Why isn't my Amaryllis flowering

It's got some absolutely lovely glossy green foliage but no sign of a flower bud yet.

What am I doing wrong?

As much as I would love to cast a spell on my lovely bulb to get it to produce some flowers, I was sort of more interested in why it isn't doing it already.

Thank you for your rather irrelevant contribution though which I've obviously reported as spam.

My Amaryllis usually flowers up to two times a year, though nothing so far. But it now has a fairly large new offshoot/ new bulb.

bloodredfeaturewall · 05/01/2025 09:37

is it a new bulb or one that you had for a while?
mine flowers at different times each year.
after flowering I give it a good houseplant feed and let it slowly die back by reducing and then stopping watering.
after foliage has died back start watering again and it flowers a couple of months later.

I had no idea you could keep them and do this. I have always put mine on the compost after they die down the first time. Thanks for this message.

I have several and was reading that some will put up the flower spike, followed by leaves, whereas others will produce all the leaves first. No idea why though. I planted several bulbs in Nov. Some, have 60cm leaves and nothing else. The others, seem to be starting with the flower spike! I'm sure yours will flower soon enough.

In the off season, apparently you should use a liquid feeder then keep them dark and cool to go dormant. You can then revive them to use again.

Ones you grow are ready to flower as soon as you plant them.ones that you’ve grown on tend to behave like spring flowering bulbs

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 05/01/2025 10:58

I kept mine from last year, it was outside in the summer, I watered and fed it, then the leaves went yellow and I put it in the garage. Took it out in November, brought it in, watered it and now it’s slowly coming back to life.

Looks like the spammy post between my first two posts has been deleted and now I just look like a loon who talks to myself about casting spells Grin

Thanks to everyone who has replied. It looks like I just need to be patient...

Following with interest as my family member tells me hers that she saved from last year is on the move. Yesterday nothing - today a sudden 2mm spurt! I've suggested she takes a photo once a week to check its progress.

Maggiethecat · 07/01/2025 01:08

How long since you started it off? Does the bulb feel firm rather than squishy?
They can take a few weeks to produce a stem.
Placing it somewhere warm (and light) may also help.
I recently bought some reduced to clear ones from M&S (£8 to 80p). The one on the left has been near the radiator for 6 days but started off looking like the one on the right, bought today.
Patience usually pays off with them.

@Maggiethecat’s picture shows the clear difference between flower (a dividing line down from the top) and leaf (no dividing line) - this difference is visible from almost the first appearance.

Flowers are fatter, but that’s less easy to judge.

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 07/01/2025 09:08

Patience and be careful not to overwater.

JC03745 · 10/01/2025 17:26

I added a post upthread, but took a photo. Both pots have 3 bulbs in, and other than 1 being white and the other red- they are apparently the same amaryllis variety! New bulbs this year, potted on the same same day, same soil, same light etc.

As you can see, 1 has spent 5 weeks, pumping out 1m of glossy leaves- and no sign of a flower! The other pot showed nothing till a week ago. I actually thought the bulbs might have rotten, then suddenly this week, 2 flower spikes are coming up! I really think amaryllis just have minds of their own!

It will. In spring.

MereDintofPandiculation · 11/01/2025 08:47

@JC03745 Well, with all those leaves, it should do you proud next year!

ArghhWhatNext · 11/01/2025 08:52

Mine (bought this winter) has produced immense, glossy leaves but no flower. Sunny and reasonably warm windowsill. So I have every sympathy but cannot advise I’m afraid.

I have one that is on it's third flower spike, and another that is finishing flowering but producing another flower spike now. Do you cut off the dead flowers (I did this for the first plant but have left the stems), or should I cut back the whole stem once the flowers have finished? I'd be grateful for any advice!

Ps both plants were bought as bulbs from Lidl and have been amazing.

bloodredfeaturewall · 11/01/2025 09:11

I only take it off once it's shrivelled down. all that fleshy stem feeds the bulb.

Boiledeggandtoast · 11/01/2025 12:52

Great, many thanks.

BobnLen · 11/01/2025 13:17

When it does flower, be careful it doesn't get top heavy, mine was in its full flowering glory, broke at the base of the stem and toppled, I think we should have taken off the more going over flowers. There is one stem left now just flowering, about 2-3 weeks after the first one

That happened to me last year with a different bulb. I'd nurtured it for so long only got it to fall over and the stem to break. It was so disappointing.

I rescued one but using a trainer, the other I put the flower in a vase, it looked rather pretty and lasted a long time.

ErrolTheDragon · 14/01/2025 10:43

I've got one from last year that's doing nowt. I confess I'd stuck it in the growhouse and pretty much forgotten about it but I brought it inside maybe oct or nov, the bulb looks quite plump with some green on it so it seems not to be dead. But no signs of growth. I may have made a mistake (other than not doing the right things with it last year) by initially putting the pot on the kitchen floor which is quite cold. It's been on the table quite a while now so reasonable room temp but still no joy. Is it a lost cause?

Maggiethecat · 14/01/2025 10:49

Noooo! Never give up on them (well…. you know what I mean) if the bulb is firm.
It may need another cycle of dormancy before flowering.

Persevere.

Mine was like that for a long time but is now growing a beauty for flower bud.
