Now we are moving into Autumn I'm reflecting on the garden in Spring and Summer this year and certain plants have brought so much joy:

Tagetes tenuifolia 'golden gem' - the first time I've grown this from seed and it has been so beautiful, delicate deep yellow flowers and it is hated by aphids so the roses and dahlias I planted it next to have been aphid free for once. Last year my rose was covered in aphids, this year not a single one. Plus, the individual flowers on this tagetes last AGES - I have barely had to deadhead it at all, the flowers last for months! Three seedlings planted side by side created a big mound of beautiful yellow flowers - highly recommend!

Also, Coreopsis 'moonshine' - a very delicate little plant with very pale yellow flowers that I have dotted about the garden and gives a lovely bright pop of lightness amongst other plants.

Geum 'totally tangerine' - an absolute joy which really lifted the whole flower bed when it was in flower. Really missed it once the flowers were over.

Zinnas - never grown these from seed before but have been amazed at how big they got and what a long flowering season they have. Been flowering since the end of june and show no signs of stopping, they are really good value and so cheerful.

I could go on as there have been many more. What are your garden favourites this year?

David Austin roses - I have a few but Gertrude Jekyll , roald Dahl and Bring Me Sunshine have been the showstoppers of my garden this summer. They bring me so much joy!

BeaLola · 20/09/2025 10:56

Definitely my DA roses - Gertrude Jekyll and LD Braithwaite have been particularly exceptional this year.'

My wisterias - not been in too many years and first year of really god flowers

My agapanthus - they have been amazing and a very good display all summer and still flowering

SeaAndStars · 20/09/2025 11:26

My penstemons have been fantastic this year.

Chasingsquirrels · 20/09/2025 12:32

This year has been;

  • lilies (which I always love),
  • agapanthus (which I've had for years but never flowered before and were magnificent this year), and
  • dahlias (which I didn’t used to like but starters growing a couple of years ago).

My smoke bush, Cotinus Royal Purple. It’s given so much interest and structure.

My acers continue to do well, one is more hush the other tree.

My silk tree has had some beautiful flowers on it this year.

i have three wisterias and one had a second flowering this year, never seen that before. dh has been pruning and training the buggers over recent weeks as they are a bit wild and not covering the pergola in the way he wants.

I have a lovely ground cover rose and that’s done very well this year.

butidid · 20/09/2025 12:41

What a lovely thread
I second "totally tangerine" geums, last forever and an absolutely joyous orangey pink colour
My 'Little miss Figgy' is looking good too

Endlesswandering · 20/09/2025 12:53

I’m likely going to sound boring as I’m newish to gardening and don’t know the names of many of my plants! But my newly established veg patch has brought me the most joy this year. So far I’ve only harvested about 6 tomatoes and some lettuce but it’s been the process and learning that I’ve enjoyed. The sweetcorn has been my favourite to watch grow and is almost ready to harvest. Tomatoes have brought me lots of joy because of their scent; it’s taken me right back to being little and helping in my grandads greenhouse!

Flower-wise my wisteria has had the best year of flowering yet and looked stunning in May. One of my fuchsia’s also flowered beautifully after some very rough years! The rose bush also had its best year since we’ve been here and flowered much more and for longer than last year, despite attempts by the aphids to destroy it 😂

BadActingParsley · 20/09/2025 12:56

Tangerine geums were a find for me so reliable and look great with purple alliums.

this year I’ve fallen for begonias non stop, blowsy and cheerful and have been nonstop.

my fig tree fruited for the first time since our last hot summer.

muddyford · 20/09/2025 12:57

My camellia 'Lady Vansittart'. Plastered in flowers. Some red, some white, some white splashed with red and some pink with beautiful delicate veining in white. All on one plant.

DisplayPurposesOnly · 20/09/2025 12:59

I got a new beech hedge in the front garden in February. It's a joy 😊

PlanetSaturn · 20/09/2025 13:03

I’m not the biggest fan of yellow flowers … but rudbeckia (which seeds itself all round my garden so I let it be) has just looked magnificent backlit in late summer/autumn afternoon light. The luminosity of it makes me so happy.

