@KatyMac try Squarespace. Very easy to build your site and a good choice of templates. I’m a graphic designer with mainly print design experience but find Squarespace very easy to use and to customise.

KatyMac · 27/08/2019 21:29

But quite expensive - I've heard reviews that they are good

I keep spending money on this launch and I have no idea if I will sell anything!

I think it works out at £14 a month which you can pay monthly rather than annually so you can cancel at any time. I fully appreciate that might be a lot though in the initial stages.

KatyMac · 27/08/2019 21:34

GoDaddy and Wix are £3/4 a month

That is a huge difference

My domain name is £12 for 2 years....which I can just afford!!

What will you be selling? Would a site like Etsy or Big Cartel be better? With BC you used to be able to advertise 5 listings for free and have your own online shop away from the ‘marketplace’ type websites.

KatyMac · 27/08/2019 21:36

Etsy take 35% of selling price (apparently)

Facebook is free Hmm

Handmade clothing made from recycled household fabrics

I may just to FB until I sell something and maybe launch a website as Christmas approaches

OP posts:
Someaddedsugar · 27/08/2019 21:37

It seems the pricing has changed but for around £8 a month you get fully supported listings with up to 25 unique listings on your own website with a fully tracked order system so you can properly track your ROI and analytics.

KatyMac · 27/08/2019 21:38

GoDaddy do a business for £7 a month - so maybe do that at the start of Nov if I have sold a few items

OP posts:
Someaddedsugar · 27/08/2019 21:38

That sounds really interesting, and I imagine very popular given the single use messaging. Etsy is probably more like 10% fees - definitely not 35%.

KatyMac · 27/08/2019 21:40

That is very american - I can't sell to america (at least I dont think I can - I dont know thier rules, I imagine postage will be high and then there are customes/excise to deal with)

OP posts:
KatyMac · 27/08/2019 21:44

I had worked eBay & Etsy out at about 15%

Folksey is about 9%

But then I saw a thing saying it was higher (hang on I'll look)

Oh that decimal point - menopause has really stuffed up my brain!!

I think you can send clothing goods to USA up to $200 without custom charges, but double check online.
Etsy is a lot less than you said. Well worth trying. Just factor their fee into your price. They have a huge audience. I sold several lots of ceramics on there effortlessly. 80% were USA buyers and willing to pay Royal Mail's tracked & signed cost.

KatyMac · 27/08/2019 21:50

So plan of actions

  1. sell on FB

  2. if I sell 10 things by end of October start either Etsy or own website

  3. I need to set up a new paypal for business

  4. I need to sort out labels

  5. I think I will make an A4 pdf page about each garment to go on fb

  6. not panic

I know someone who advertises items on FB saying they will be on ebay for xyz days, and they get big responses - and big sales too. They do have a big following on FB though.

ButDoYouAvocado · 27/08/2019 22:10

I use GoDaddy. It looks great and I'm no programmer. It's a simple template you just fill in.

KatyMac · 27/08/2019 22:16

I have number on FB but I don't know what the mean

Over the last 28 days post reach over 9000, post engagements 2300, but I only have 160 page likes

My Instagram is pitiful but I move from 24 followers to 63 followers in 4 days

OP posts:
KatyMac · 27/08/2019 22:17

Thanks ButDoYouAvocado I am leaning towards GoDaddy

Are you hash tagging like mad on Instagram?
Send me a PM and I'll have a look.

KatyMac · 27/08/2019 22:31

Umm no - not really I don't understand the difference between a # and an @ really. sorry

OP posts:
stayathomegardener · 27/08/2019 22:51

The @KatyMac tags an Instagram user exactly like this.

The # allows people to find you in searches, so for example #handmadeclothing has 250k tags. Think laterally for hashtags and perhaps search them yourself to find the most popular ones. Remember don't leave gaps #handmadeclothing not #hand made clothing.
If you have a business Instagram you can see all your statistics which is helpful in showing your reach and engagement.
You can also pay to sponsor your posts to reach more users.

KatyMac · 27/08/2019 22:59

How do I get a business account? Shoudl I have one? Do I need to pay?

I have been told when I am ready to advertise Instagram would be better than FB
(not sure why)

Thanks for the help

OP posts:
KatyMac · 27/08/2019 23:07

this suggests it's a positive thing & I found out how
