Ds really wants one for Christmas but I can’t afford the likes of the drawing the has seen on the iPad. I don’t want to spend a lot of money in case it is just a fad. Can anyone recommend one please as I have no idea what makes a good one or what it needs to have please??

Tia

I don't know what you consider a reasonable price, but Currys has a Samsung S6 Lite for £299, which has a pen with it.

Devoilmum · 29/11/2020 10:41

I got my dd this one from amazon

XP-PEN Star03 Drawing Tablet 12 inch with 8 Hot Keys, Battery-free Graphic Tablet Pens 10x6" Work area for Art Design Support Windows 10/8/7 & Mac OS (Star03 Bla

There was a Christmas thread talking about them some time ago and this was highly recommended.

WouldBeGood · 29/11/2020 10:46

Another recommendation for XP pen.

Good customer support too - helped very efficiently when a glitch happened. And it’s very good, ds does amazing stuff on it

Tryingtokeepsafe · 30/11/2020 16:50

Sorry I didn’t think any one would reply! Sorry I should have specified money, £300 far too much, I was hoping under £100.

Thanks will look at that other one, anyone have the link to that thread at all @Devoilmum?

@WouldBeGood what kind of stuff can you do? He has asked for a while but I don’t know much about them? That price looks great on amazon though! Anything I need to know? Can I just plug in and go, don’t need to pay for any subscription or apps?

If he has a laptop or desktop he can get a Wacom tablet for under £100. Its used by the professionals and is fantastic. You do need to sit in front of a screen though, not something you can use on the sofa.

WouldBeGood · 30/11/2020 18:46

You plug it into a laptop of desk top and you can do layers of colour, shading etc. My boy is into anime and it’s amazing. You “draw” on the tablet and it appears on your laptop.

You don’t need an app or other software, just what comes with it.

DS had a wacoam and it wasn’t as good. With the XP pen one you can see it on both screens. This is an example of what he’s done.

Wow that’s good. Ds also into anime, are you able to show me a link on Amazon @WouldBeGood?

Can’t manage to link but this is it

Thanks @WouldBeGood how come that one is so much more than the one @Devoilmum recommended? I’m clueless with technology as you can tell! The other one I found for about £40 on amazon but can’t get delivered soon enough... I’ll try to copy and paste and keep looking!

WouldBeGood · 30/11/2020 21:22

Some of them you can’t see your drawing on the tablet, only on the linked screen, so that’s the main difference. Like I say, DS had the wacoam one first and upgraded when we knew he’d use it, so you could do that?

Tryingtokeepsafe · 01/12/2020 08:29

@WouldBeGood yes I would rather start off on the cheaper end in case it is a fad. I see there are various wacoam ones on curreys, out of the few that are around the £50 ones does it matter which I get?

OP posts:
WouldBeGood · 01/12/2020 09:33

I don’t think it will matter. Just check it’s compatible with the laptop as some don't work with Chromebooks, for example.

Hope he loves it!

goldenharvest · 01/12/2020 09:38

Wacom lower end ones are all the same tablet, I just think you get a different software to use with it? Was when I bought mine years ago.

Tryingtokeepsafe · 02/12/2020 06:40

Do none of these drawing tablets work on their own?? So you can’t use it without a laptop?

WouldBeGood · 02/12/2020 07:54

No, you need a laptop or desktop too

CandyLeBonBon · 02/12/2020 08:01

The huawei Mediapad is pretty good

CandyLeBonBon · 02/12/2020 08:02

You can buy the stylus too which is brilliant - I bought one for my daughter and it's perfect.

www.amazon.co.uk/Wacom-Intuos-Draw-Tablet-White/dp/B013ATUR46?tag=mumsnetforu03-21

This is the entry level tablet from Wacom that we have in our house. Again it needs to be plugged into a pc or laptop but for this price bracket I don’t think you’ll find one that doesn’t need to be.

One of the galaxy tablets used to be good for drawing (without a pc) but I think they’re in the £400 price bracket

Spirael · 02/12/2020 08:38

You could get a laptop with a touch screen and stylus (i.e. ASUS Vivobook - £500), or you could get a regular tablet with a stylus (i.e. Samsung Note - £360). If it's just going to be for doodling or very simple pictures then those will be fine - and you get the added bonus of then having a laptop or tablet that can do other functions too.

The other option is to get a drawing tablet, which you will need a computer or laptop to plug it into. Think of it as an input device, just like a mouse or keyboard, but with a pen instead.

It will be a struggle to do any significant digital art on a bottom end PC/Laptop, but for amateur artists it doesn't need to be a top-of-the-range gaming rig either! A mid-level machine will be perfectly adequate.

Drawing tablets come in two main flavours: with screen and without screen. The former are more expensive, but are easier to use as you don't have a disconnect between your hand and your eye.

The ones without a screen mean you draw without looking at your hand - which takes a while to get used to. However, that's how most people start out because the cost difference is massive.

You can pick up a small Wacom Intuos (no screen) for around £100. A small Wacom One (screen) on the other hand is closer to £350. Wacom is the big player in the drawing tablet world.

One thing to be wary of is that the pen will likely have replaceable nibs, as these are basically just a thin strip of plastic that wear down with use, due to the friction. If you go for a non-mainstream brand, then getting replacement parts could be a nightmare.

If you decide to go down the path of getting a drawing tablet with a screen, and especially if you go for a cheaper variant, consider whether you might want to get a screen protector. If it's needed, then be ready to replace the screen protector frequently as it'll get scratched with use. Again, these can be hard to source with non-mainstream brands.

You will also need some art software to really get the most of out a drawing tablet. Sometimes tablets come with a trial of some software.

There is free software out there (GIMP, etc) but you get what you pay for... At the opposite end of the scale, Photoshop is the professional level and eye wateringly expensive. I'd suggest looking at something like Clip Studio Paint (£40 - one off payment) as a good half-way house, which you can trial first.

mollscroll · 02/12/2020 08:42

I wasn’t looking for some sort of drawing tech that isn’t internet enabled and doesn’t need a pc or laptop for my phone addicted dd. Any ideas ?

PinkPlantCase · 02/12/2020 10:32

@mollscroll pen and paper? 😂 sorry couldn’t resist.

You could always encourage her to draw and then get a scanner so she can scan I and edit her art. But the majority is done not on a device.
