I need something for dc for school for September but needs to be light weight and smallish like a chrome book but can’t be an actual chrome book as not compatible with school. Don’t want to spend too much money and need to be able to download apps so for example he needs a word to text type app he can use?

@Wonderingwhyme

Lenovo Ideapad 710s laptop. It is the A4 paper size and very light. While it might not be available, maybe you can look at the new range.

I think what you're talking about is called a Netbook. They are small and don't have CD/DVD drives, just USB slots.

I may be hopelessly out of date as I stopped working in a computer shop in 2013! That's what we called the mini ones then.

BertieBotts · 05/08/2020 07:34

Be carful, because smaller and cheaper laptops sometimes scrimp on things like ram.

I would ask to try it out in whatever store you visit and see if you can go to Google images, search for a picture and then copy paste it into a program like Word or Google docs. If it can do this without lagging horribly it should be able to cope with school work.

Wonderingwhyme · 05/08/2020 09:38

Trouble is I can’t get to the shops at the moment. Curry’s etc are over half hour away and I don’t really want to take dc in the shops as they are still vulnerable due to their health ...

The Lenovo are too expensive for me. Need to keep as low As possible.

Any suggestions?

I also had Asus Transformer (laptop with detachable keyboard), however it is heavier (0.5kg I think) than Lenovo and lasted less. You can purchase older ones on Ebay for £139 (used).

For small laptops like Lenovo (new) I would look at refurbished ones with store warranty. They cost starting £239, however in my experience last longer (my current Lenovo is over 3 years old and still going strong despite heavy usage).

I have had Toshiba, Asus, Acer, Samsung and Lenovo so far. I would pick Lenovo again for the weight, capabilities and durability.

It is difficult to suggest something without knowing what specifications you are looking for exactly. And what is your budget...

Wonderingwhyme · 06/08/2020 07:31

I don’t have a clue about spec, school haven’t been much use other than get a windows laptop and it needs to be light/small as he has to carry it around. All I know is not chrome book as school doesn’t use google classroom..... I’d really like to not spend more than £300 but £500 max...

Look for laptops with a solid state drive (ssd) as these are lighter and thinner. There's no cd/dvd slot on them so there's also no moving parts inside making them much easier to carry around. Laptops Direct or similar sites offer refurbished ssd laptops for under £200 - I've no idea of the specs but they'd be the right size and price.

HP something like this will do the job, no need to spend a fortune. Similar models got my two through school and sixth form.

Wonderingwhyme · 06/08/2020 10:59

Thanks both. Is the 14 inch mean the width of it? If so that is only about half an inch narrower than the normal laptops we have at home? So doesn’t that mean it isn’t that small?

OP posts:
Wonderingwhyme · 06/08/2020 11:05

Ok so that is one inch shorter in depth and one inch narrower than home laptops. Argos won’t deliver and none of the stores have it either!!!

Is this any good...

Have a look on Dell website. Much cheaper than Currys and home delivery 👍

Or is the photo attached the same one you have linked @homemadecommunistrussia?

Contacted dell and they showed me one just under £500 but is still quite big and when they showed me 13 inch it was £800!!!

Anyone else help me please?

KittCat · 08/08/2020 13:45

We got a laptop from Dell for £199.

Wonderingwhyme · 08/08/2020 13:49

I don’t mind where it comes from, I just don’t know what I ‘need’ other than a small one!

OP posts:
GinisLife · 09/08/2020 07:44

I paid around £500 for a Dell and it's really light - much lighter than my previous HP. Never had a bad Dell (this is my 4th). My HP isn't great - keeps crashing when turned on until it sorts itself out

Wonderingwhyme · 09/08/2020 09:12

Thanks both. @LaughingDonkey that HP one is one I found on amazon, but when I went on an online chat with curreys they only recommended two laptops and this one wasn’t one of them. Why do you think that was?

@GinisLife I’ve only had dell gaming laptops so I don’t have anything to compare? (Not me gaming as I’m clueless!)

Have a good look around for discount codes, I got 10% of my Lenovo Yogi by signing up for the newsletter. Code came through in about 40 minutes.

LaughingDonkey · 09/08/2020 10:55

@Wonderingwhyme

I assume they recommended laptops that were around £400-£600 mark? Which ones they have recommended?

For school you do not need massive memory, or fast CPU - this model is quite slow and might overheat every few hours if there's heavy usage. HP Stream is a basic laptop, something one would use for few hours a day for school work for example. Do not buy from Amazon.

Like I said before I would always go for Lenovo Ideapad. Mine is 3 years old and only now I have started having battery issues (normally battery lifespan is about 2 years). And it is heavily used including gaming. I value Lenovo above all the other laptops, but that is my personal opinion and choice.

Wonderingwhyme · 09/08/2020 12:52

@LaughingDonkey I’ve attached screen shots of what they recommended...

Ideally he needs the smallest possible. The 14 inch is quite big really for him to carry around class to class (he has SN) hence why I need the smallest possible. I wanted to just get him a chrome book as my other dc use them at their school and I know my way round them a bit! Plus they do the 11inch. But dc school said chrome book isn’t compatible due to the google classroom ...

What about the Lenovo ideapad flex 11 3?
