Miniature Magnolia Tree...... Does such a thing exist?!

I love love love magnolia trees and I am full of if anyone has one!

I have a spot in my garden coming up that would suit a magnolia I think but not a full height one. Is there such a thing as a miniature that grows no taller than ideally 6/7ft. I know that they do not like pruning ( I think I know!)

thank you x

Magnolia stellata are slow growing and remain small for quite a long time. The bigger ones are also quite slow to grow but also very slow to flower in my experience.

RatherBeOnThePiste · 16/04/2010 18:56

Would you think then a small version would be better? I appreciate your feedback. I may mooch round the garden centre and see what I can find. Magnolias seem to do well in our gardens round here. So fingers crossed. Thanks.

Magnolia stellata would be your best bet yes, they flower from a fairly early age, though they are slow growing so if you can find a good size one its more likely to flower soon.

Elibean · 17/04/2010 19:34

And they smell nice too, I think?

Am also hankering after a small magnolia to break up a big rectangular lawn...

RatherBeOnThePiste · 18/04/2010 08:04

Thank you I am looking forward to getting the old thing out and replacing it with my new lovely magnolia stellata!
Can't wait

i have a stellata and is just flowering now. It is beautiful, and still small after 5 years.

RatherBeOnThePiste · 19/04/2010 19:52

How tall is it?

Oh, maybe this is what I have (was already in the garden when we bought the house). It's just coming into flower now. I thought it was just miserable because I'm treating it badly.

RatherBeOnThePiste · 19/04/2010 19:56

Go and speak encouragingly to it policywonk!
It's nice to be nice.
And if you don't, I will sneak over and knick it

I will, I will. I will cradle it's eight (count 'em) blossoms and promise not to prune it so viciously next summer

RatherBeOnThePiste · 19/04/2010 20:04

Maybe you should start by apologising?

OP posts:
Compost · 19/04/2010 20:05

Mine is under 4 ft.

RatherBeOnThePiste · 19/04/2010 20:10

How big was it when you got it 5 years ago? I am quite excited about this!

OP posts:
policywonk · 19/04/2010 20:10

God I hate apologising. Could I make it a cup of tea instead?

Mine is slightly taller than a seven-year-old and is at least four years old.

Compost · 19/04/2010 20:11

well i dont think it was much smaller than it is now . It is incredibly slow growing, so if you want a bigger one than that and not have the wait, then buy it at prettuy much the size you want it.

RatherBeOnThePiste · 19/04/2010 20:13

Tea would be a start

Am of to the garden centre on Wednesday, but I am finking these gorgeous things don't come cheap.

Honestly, if you're anywhere near Surrey and you fancy digging mine up, you're welcome. I'd rather have some raspberry canes.

RatherBeOnThePiste · 19/04/2010 20:18

I hope it didn't hear that - it will really sulk now, and all 8 of its blooms will droop.

How can you not love it?!

policywonk · 19/04/2010 20:29

Believe me, it's sulking already

You know how you have a plant, and it doesn't thrive, and you end up resenting it? That's where I am with my magnolia. Also, it's crammed up against a fence in a spatchcock stylee and it looks stupid. (I like them usually, honest.)

RatherBeOnThePiste · 19/04/2010 20:47

Pannacotta - that is lovely for sure

mrstimlovejoy - we have a big cherry tree in our front garden and it is just about to have massive heavy pink blossom that is divine... until it drops off!

Policy - does you tree look like this?