Plantatreetoday · 20/09/2025 13:06

Not so much in the garden but this plant inside is doing really well on a west facing window.

Does anyone know what it is ???
We inherited it from my MIL

I have been enjoying colourful foliage in particular this year. Coleus with mixed green, pink and purple leaves. A variegated leaf pokeweed that is all speckled and has white flowers. Some lovely pink striped ornamental maize. Although we didn't have many blueberry fruit this year, the leaves are currently spectacular.

FurForksSake · 20/09/2025 13:31

@Plantatreetoday it’s a paintbrush lily. Or so apple tell me!

Wow thanks

How did you ask apple ?

FurForksSake · 20/09/2025 14:24

Screenshot and saved to photos. I then looked at the photo and you get a little leaf symbol or an I symbol which gives you information. If that doesn’t work choose the bottom left menu and I can search on Google. I have downloaded the Google app onto my iPhone.

I'm immensely proud of my dahlias, they are still looking brilliant and genuinely make me smile every time I look at them.

newrubylane · 20/09/2025 14:51

My DA rose "Wedding Day" was absolutely stunning this year - a wedding gift. By far my favourite thing in the garden. Will shortly be popped back in a pot ready to take with us when we move (hopefully) next year.

padronpepper · 20/09/2025 14:53

My sunflowers 🌻

FurForksSake · 20/09/2025 14:56

We’ve had some good sunflowers up at my allotment. My 10 year old grew them with help from my MiL.

longtompot · 20/09/2025 18:45

I agree with you about Zinnias @Magicpaintbrush Mine are still flowering like crazy and aI have had so many cut flowers for the house. Also sown from seed and will feature again next year.

Gaura for the little white flowers bobbing about. I'm trying to get some cuttings to root to try and get more plants. I want huge drifts of them

China Aster. Just started flowering this past week or so and I think will take over from the zinnias. Really lovely flowers and their scent almost remind me of rhubarb

Cosmos. First time in my garden and sown from seed. Wowzers, so many flowers! The bees love them which is a bonus for me.
I also bought a chocolate cosmos plant and that is gorgeous, but has very different leaves to the usual cosmos

Night scented stock. Realising one balmy summer evening (remember those? ;) ) the wonderful scent I could smell was those. Will grow so many more next year

Green centre sunflowers. Beautiful little sunflowers with multi heads on each stem. Still flowering now and doesn't look like it will be stopping any time soon.

Salvias. I grew several hot lips from cuttings and have a purple one bought several years ago but no idea what name. Along with the chocolate cosmos I bought three more salvias and they have settled into the garden very nicely.

Wisteria flowered amazing this year, and a clematis we bought last year was full of little blue flowers

Nemesia Wisley cream, which I buy several of every year from my local market, is still flowering in a hanging basket along with some Mexican fleabane, and still smelling of vanilla

Mexican fleabane is starting to what I hoped it would, and spreading everywhere. Love it.

This year has been the first time that I have spent so much time and effort on tne borders and they are really showing it. I have learnt a lot and know I need to plant up larger blocks of each plant and repeat through the borders to get a more dramatic effect

NotMyRealAccount · 24/09/2025 21:08

The tiny tender fuchsias I bought at 8 for £10 have done really well and I have a better idea of which varieties to choose next year.

BigHouseLittleHouse · 24/09/2025 21:19

This year I have loved having self-seeded snow-white marsh mallow flowers all over the place. They put on such a show and flower for ages, and I got excited when they popped up somewhere I didn’t expect them!

Our cosmos has also been fabulous - I planted lots and lots of seeds so every border seems to have cosmos bobbing about somewhere. I have one border still full of cosmos! It is such a simple and cheap plant to grow and once you get it to start flowering it just keeps going - fantastic value until that first frost kills it off!
