Is this a fair price for tree stump removal?

It is quite embedded and has been there for decades. I want to remove it so I can plant a row of hedges. I’ve been quoted £225 which seems steep. I’m in a posh part of the south east.

Sounds like a bargain!

Lollygaggle · 06/08/2026 15:31

£150 north of Watford Gap.

Why do you say that?

Normally you’d add an extra 0 on any price for stump removal!!

Tryingtokeepgoing · 06/08/2026 16:41

Given that it its probably at least a couple of hours work, might need two people, will need the use of some expensive machinery and, presumably, also the stump disposing of that sound far too cheap to me for a proper job, if it really is a tree and not an oversized shrub!

Goingmadddd · 06/08/2026 16:42

Yes good price

gamerchick · 06/08/2026 16:44

It's a decent price.

You could always try and dig it up yourself. You'll quickly come round I think.

gamerchick · 06/08/2026 16:45

And dispose of.

PhilosophicalCheeseSandwich · 06/08/2026 16:47

I'd say that's reasonable.

You can hire stump grinders if you can and want to do it cheaply, but the effort doesn't seem worth it to me.

Ok thank you - just wanted to get a view! Very helpful thanks.

Actually cheap IMO and I'm in the NW

CallmePaul · 06/08/2026 18:14

Cheap. I've done some myself couple of yrs ago& I just checked current rental prices & it's £84 (Inc vat) a day for the machine rental locally & no shorter rental periods on offer.

Hayfield123 · 06/08/2026 18:14

That’s a good price. I paid £200 ten years ago. I’m also in the south east.

utahsainthood · 06/08/2026 18:44

I will go for it then. Thank you

I paid £210 to get 3 conifer stumps ground out. Central Scotland

Northernladdette · 06/08/2026 18:48

Apparently the tips they use on the grinding machines are very expensive. It was going to cost us double to include stump grinding for nine leylandii. We didn’t bother and were assured that the stumps would soon rot down 😊

Lollygaggle · 06/08/2026 19:12

If you drill holes in stump , solitary bees will use it as nesting.

if you want it to rot down quicker if you can hollow out a bowl shape so that water sits in it that will help. Or hollow out even further put compost in and use as a planter.

Olderbutt · 06/08/2026 19:14

Quite a normal price, even in the Midlands

SylvanMoon · 06/08/2026 21:42

Does it cost more or less if you're just getting a stump removed or if you're having the whole tree removed? I'm asking because we have a plum tree that has died and would like to plant something else in its place.

Depends on why it has died. If there are signs of honey fungus, planting anything else woody and susceptible is inadvisable.
It'll cost more to have a whole tree felled as well as grinding because more tools, often more people, more fuel, sometimes more insurance as well as more time

It costs extra to get stumps removed. I had 3 conifers removed and they quoted an extra £300 to remove the stumps. I waited for a few months before getting a different company in to grind the stumps out for £210

I’m in SW London and been quoted £500 to trim a large bush (no laughing please) that’s growing up the front of my house.

Droplet789 · 07/08/2026 13:18

We’re being charged £100 a stump and in the midlands. Get three quotes. A stump grinder from travis Perkins for the day is £90

Manthide · 07/08/2026 13:51

How long do they take to rot? We had 3 leylandi removed about 10 years ago and the stumps are still going strong! Our neighbour's insurance company have contacted us regarding some other trees that may be causing subsidence and have said they will remove the trees but not the stump. I was wondering how much it would be per stump.

Is that for removal or stump grinding?
