Outlook or Outlook Express?

What exactly happens? Do you get any error messages?

KatyMac · 13/07/2010 09:22

Cannot start Microsoft Office Outlook. Cannot open the outlook window

Outlook 2007

OP posts:
BadgersPaws · 13/07/2010 09:36

OK try this....

Bring up a command prompt (Start/Programs/Accessories/Command Prompt on Windows XP) and enter:

outlook.exe /resetnavpane

If you get something saying that outlook.exe isn't recognised then find the Outlook Icon on your desktop and right click it, move to the Shortcut tab and look for the Target field.

You then want to change the command prompt to be in that folder that Outlook.exe is.

So I would enter two separate commands

c:
cd C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office12\

and then try the outlook.exe command given above again.

BadgersPaws · 13/07/2010 09:37

slaps head....

Once you've worked out where Outlook .exe is you could just enter one command, this would look something like:

C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office12\outlook.exe /resetnavpane

That's a bit easier...

KatyMac · 13/07/2010 09:55

Sorry I am being slow

I have:

C:\Documents and settings\Katymac>

What do I type there?

OP posts:
BadgersPaws · 13/07/2010 10:03

You need to find out where Outlook is.

On your desktop find the Icon for Outlook and right click it, move to the Shortcut tab and look for the Target field.

Mine says "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office12\outlook.exe".

In the Command prompt window enter:

/resetnavpane

For example I would enter:
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office12\outlook.exe /resetnavpane

BadgersPaws · 13/07/2010 10:05

Curses Windows....

I actually have to enter :

"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office12\outlook.exe" /resetnavpane

There's quotes around the outlook bit as there are spaces in it.

KatyMac · 13/07/2010 10:19

You actually type the "?

Still working on finding it tbh when I right click

OP posts:
BadgersPaws · 13/07/2010 10:22

Yup you will need the quotes.

The right click should bring up a window with a number of tabs on it. You want the second one, "Shortcut".

KatyMac · 13/07/2010 10:25

In Properties then account settings I have

c:\documents and Settings\Katymac\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook

Do you think that's it?

OP posts:
KatyMac · 13/07/2010 10:28

Nah

Not recognised as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file

OP posts:
KatyMac · 13/07/2010 10:28

c:\documents and Settings\Katymac this bit is in the black box

DO I add the rest?

OP posts:
BadgersPaws · 13/07/2010 10:31

I doubt very much that that's it, try entering "c:\documents and Settings\Katymac\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook\Outlook.exe" into the command prompt and I'm guessing it won't work.

You're trying to find out where Outlook.exe actually is....

Which version of Windows are you on?

Are you right clicking on the icon on your desktop?

Give a go to entering the following, complete with quotes, into the command prompt:
"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office12\outlook.exe"

Does Outlook try to open?

KatyMac · 13/07/2010 10:34

"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office12\outlook.exe" - Cannot find the path

XP

Right click the icon & I get
Read Email
Properties
Scan
Send to
Cut
Copy
Create shortcut
Delete
Rename

OP posts:
BadgersPaws · 13/07/2010 10:49

Right click "Properties" and what happens?

You can also try and find Outlook.exe using Windows Explorer. It is usually somewhere within c:\program files\microsoft office.

You can also try Windows Search.

Start/Search for Files or Folders
Select "All Files and folders"
Enter Outlook.exe as the file name
Click Search

You're looking for the value under "In Folder"

BadgersPaws · 13/07/2010 10:54

OK here's a way that should work no matter how your desktop is set up....

Go to the command prompt and enter the following three commands pressing return after each one

c:
cd /
dir outlook.exe /s

The third command will take a while, it should come back with something looking like...

C:\Program Files>dir outlook.exe /s
Volume in drive C has no label.
Volume Serial Number is E095-B5AC

Directory of C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office12

17/08/2009 23:54 12,957,536 OUTLOOK.EXE
1 File(s) 12,957,536 bytes

It's the Directory part that you're interested in.....

When you can type into the window again enter the following

\Outlook.exe
So as said I would enter:
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office12\Outlook.exe

Does Outlook try to open?

BadgersPaws · 13/07/2010 10:54

Sorry, and as before put quotes around the final bit, so I would enter

"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office12\Outlook.exe"

KatyMac · 13/07/2010 11:22

Did

c:
cd /
dir outlook.exe /s

got Volume in drive C has no label.
Volume serial number is C418-F5B1
File not found

OP posts:
BadgersPaws · 13/07/2010 11:25

Blimey.....

Try changing the first command to d: and then doing it again.

Can you find Outlook using Windows Explorer?

KatyMac · 13/07/2010 11:28

D:

The devise is not ready

Do I need to take it to the shop?

OP posts:
KatyMac · 13/07/2010 11:30

C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office12

I think?

OP posts:
BadgersPaws · 13/07/2010 11:38

No you shouldn't need to take it to the shop, we just need to find out where the file is.

Go to the command window and type in the following two commands
cd C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office12
dir out.exe

What happens?

KatyMac · 13/07/2010 11:49

Typed

cd C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office12

The systems cannot find the path specified

OP posts:
BadgersPaws · 13/07/2010 11:57

Try
cd "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office12"

and then:
dir XoutX.exe

Where X is the star character, I can't type it here as it replaces it and makes out look bold.
