I don't use Google so Chrome is out.

Internet Explorer - isn't that meant to be bad for viruses?

Firefox.

Are there any others??

Safari.

nappyaddict · 08/12/2013 08:47

What's better then - Firefox, Safari or Explorer?

OP posts:
nappyaddict · 08/12/2013 08:50

Or Opera?

My laptop runs on Windows 7 Home Premium if that makes a difference.

My preference is Safari but I actually use Chrome myself.
I avoid IE at all costs!

nannynick · 08/12/2013 21:57

If you don't wish to use Chrome, then I say use FireFox.

You could use Lunascape. It can access three rendering engines, the ones used by IE, FireFox [Gecko] and Safari [Webkit].

When downloading any browser, do a Custom install so that you can choose which Toolbars/Helpers to have and not have installed.

We use Firefox and Chrome, on a Linux 'desktop' computer our 30yr old DS assembled for us.

I prefer Firefox and find some aspects easier than with Chrome.

Does one HAVE to use Google to use Chrome?

nappyaddict · 11/12/2013 11:59

I think one has to use Google on Opera too don't they?

My preference is for Firefox, for a couple of reasons: first, Chrome is a 300 ishMB download, and Chrome also stores your search details etc, with it being a Google product, so it makes search engines like Startpage and DuckDuckGo worthless.

somewheresomehow · 19/12/2013 17:08

I only use firefox, internet explorer kept crashing and was so feckin slow it took forever to load anything

flatpackhamster · 19/12/2013 18:21

IE10 and IE11 are still favoured targets for virus writers.

Chrome feeds back all your personal information to Google for !Profit!

Safari is fine if you like that sort of thing, but I prefer Firefox.

Firefox is also the only browser which refuses to feed your browsing history and whatnot back to MI6 and the NSA.

PedroYoniLikesCrisps · 21/12/2013 17:21

Not sure I understand why you can't use Chrome. You don't have to use Google as your search engine in Chrome and it's leagues ahead of the other browsers.

Dwerf · 21/12/2013 17:27

I used to love Opera. Then the bastards "updated" it and took off the bookmarks feature. Really Opera, really? So now I use firefox. I hate chrome with a passion.

1sassylassy · 21/12/2013 17:35

Opera has speed dial though,I gave it a whirl a few months ago and have never gone back, find it so much quicker to use speed dial than a list of bookmarks.

Dwerf · 21/12/2013 17:38

I don't just have bookmarks on my bar, I have folders of bookmarks. I love my bookmarks. I never used speed dial even when I had a bookmark bar.

I hate chrome with a passion

Why?

Dwerf · 21/12/2013 17:49

I don't know, I just do. When it first cam out and I used it, it seemed to be full of ads. And seemed slower than either Opera or Firefox. And recently when I've opened it, it's been so unresponsive, not even the home page loaded.

It may just hate me Grin

lljkk · 21/12/2013 17:50

IE is the only one that integrates widely & easily with other software ime. I'm using Safari on home laptop as I type this, but for work, IE all the way.

PedroYoniLikesCrisps · 21/12/2013 18:10

That's strange to hear. I've found it to be so much faster than anything else and it's such a clean interface too. No stupid toolbars popping up every time you download something. Before Chrome existed I used Firefox and I could barely see the Internet through all the add ons. It was horrendous. Chrome is like a breath of fresh air.

DoctorTwoTurtleDoves · 21/12/2013 18:21

I don't like Chrome because it's a Google product and they track and keep all your data indefinitely. I use Firefox as a browser and Startpage as search engine.

PedroYoniLikesCrisps · 21/12/2013 18:26

Clearly some conspiracy issues here. If you're worried about companies holding your personal data you'd best get off the Internet. Everything you do is tracked and stored. It's extremely valuable to other companies. Often it works to your advantage because your digital world is moulded around you.

Dwerf · 21/12/2013 18:41

pedro this is an old, abused laptop, there's probably something on here clashing with it, or fragging it up. I'm hoping ds is going to sort it for me over the next couple of weeks. I may give it another go if only for the netflix hack so I can watch the american netflix

PedroYoniLikesCrisps · 21/12/2013 18:43

Lol fair enough! Just seemed like an unusual view :)

It's true, I tell you! I'm the most interesting person in the world, everyone wants to read about the colour of the toothbrush I just ordered from Amazon; Time magazine are constantly banging on my door for an interview. I have to hide from the blinding limelight, damnit!
