Why is my wireless router all lit up even with the computers off?

I have a Netgear router. I say wireless, but it has three wires so I'm probably using the wrong lingo. It was installed by BIL so that the kids could go online on their computer without me having to bother with another ADSL thingy.

There's no on/off switch on said router and I don't like going to bed at night and leaving something lighted up.

What should I do?

switch it off at the wall. but be aware that components wear out more quickly if they experience on/off surges, so there is a case for leaving them on.

Mine has some lights on when computer is off - think it's power light and something else. Just unplug it. Mine has an on/off button on the back, next to the power cable which I only found out the other day!

Quootie!!!

where've you bin?

GRUMPYGIRL · 20/03/2007 14:37

Broadband is designed to be 'always on' thats why there is no on off swich on the router. Mine is the same - it is annoying but I leave it on - I agree with aitch its not designed to be switched off. Goes against the grain as Im always wingeing about standby!

AitchYouBerk · 20/03/2007 14:39

me too, grumpy i don't leave anything else on standby, just the router.

Spidermama · 20/03/2007 14:41

pmsl

Thanks Aitch - been just living in the "lovely" RL. Come to my senses now though! xXx

GRUMPYGIRL · 20/03/2007 14:58

I keep trying the RL thing - some days im determined NOT to log on and the computer sits in the corner beckoning to me LOL

HappyDaddy · 20/03/2007 14:59

Just unplug it, it wont break.

AitchYouBerk · 20/03/2007 15:26

pmsl at the manly advice. it's not true but, y'know, he is a man...

HappyDaddy · 20/03/2007 15:28

Aitch, I work in IT, so there.

AitchYouBerk · 20/03/2007 15:31

well that explains it. IT people always counsel 'switching it off and on again'.

HappyDaddy · 20/03/2007 15:32

That's cos it usually rectifies whatever silly thing you've just done...

HappyDaddy · 20/03/2007 15:36

"Hello, Aitch, what have you done now?"

AitchYouBerk · 20/03/2007 15:37

i need you to come up here and fix it.

HappyDaddy · 20/03/2007 15:39

AitchYouBerk · 20/03/2007 15:54

computer's still not working... has the geek got lost?

CarGirl · 20/03/2007 15:57

our wireless box thingy (router I think - Belkin £50 thingy) gets really really hot so we switch it off at the wall when not in use mainly overnight????? Are they meant to get relly hot?

HappyDaddy · 20/03/2007 16:01

Warm yes, not really hot.

Aitch, you didn't tell me what was wrong. It was fine when I saw it. Where's my tea?

AitchYouBerk · 20/03/2007 17:02

i don't know what's wrong, HD. i'm just a woman...

HappyDaddy · 20/03/2007 17:09

Typical, vague description and lets me go thirsty. I don't know...

DominiConnor · 20/03/2007 17:10

A router really ought not to get hot. A decent test for any computer gear is simply to touch it (not on the mains side of your power supply).
If you can't keep your finger there, then something is wrong.
Try turning it on it's side, masking sure the air vents aren't obstructed.
