Are there any alternatives to wireless baby monitors? Or something on a different frequency to wireless internet?

I'e tried a thread in products, no luck. I've also phoned a couple of baby monitor companies who both said monitors and in particular video monitors all run off the same frequency as wireless internet. Which I have got. Can anyone help with a solution or am I destined to continue sleeping on a mattress on DD's bedroom floor forever?

We have BT monitors and wireless internet with no problems

EvelynsDad · 19/03/2008 21:08

First try changing the channel on the wireless router (and the baby monitor) if you can.

If you can't find a combination of channels that don't interfere I would suggest forgetting about the video. We have an audio only monitor that coexists perfectly happily with wireless internet.

If you can't live without the video, how about using a homeplug networking system instead of wireless?

ArrietyClock · 19/03/2008 21:09

Have you looked at the BT ones (not video though)? They've updated them since we bought ours, but I vaguely remember DH talking about frequencies and stuff when we (well, he) chose it. I'm certainly wireless right now (laptop on knee) and baby monitor on and working right next to me.

Of course it's highly probable that I actually have no idea what it is you are asking and have just given a dumb response!

Washersaurus · 19/03/2008 21:11

Oh I missed the video bit .. we don't have one of those just the bog standard type monitor.

We used to have those digisender things though (that send the sky to other tv's in the house) and that used to get interference from the microwave/next door's microwave, the phone, the wireless internet connection etc regardless of the channel we set it to.

MrsBadger · 19/03/2008 21:12

we have cheapo Tomy monitors and wireless internet

no video though

used2bthin · 19/03/2008 21:14

Thanks everyone, I've tried changing the channel on the video monitor but no good. And can't change frequency/channel on the home hub I'm told. The bt ones sound good and Arrietyclock you are on right track, its good to know there are some that don't get interference from wieless, it may be I have to give up on video ones so will look at bt ones frst if so. EvelynSDADHOW WOULD THE HOMEPLUG THING WORK?

Second changing the channels on your router (I think everything is set to 11 or something so changing it in your settings should help). Having said that our tomy one never worked but our tommee tippee one has always worked perfectly.

used2bthin · 19/03/2008 21:16

Oops sorry for capitals! My brother suggested getting a cctv camera that's wired then just disconnecting it in the day when I'm not using it. Sounds very complicated though!

OP posts:
GColdtimer · 19/03/2008 21:17

sorry, x post. Why can't you change the channel on our router?

But yes, some are just better than others I think.

GColdtimer · 19/03/2008 21:18

sorry, your router. Not mine. That wouldn't be good.

ArrietyClock · 19/03/2008 21:18

Yay! Dh would be proud of my technical (!) response.

Have to say, babies are cute when asleep, but not so cute you will want to exchange the TV for a monitor. And to be honest if they are asleep you don't need to see, and if they are screaming you are probably up there dealing with it anyway.

used2bthin · 19/03/2008 21:18

The monitor is 2.4ghz or something does that make sense? After much googling I did find an American website with one that was 900 something to avoid interfernce but I'm not sure I could buy it from here or that it would work.

Twofalls lol, not sure why am just going on what xp told me, is he wrong? Thing is I always get him to do this stuff so would have no idea how to do it myself.

Ah but just realised that it won't work anyway, I tried switching my wireless off but there was still interferance from the neighbours wireless probably as we live in a flat.

Used2bthin, we have one of these cctv style baby monitor jobbies. Basically it's like a tiny black n white webcam with nightvision which you set up near the cot. It has a wire which you run to your TV, and when you want to check on baby you press the av button on your remote a couple of times and there they are. Picture isn't amazing but it's enough to see what they're up to, sound is good, you can hear the slightest murmur. hth

GColdtimer · 19/03/2008 21:30

I am not very technical but I would have thought that you would have a router "settings page" where you could change things like the channel, change the password etc. But if you are in a flat, probably not worth going into as you say, unless you want to ask everyone else to change theirs!

AliciaJohns · 19/03/2008 21:31

Ears?

used2bthin · 19/03/2008 21:31

Thanks James, so do you use it in your room as a normal monitor too? I would need it to work all night though, the sound anyway. Havent actually got a tv in my room but could use my old one would it work with any old tv? Where did you get it from? Sorry for twenty questions!

used2bthin · 19/03/2008 21:33

Twofalls in a crazed moment last night I considered going to all the neighbours asking them to switch theirs off at night. Then realised they probably hate me anyway for being the noisy cow singing "yes my name is iggle piggle" at 7 in the morning!

Grin
used2bthin · 19/03/2008 21:40

Lol Aliciajohns, my room is a bit too far from DD's so can't rely on that annoyingly. I am nervous about not being in the room with her I think too(to justify my obsessing over video monitors!) She has a medical condition which means she needs prompt medical attention if ill so I am sure I'd be too paranoid to sleep if I couldn't see and hear her. But no room for her cot in my room and so have been on a mattress on the floor of hers since we moved here. Was so disappointed when the video monitor didnt work.

I got mine off that seller, off ebay. We only have one tv, our main one in the livingroom, so ours is plugged into that via the AV socket. I'm sure it would work with any modern tv with an av socket. The tv would need to be on for you to use it, because it's like a video onscreen, you couldn't use it just for sound, no. But yeah you could leave it on all night.

used2bthin · 19/03/2008 21:50

Thats interesting JATGB, I'll have to look into that because if I had the tv on with her on the screen and the sound on then surely I'd be woken up and know if she was sick or something?...not sure how modern my old tv is but otherwise could maybe et a cheapy small one for my room. Hmm...

OP posts:
JamesAndTheGiantBanana · 19/03/2008 21:58

The sound is really good, quite sensitive. I'd say it was suitable for what you want to use it for. If it doesn't work with your old tv, stick the old one on freecycle and ask for a small one with an av socket, people are always giving away TV's (especially small ones) as everyone's upgrading to flatscreens now.

Hope it works for you!

used2bthin · 19/03/2008 22:03

That is a very good idea JATGP, just been googling that type of monitor and can't find anywhere else selling them so I'm going to e mail the seller to check if it can be used without being fixed to the wall though as we are in a rented place so can't put anything on the walls. Other than that it looks really promising, thanks for the link it may be just what I've been looking for
