Alternatives for David Austin rose 'Munstead Wood'?

This is my favourite rose. Unfortunately, it is discontinued and I had wanted to buy another one. I am going to try to take cuttings, but I also wondered if there is a good alternative that is similar. The alternative suggested by DA is much more of a scarlet red, and it is the deep, dark red that I love so much (plus the fragrance is gorgeous).

Thought this was a nice bloom today, especially as it's looking autumnal out there.

Beautiful

I’m a rose newby, about to buy three roses.

Would any rose people like to advise me? What does repeat flowering mean?
what’s the difference between climbing and rambling?

I have picked some out I like- scented and nice colours. I don’t know what else I should be thinking about!

I saw an almost blue/purple one recently I’m trying to track down.

I’ve had a miniature rose covered in blooms this week. It was moved from a pot earlier in the summer, as it wasn’t doing well, so it got off to a late start. Now it’s absolutely covered. It seems to be two plants as well, which I hadn’t realised, so I’ll split it next spring.

This has been an absolute joy for me this year ❤️ gorgeous colour, amazing scent, and has flowered so many times throughout the summer (and is still going). It’s called whiskey Mac. This is my first year of having a garden, so my first ever rose, and it’s really been such a pleasure!

That is a stunner! I love the range of colours. I might rethink my choices 🤣

I’m going to need a bigger garden, I think.

Is it a David Austen, @gardenershelp ?

Is the brand important? You do hear people talking about david Austen’s.

Repeat flowering - you deadhead (cut off the flowers that are losing petals) and the rose will produce new buds which then flower. Some roses, if deadheaded regularly - will keep flowering for months.

Climers Vs Ramblers - I have found that Ramblers have more flexable stems and can be trained over large arches or up trees. They are however, very 'wild' and take effort to keep where you want them. Climbers are a bit easier if you want them to grow up a smaller arch, trellis or obelisk. EG, if you have a 2m obelisk, choose a climber that grows up to 2m and it's a bit more controlable, although pruning is still required. I think Climbers are more likely to be repeat flowering with bigger flowers, although Rambers have groups of small flowers which gives a lovely 'covered in blossom' effect.

Another thing to consider is rose hips. Some roses (if you don't deadhead the last flowers) will develop hips which are attractive in their own right, giving interest to the rose after it has finished flowering. IIRC, single flowing roses are generally more likely to have hips.

No it isn’t, I got it from a local plantery (but I believe it’s available online, and possibly in other places)

PrizedPickledPopcorn · 03/10/2025 21:11

Thank you @SilverMau , that’s really helpful. I try and read ‘types of roses’ and lose the information as I go. (Tea roses, floribunda, etc).

However I know a lot more than I did an hour ago. And have found the David Austen gardens on a map, and am planning a visit.

I thought I was ready, but now have so many in my basket it may take another session before I commit!

I ought to choose one with hips, as neither of mine have decent hips.

Floribunda are supposed to be easier, so that’s appealing too.

SilverMau · 03/10/2025 21:19

I have bought from David Austin and Peter Beales. Both have been good.

We usually go for pink or red, but we got Belle Du Jour from P. Beales and it is a lovely yellow, bush rose. Harlow Carr is a nice pink, shrub rose from D. Austin, but my favourite is still the discontinued Munstead Wood. 😭Having said that, the rose that has been spectacular in the drought this summer was For Your Eyes Only (P. Beales) which just flowered its heart out for months.

None of these are climbers though, so may not be what you are after.

It would seem I’m after… all the roses. All of them.

I want a standard, and a floribunda. A blue/purple one (rhapsody in blue, blue for you?). A climber…

I have a pink one and a white one, and in the back garden a miniature yellow one. So I now think apricot, blue and something else… and scented. All scented.

PrizedPickledPopcorn · 03/10/2025 21:28

Gosh, for your eyes only is stunning!

SilverMau · 03/10/2025 21:29

How about adding a moss rose to the list? 😆😉

It really has been amazing this year. There are a few roses - often with eyes/eye in the name - that have that lovely darker on the middle colouration.

I have several Beale’s roses. When Covid happened one holiday was refunded on my credit card and I spent lots of it on roses and other things for the garden (their garden centre is just down the road from me). I wasn’t working and gardening was a thing I could do. Lots of purply ones, and a yellow and red one I call rhubarb and custard. It was rather an extravagance but they all seem to have done well. The munstead wood is the most spectacular though.

I got Belle de Jour this spring too. I love it.
I've got Desdemona (white /blush pink)
St Ethelburga (light pink, lovely scent)
Twilight Zone (burgundy/magenta)
Just ordered Lark Ascending (apricot)

I like the look of the magenta and white striped King's Rose

TwilightZoneRose · 07/10/2025 10:44

There's an old rose called Tuscany Superb which is supposed to smell lovely. I think it just blooms once for about a month, but worth it if you had a big garden with plenty else in it. (I have a small garden so like long blooming plants)

Yes. I'd love to see one

I'm no expert in roses at all, but from a search I have found it appears you can either get a rose that has the look of MW or the scent, but not both in one rose.
DA website suggests Thomas A Becket, and they say it's fruity similar I guess to MW, to get the scent as a replacement and on their DA Facebook suggested Falstaff which has a similar look.
I wonder if planting them next to each other would give the illusion of both the look and scent?
