Alternatives for David Austin rose 'Munstead Wood'?

SilverMau · 16/06/2025 21:24

This is my favourite rose. Unfortunately, it is discontinued and I had wanted to buy another one. I am going to try to take cuttings, but I also wondered if there is a good alternative that is similar. The alternative suggested by DA is much more of a scarlet red, and it is the deep, dark red that I love so much (plus the fragrance is gorgeous).

No help but I have these pink David Austens which I’m also in love with!

I have this rose, if you send me idiot proof instructions about how to take cuttings, I could send you some. I’m in Norfolk, just in case you’re local.

NeedANewOne25 · 16/06/2025 21:34

Oh sorry, I see you already have one!

NeedANewOne25 · 16/06/2025 21:35

Peter Beales is down the road from me too!

narniabusiness · 16/06/2025 21:38

I’m not aware of any rose quite like Munstead Wood. All the others I know with that colour are not repeat flowering.

WinWhenTheyreSinging · 16/06/2025 21:43

Sorry OP, there is no alternative. Don’t know why they’ve discontinued this fabulous rose.😡

(Helpful🤣)

Pootles34 · 16/06/2025 22:09

I thought it was because it was becoming susceptible to disease?

SabbatWheel · 16/06/2025 22:18

I have one it smells lovely but dear me it's vicious! V thorny.
I have Thomas a Beckett too but he's not as dark and the fragrance isn't strong.

Thank you for the kind offer.

Yes, I have one but this will be my first attempt at cuttings, so any tips are gratefully received!

It's such a shame. Is there any hope that they will bring it back?*

*wishful thinking. 😭

Thank you for the suggestions. 🙂

It is a great shame if it was issues with disease that caused the discontinuation, as I guess that will make it less likely that they will bring it back.

I love my munstead wood but it is definitely much more of a diva than my other David Austin’s. It sulks at every opportunity.
Mine is grafted onto dogwood rootstock so will be interesting to see how vigorous your cuttings are.

narniabusiness · 17/06/2025 07:10

Just to confirm that it was disease issues that caused it to be withdrawn- mainly rust. I was at David Austin rose gardens recently and it’s not even in their show gardens anymore.
I’ve not grown Alfred Colomb but it was used by Jo Thompson in her show garden at Chelsea this year.

I’ve not been successful yet, but have only tried with some of my late father’s roses. Managed not to kill his rhubarb 😃.
I’ve been to Beale’s fairly recently and didn’t spotted anything that is like MW. They do have some spectacular ones though. Their open garden was last weekend but I might pop in this weekend as it will be at its best now and I can take a look (but must leave purse at home 😂).

SilverMau · 17/06/2025 08:53

I'd love to be able to visit a rose grower and choose in person. I will research it and see how possible it would be in reality.

OK. I guess I might need to learn how to graft too!

Quite a few DA roses seem to be discontinued. I have A Shropshire Lad (gorgeous peachy pink climber) which flowers vigorously & repeatedly every year, but is also increasingly suffering from black spot which I assume is behind it’s discontinuation. It’s a real shame.

On a possibly related note, has anyone else noticed that it’s harder and harder to find DA roses in garden centres? When I got my Shropshire Lad it was easy, now the only place I seem to see them is online. All the garden centres round my way stock other brands.

SilverMau · 17/06/2025 18:56

I have just been to the garden centre after work today and I asked about David Austin roses. They said that they can only stock a small selection of DA's range and that these are the more common ones. Any rarer or special ones are reserved for the DA website or for buying in person at DA.

Sitting in my home office and the scent of Munstead Wood is reaching me at my desk on this lovely day. There really is no substitute ... !

TwilightZoneRose · 21/06/2025 16:09

I read that falstaff is similar

TwilightZoneRose · 21/06/2025 16:13

I found this useful when I was looking for a burgundy rose. I ended up choosing twilight zone.
