Can anyone identify this white shrub please?

I planted this shrub in my garden about 10 years ago. I wasn't impressed and thought I'd got rid of it, but I must have left some remnants and now it is back!
It's about 8 feet tall, is flowering now (june) and has creamy white flowers which are quite sparse. It looks a lot like a privet, but the leaves are longer and pointier. The flowers are scented, but not very nicely!

Can anyone identify this white shrub please?

Japanese mock orange?

Seeline · 22/06/2025 16:34

Native/wild privet

Native/wild privet

No, definitely not privet. I remmber paying good money for it, I think it may have been bought from a specialist nursery.

My app says it's a privet.

Myrobalanna · 22/06/2025 16:50

A variety of Choisya?

Ilovemyshed · 22/06/2025 16:52

Could it be one of the larger varieties of Hebe?

Stillamum3 · 22/06/2025 16:53

Mine tells me it's a Smilacena stellata, but the flowers aren't quite the right shape and that appears to be a short thing - this is quite tall!

Definitely not a Choisya, but thanks for the suggestion.

It's a skimmia. sorry, not sure on spelling, will try and find a pic😁

Day blooming Jasmine?

Not a Hebe either - privet is the thing it looks most like to me, but the leaves are much narrower, pointier and crisper than a privet - I think they are evergreen.

Is it a Cotoneaster variety? The bark looks like one I have to hack back every year. The leaves are right (though I couldn't tell you which one I've got - I took it over when we moved in). Not sure about the flowers though. Mine are white, but not quite the same.

I don't think so, sorry. The flowers have only four petals and a short tube behind. The are only about 8mm across but bigger than the common privet.

It's a stumper! Kind of looks like a daphne, too, but it's the wrong time for flowers

Flicitytricity · 22/06/2025 17:25

Not s skimmia then?

Stillamum3 · 22/06/2025 17:27

I wish I could remember where I bought it! I remember choosing it for being evergreen and having white flowers and for suiting my acid soil, but it is definitely not worth its space! Will have to have another go at getting it out! Thanks everyone for trying!

@Stillamum3 I think it might be ligustrum japonicum.

GertrudeJekyllAndHyde · 22/06/2025 18:00

The flowers do ressemble those on my common-as-muck privet, so I’d go with Yamadori’s suggestion of ligustrum japonicum. Other suggestions (Choisya, skimmia etc) definitely not.

@Stillamum3 I think it might be ligustrum japonicum.

although it doesn't look to me like the pics online, but sometimes they can be misleading. Anyway, it's definitely not worth keeping, so I suppose it's all academic anyway!

@Stillamum3 not being snotty, just checking my posts can be seen by you😁
I have this plant, and I'm fairly sure it's a skimmia japonica, as posted earlier. I'll find a pic...

Flicitytricity · 22/06/2025 18:24

Skimmia japonica

Brachylaena neriifolia ?

CrystalSingerFan · 22/06/2025 19:07

Another one voting for privet. They're out now, here in the SW. The flowers are strongly scented. Are yours?

GertrudeJekyllAndHyde · 22/06/2025 20:41

Yes; admittedly the example of ligustrum japonicum shown on the RHS website has rather narrower leaves, but I still think it’s the best bet.
