I need to replace one that I have. Good sound is important to me but I don’t know what I’m looking for to make sure it has good sound? The Tv I’m replacing I went into store to get advice and walked out with a sound bar which was crap. There are some sales so max I want to spend is £500. Current one is 44 inches which is small in my front room plus my eye sight isn’t the best! Can anyone help me work out what I’m looking for please so I don’t make another mistake?

You need to work out what size you want first. Depends how far away you are from it. If you Google you’ll find a chart telling you what size to get.

Something that may narrow it down, my tv unit is 42 inches wide…. So will have to be mindful of the feet of the tv

I’m going to move the room around, and the sofas are going to be 3-4m away from the TV

You might find some models with a central bar stand which may allow you to go wider than the unit. I’ll have to do this when I upgrade as I also need a bigger tv. Think mine is 37” and I cant see subtitles.

Go to richer sounds if you have one near enough. They repaired our TV (twice) when it broke after five years, both times something simple but really good customer service in comparison to other appliances we've had.

CMSnightmare · 30/12/2021 19:57

@CovidCorvid current LG tv has a sort of semi circle bar which I need rather than 2 legs either end. Googling suggests I need a 79 inch tv Shock I have a 44 inch one currently, 79 is huge!

You can buy a stand that will sit centrally (swivel and tilt) that fits to the vesa mounts on the tv so I would worry less about the feet on the tv you want.

They can be as cheap as £25 on Amazon.

Example stand

BONTEC Swivel Table Top TV Stand for 26-55 inch LED OLED LCD Plasma Flat Curved Screens Height Adjustable Glass Base Max. VESA 400x400mm up to 45KG https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07MM4539M/ref=cmswwrcppapiglttfabcYWW0C5VYGEWWEEFDCY3P

@greenalltheway wow ok thanks that helps although I have never heard of those? Are you able to show me a link? Do you take the feet off the tv then?

It looks like I need 55 or 65 inch i think?

OP posts:
greenalltheway · 30/12/2021 20:07

Yep just take the feet off, it's like using the wall mount bit on the tv. Ive just done this with my sons new tv 43 inch

Height adjustable too so if you need space underneath it's great!

MackenCheese · 30/12/2021 20:20

I've just upgraded from a 32" TV to a 55". I don't know if my eyes are going, but I just wasn't seeing details on the old screen. The new one (LG) has a central stand so that I haven't got to worry about little legs teetering on the edge of the cabinet. I thought it was enormous when it arrived on Christmas eve (sneaky present to kids-and myself!!). Getting used to it now 😂

CMSnightmare · 30/12/2021 20:37

@MackenCheese that’s a big upgrade! This one felt huge when I went from a 32, the 32 is in my bedroom and I can not see the TV guide on itGrin

Sorry @greenalltheway I missed your link thanks!

So can anyone help with spec? What makes a good/bad tv in terms of the picture quality and the sound?

OP posts:
MackenCheese · 30/12/2021 21:01

I know, it's a big leap in size!! I just didn't want to get the 48" and regret it. The sound on it is excellent, so it doesn't need a sound bar either.

CMSnightmare · 30/12/2021 21:34

I was just looking at a Philips one on ao.com and one review said it didn’t support Disney plus… nothing in the spec would suggest it doesn’t? So that is what I mean by I don’t want to buy the wrong one!

It needs to be compatible with sky, Netflix, prime, Disney plus. Is of iPlayer a bonus but not essential.

I've replaced my lg with a Samsung, the lg made everything look purple.

gamerchick · 30/12/2021 21:47

The better the telly the more shit the sound imo. Sound bars are handy or surround sound.

I'd kill for an OLED. They are the orgasm of tellys imo Grin

I really wouldn’t worry about apps, etc. At some point the brand will, stop updating that model of tv and any apps will stop working. Your best bet is focus on the picture and sound quality and then just buy a firestick or similar to get all the apps.
gamerchick · 30/12/2021 21:49

Might be a bit of an ask to get a decent 55inch for 500 quid like. Good luck though.

The problem with LGs going purple is a known issue but very fixable, ours was sorted out in a couple of days under warranty
userxx · 30/12/2021 22:23

@SilverRingahBells Mine was about 5 years old so out of warranty.

MackenCheese · 30/12/2021 22:56

@Gamerchick, very much so... I'm loving my OLED Grin
