Went into his room, he's been holed up in there for hours with his mate today. Very whiffy! Had a quick sniff down his t-shirt and it's definitely him. Does this mean he's growing up then? He's 10 - is this normal?

ta db - slightly mollified that forcing her to wear deo on dance days isn't accompanied by chemical guilt now
and all at the tap of a keyboard.

And with girls it dosnt matter what you buy them they will nick whatever you have on your dressing table and spray it with abundance (including you most expensive perfume) as soon as they discover boys

My ds started using deodorant when he was 10, I bought him some before he started to smell, thought it was better to head it off at the pass and get him into using it every day.

cornsilk · 22/06/2008 19:56

Unfortunately ds doesn't share my concern that he needs a bath and today! I've been trying to explain about hormones to try to explain why he suddenly hums, but as I don't really understand what they are myself he's finding it easy to talk his way out of it. I think he's destined to be a politician. Do they have B.O. as well?

LOL at BetteNoire's post earlier. I took my son to GamesWorkshop today and the smell of boys as you open the door is quite something!

Get him to shower every morning and apply and rinse soap to his feet, arm pits & groin
Get him to wear clean cotton shirt/ t-shirt every day
Make sure he changes (cotton) socks every day
Make sure trainers/ shoes not left in bedroom overnight

get him to open bed room window every morning

If still whiffy, then decide if he needs anti-perspirant to reduce sweating rather than deodorant to mask smells

Am I alone in thinking deodorants on children are not a substitute for washing?

I really do notice the smell of stale sweat and don't like it but am amazed at the number of people on assorted threads who say their kids use deodorants. Sweat is a normal physiological function but covering it up with lots of chemicals can't be a good thing.

When I was in school a friend's mother would not allow her use deodorant but she washed every day and changed her shirt and never smelt nasty while all the whiffy types sprayed themselves with Lynx/ Impulse creatingthe most extraordinary gag-inducing smell.

Dd is 12 and has been using deodorant (Pitrok atm) for a while now. Because the temp is never much less than 28deg here it's difficult to keep BO at bay without some help.

But when it comes to whiffy kids, you ain't smelled nothing until your teenage ds takes off his shoes and releases the odour of two infected in-growing toenails into the air. Dear lord, the room was cleared in less than a nanosecond. And to add insult to injury, it cost over £100 to have his feet treated by a chiropodist!

Califrau, we sometimes see Tom's of Maine here though only toothpaste.

DD1 bathes or showers every day and wears a clean shirt or dress - everything next to the skin goes straight into the wash in the evening. She still stinks after dance class, so I get her to wear deodorant on dance days so that the girls dancing next to her don't complain.
i thought i was being quite a good mummy in the prevention of bullying stakes...
hence asking whether there was a natural alternative rather than using chemical...
none is really not an option if i don't want her coming home in tears saying 'i smell'.

cornsilk · 23/06/2008 12:48

getting some good tips - thanks all! Will try and find some pitrok on line.

Dd has also used Tisserand deodorants. They're a herbally-type version. I like the Pitrok because it doesn't leave any smell, unlike Lynx or those female spray things.

This thread is so funny.

I spent a while with family recently and remember my aunt stressing about cleaning up her 16 yo's bedroom so I could sleep there one night. I slept in it but it really stank, to the point I could barely sleep. She says it's just a boy smell and nothing we can do, why worry? It's true it really is.

chocolatespiders · 23/06/2008 18:08

my 10 year old has just started to wear deodrant she chose a dove one aloe vera and green tea?

she feels very grown up using it and i feel even older
