Why isn't my Amaryllis flowering

It's got some absolutely lovely glossy green foliage but no sign of a flower bud yet.

What am I doing wrong?

Well, it won’t be your fault if newly bought, flowers would have been laid down last year

Oh, I wasn't really thinking I had done something specifically wrong. Just pointing out to the OP, that some just decide to produce foliage first, long before any flowers- as per her original question.

I just found an insect which at first sight looked like a bee crawling on a leaf near my still unresponsive amaryllis bulb. The Seek app initially ID'd as a tree bumblebee (we've had those nesting in an old bird box in previous years) but then settled on it being a narcissus bulb fly, about which wiki says the larvae feed internally in tissues of bulbs of^ Amaryllidaceae^

Maybe I'd better bin it.Sad

Well you could always dig it up and inspect it before binning it?

@BeAzureAnt - a nice man at the garden centre who is the Amaryllis buyer tells me that the South Africans are currently breeding Amaryllis which will cope with the UK climate! We'll be able to plant them in the garden and leave them there all year!

I bought a very anaemic specimen from the fadden centre - they had a whole batch which grew in their boxes. The poor thing was pale and had a nasty bend in its stem. But it greened up and flowered beautifully. I was given a bulb for Christmas and it's currently extremely tall with a huge flower bud so I might get flowers this week.

The Amaryllis Man also told me that if the head looks too heavy to use a plant support as that will stop the stem breaking. (I have them for some of my gladioli so on hand if needed!)

@SleepingisanArt I just saw this as was away for a while. That is so cool! Amaryllis in the garden (at least if the slugs don't have their way)

Support are important. Sarah Raven sells some pricy ones, but I think a similar shape could be made from a coat hanger.

I hope you get some gorgeous flowers. I planted 7 cut rate bulbs in a large pot, and 6 are coming along. The next few weeks will be glorious.
