Oh I wish there was one, it would make MNetting so much easier...

Those in favour say 'aye'.

Hopefully the lovely, lovely people at MNHQ will see this and if we get enough interest we may actually get an application......pleeeaaaasssee!

Aye.

ChairmumMiaow · 30/03/2009 20:08

I've got a windows smartphone. Can we not just have mumsnet mobile to get rid of the graphics etc I have to scroll through when mumsnetting on the move?

cilitbang · 30/03/2009 20:50

Sorry I'm being fick, you are all right yes you can landscape type in mn. My mistake. Rustyb No you can't cut and paste in fb app or twitter app, I was maybe thinking whoever designs the app(if ever) could work out a way to be able to put links in easily. Basically using applications is far more user friendly (and nicer) than the long way round on the browser. if you use apps for other stuff then I'm sure you'll know what I'm talking about. If you are happy without an app then that's fantastic. I'd love one for mn, that's all. But looks like I'll have a bit of a wait.

"When iPhone OS 3.0 arrives this summer, it will introduce over 100 new features, including the ability to:

  • Search your iPhone

  • Cut, copy, and paste
Send photos, contacts, audio files, and location via MMS

  • Read and compose email and text messages in landscape"

  • Some features and services may not be available in all areas.

    • MMS messaging is available only on iPhone 3G; fees may apply. MMS may not be available in all areas.
bramblebooks · 30/03/2009 21:02

Also very excited about os3.0 in June About time the teccy apple guys caught up with what every other phone can do!!! (Iphone is still the best tecchie thing ever tho!)

OneLieIn · 30/03/2009 21:03

Please please please, a MN app would be fab.

nannynick · 30/03/2009 21:04

I don't have an iPhone, but I have a vague understanding of the apps. However, I can't see what a Mumsnet APP would actually do.

I think we need a mobile version of mumsnet first... I use a Nokia running S60, on which I use Opera Mobile to view Mumsnet. It worked fine until a couple of weeks ago, and now seem to insist on starting viewing pages at the bottom of each page, rather than the top.

A Mobile version of Mumsnet would I feel need to strip out some of the navigation elements at the top of the page (replacing those with one link to a page with all the navigation links), removing the Right side content and removing all the bottom of the page content. So leaving us with say a few links so we can navigate around Talk (such as Active, Last 15 Mins, I'm On, All Topics), the actual message posts themselves plus a box at the bottom for us to add a post.

cilitbang · 30/03/2009 21:13

Nannynick you sound like you could design this baby for us!!! Yeah mobile MN like chairmum also mentions would be fantastic too.

Agree with nannynick - a mobile version would be nice to have.

MmeLindt · 01/04/2009 07:45

AYE! To a mobile version, and/or an application for mnetting on the move.

MollieO · 01/04/2009 07:48

Yes please - another Iphone user here.

Gracie123 · 30/10/2009 12:41

BUMP Bump bumpitty bump.

I want an MN app for the iPhone. My stupid fat fingers keep pressing links when I'm trying to zoom in. Very annoying.

BadgersPaws · 30/10/2009 12:46

I think some reformatting of the web pages themselves would go an awful long way to making this a bit more compatible with mobile browsers without needing all the work of an actual iPhone application.

Many other web sites manage to work really rather will on both an iPhone and a desktop browser.

TrickOrTreatersDragOnYourNoose · 30/10/2009 12:48

And now we have one that apparently looks good on an iPhone and shite on a normal computer.

Gracie123 · 30/10/2009 12:54

I'm sorry, was this supposed to look good on an iphone?

It's got far too many links everywhere that load up before you have a chance to say 'No iPhone, I was only trying to scroll!'

MrsFarmer · 01/11/2009 22:07

I know you can do all of the above but I'd still like an app. Have started to collect them, now up to 87. Sad I know but not much else in my life

nymphadora · 01/11/2009 22:30

I have no trouble with it on my iphone but had an awful job using MN on DHs blackberry . I couldn't log in and it kept making me zoom rather than clicking on the links

vvvodka · 01/11/2009 22:32

I NEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEED a mumsnet for iphone.... i cannot read the threads on the safari ....

please..........

ReneRusso · 01/11/2009 22:38

It is a bit unwieldy on Safari. You have to do a lot of scrolling and faffing about just to read one message. I think you need a specific iphone app. You would get rid of all the superfluous information like all the menus and links at the top of the page and make the navigation much simpler. I have some software development experience and would be happy to share my ideas.

Snorbs · 03/11/2009 10:58

Am I the only one reading this thread as "The web browser on my beloved iPhone is crap but rather than ask Apple to fix their crappy software, I want mumsnet to waste a lot of money and dev time developing something special"?

EyeballsintheSky · 03/11/2009 11:09

Yes you are. Safari is a browser, pretty much the same as you get on the computer. Apps take out all the non necessary stuff so that you are left with only what you need, thus making it quicker and easier to navigate. How exactly would Apple or Microsoft or any of the others make a browser that gave you the perfect experience on every single different website?? It'd be impossible, hence the apps. eBay, Amazon etc all have them. And so do lots of other companies, not just the huge ones.

ReneRusso · 03/11/2009 13:17

There is nothing wrong with Safari as such. Its just that mobile phones are much smaller than computer screens. So you need a very concise cut-down version of the website.

Snorbs · 03/11/2009 16:46

If you say so. Fundamentally, MN is a fairly straightforward web site - no clever ajax stuff, not even any flash - it's just text and some links. I have to say that my old Blackberry handled MN reasonably well, and that had a smaller screen than an iPhone.

The whole point of a web browser is to render web sites in a usable and readable manner. The way that the browser writers make sure that they can render standards-compliant websites properly is to conform to those standards. That's what the HTML etc standards are there for. Maybe Amazon et al do go to the trouble of writing iPhone apps but then they've got profit margins, and dev teams, orders of magnitude larger than MN's. Plus they're in the business of making it as easy as possible to give them money.

Yes, pocket-sized computers raise some issues for page layout but its an issue that's long been known about and is already addressable using standards-based approaches such as mobile-friendly stylesheets. To demand a specific, propriety application to run on a specific, proprietary platform to circumvent that platform's limitations just seems to me to be the wrong way of addressing these kinds of issues.

EyeballsintheSky · 03/11/2009 16:55

Safari handles it well, but an app would handle it better. Simple as that. If some snotty kid in his bedroom can write an app for goodness knows what then it's hardly beyond the realms of possibility that MN can if they so desire.

Or should we all write to Steve Jobs? Dear Steve. Your iPhone is fab, truly, but what would make it even better is to roll out a Mumsnet-centric browser. Cheers.

MistergodthisisSal · 03/11/2009 17:09

Yes please for Iphone app from me too.
