How to attach just one document file to an email, not all files!

mutterphore · 23/02/2023 14:50

I'm trying to send just one file attached to an email which has always been easy and worked fine. Click on documents and click on that one selected file and it attaches to my email.

But, suddenly, when I select one file and it looks as if only that one is attached to an email, then it seems that all my Recently Accessed files get attached as well!

I'm pretty desperate to sort this out today. Have I accidentally clicked something in my Documents folder that makes all recently accessed files get 'stuck together' somehow?

Does anyone know how to stop this happening?

Just to add, before I click on a specific file, a whole stream of recently accessed files is there when I scroll down on the File Name bar. Nothing I do gets rid of these, so they're all attaching along with the specific file I click onto.

Beside the File Name bar, is another bar on the right that says All Files (.) but with no options available except All Files.

So somehow or another, it looks like all recently accessed emails are sticking together in a whole stream. This has never happened before now and I've changed nothing as far as I can tell.

Any advice anyone?

Right click the document, select <copy,> go back to email, right click in message area and select <paste>. Should bow be attached 🤞

JellyBeanFactory · 23/02/2023 16:44

*now

(Although a little bow 🎀 would be nice!)

mutterphore · 23/02/2023 17:19

@JellyBeanFactory Thanks for trying to help. This method only works with a gmail email and not the email account I need which is a webmail account.

For the webmail account, the copied document won't appear in the email when I try copy and paste. The only way to attach a file is to click on Attach a File but when I do this and click on one file only, all the rest on the File name bar get attached too!

Any further thoughts?

What's the file path of the folder and have you tried moving it to your desktop and attaching it from there?

CherrySocks · 23/02/2023 17:31

Copy the doc to a new folder and attach it from that?

Should you be doing attach a doc rather than attach a file?

mutterphore · 23/02/2023 17:35

@ItWillWash thanks for the advice. I've tried copying the document to desktop and then trying to drag the document from desktop to the body of the email and also trying to attach the file in the normal way from desktop. In both cases, all the other files recently accessed come with the single file too!

I really don't know what else to try. Why can't I click on one file only and attach it or copy it somewhere else without all these other files coming too?

When you say you're using webmail do you just mean your accessing via a browser, rather than via an app such as the Gmail app? What email provider is it? Others have made a, good suggestion of moving the document you want to attach to a different location and then browsing to that location when to attach the file.

mutterphore · 23/02/2023 17:37

I've also created a new document and tried to attach this and the same thing happens. Every recently accessed file gets attached to the email too.

You've said "all the rest on the file name bar", what do you mean by that? Are you able to post a screenshot if it wouldn't be outing or breach any confidentiality?

ItWillWash · 23/02/2023 17:39

When does it need sending by?

I work in IT (currently networking but for the first 2 years of my career I was first-line support) and I'm happy to remote on to your PC but I'm not free now until tomorrow afternoon.

Can you show us a screenshot of where it says .allfiles?

mutterphore · 23/02/2023 17:41

@RichardMarxisinnocent , I use Roundcube webmail and access it online.

I've moved the document to a new location but that doesn't work and I've created a new document and that doesn't work.

Every time I go on Attach a File and then File name, when I click the downwards arrow, even before clicking the relevant file into the File Name bar, all those other files remain and are then attached with the relevant file.

My webmail email account doesn't let me copy and past into the main body of the email, only attach files by clicking on Attach a File.

Thanks for trying to help. I can't share a screen shot or anything about my files I'm afraid. Part of my work involves sending numerous attachments via email all day every day so this is going to be a massive ongoing problem if I can't get it resolved.

@RichardMarxisinnocent when I say "All the rest on the file name bar" I mean basically that when I go onto my Documents folder, having clicked Attach a File on my email, at the bottom, the bar File Name comes up and usually I'd then click on the specific file and it then appears on the File Name bar, so I can attach just that document. However, on that File Name Bar there's a small arrow pointing downwards on the right on the bar and when I scroll down, I can see all my recently accessed files there in a list. So all of them are getting attached along with the selected file. I can't find a way to stop this happening.

You could also try dragging and dropping the file directly to your C drive so the file path read C://file.

Open 2 file explorer windows. Navigate to the file in one and other go-to This PC>(local disc) C: and drag the file directly into it.

HelpMeGetThrough · 23/02/2023 17:50

On your webmail client, which I'm assuming is in your browser (as it's well, webmail), do you have something like a paper clip icon? If so, this will more than likely be the attachment button, which will allow you to select the file to attach.

RichardMarxisinnocent · 23/02/2023 17:51

I found this video about Roundcube, with a, section on attachments
So when you have browsed to and selected the single file from the list of your files, the name of your file appears in the file name field at the bottom of the window, but when you click the drop down button at the right of that field, you see all your recent files?

mutterphore · 23/02/2023 17:52

@ItWillWash I'll give this a go when I get time (in a rush now) but going forward, this really won't work as I need to return to the easy and quick previous system. Thanks anyway.

There you go OP, this link has details of attaching a file about halfway down the page.

RichardMarxisinnocent · 23/02/2023 17:54

Silly question, but are all the files definitely actually attaching to the email? It's not that you see them all when you are choosing which to attach, but only one is attaching?

mutterphore · 23/02/2023 17:55

@HelpMeGetThrough thanks but I've already tried that method of attaching a file and it still had the same issue.

@RichardMarxisinnocent , yes that's what happens. It first looks like I've only attached the selected file but when I click the drop down button, I can see all these other files attached and when I send a test email with attachment to myself, the selected attachment still comes along with all the others too.

OP posts:
mutterphore · 23/02/2023 17:56

@RichardMarxisinnocent I thought that might be the case but unfortunately not. If I test send an email. with a single attached document, all others come through too.

Try posting here. It looks like the devs monitor it.

mutterphore · 23/02/2023 18:00

@HelpMeGetThrough thanks also. I tried that method of clicking and dragging the single file onto the large arrow for attachments on the email and when i send it to myself, it still brings with it all the other files as well.

The problem seems to be to do with my documents and how they're all getting grouped /stuck with every other that I've recently accessed, rather than email per se.

It's not a long term solution or an ideal solution, but if it works in gmail, could you send it to yourself and then forward it on?

MehMeh · 23/02/2023 18:03

Try holding down Ctrl and then selecting the one file that you need. It shouldn't be necessary to do this, but it might function as a work around if there's a bug in the system.
