair corrupt Word documents using text found in previously saved copies of the file.

To ZIP a file:-

Right-Click on the file and see if you have the option Win-Zip...if you do, just follow the steps.

Ok - am making dinner, bed time routine and all that. Will check email and see what I can do later.

Doodle2U · 20/05/2009 20:06

Well, as I said on Email Leo - there is no document/essay there. It really is just a one page, blank Word page.

Something else has happened here but I don't know what.

I was trying to think where else you could look. Did it get renamed by accident? Are there copies you saved previously some where (like back-up copies)?

I just don't know what to suggest. Just have one last look through ALL your saved Word documents, to see if it's lurking in there under another name.

I'll bump this thread by posting, so hopefully, the evening crowd might have a suggestion.

RustyBear · 20/05/2009 21:53

If it's only one page and it was previously several, it's possible you've done what a student teacher at school did & opened Word, (which gives you a blank one page document) & then instead of Open, clicked on Save As, navigated to the file & clicked on the file name - which then saved the blank document as their previously saved document.
I'm afraid I don't know how to recover it.

leothelioness · 21/05/2009 00:23

No idea what heppened to it I may have converted it to something unknowingly but I can't find it anywhere.
On the slightly brighter side I have been granted a 1 week extention by my tutor and I still have my my notes which I used so I just have to get it back together again and hope for the best.

Thanks everyone for you help its nice to see so many knid people helping a computer dunce like me.

Can you try to search for the file by looking for some unusual words you used in your essay?
