Neighbour has put some bamboo next to our shared fence...

In planters, so no concerns about the roots or anything, but I think I'm being paranoid because we can we quite a loud family at times and I think they're doing it to block out some of our noise.
It's established bamboo and they've cut it so it's a couple of feet higher than the fence. It's sparse at the moment but my guess is it'll get denser,
Is anyone unreasonable here?

No

CaptainMyCaptain · 14/11/2024 12:02

As long as the roots are contained in planters then I can't see a problem.

TaylorSwish · 14/11/2024 12:10

If it’s in the ground it will fuck you up.
if it’s in a pot then it’s all good.

sarahsbd · 14/11/2024 12:12

Would you take this as a bit of a clue they want to block your noise out?

No, but they jut want a bit more privacy which is completely normal.

RandomMess · 14/11/2024 12:14

If you are loud shouty people or let your kids scream when playing then yes.

EmpressaurusKitty · 14/11/2024 12:15

It’s exactly the advice someone would be given if they posted on MN about wanting more privacy in their back garden.

Latevictorianpleasureseeker · 14/11/2024 12:17

Perhaps, given that you're asking i am going to assume you know you are in fact noisy.

Bamboo rustling on a quite day is quite nice to listen to.

converseandjeans · 14/11/2024 12:18

If you know you are loud then why are you carrying on with the noise? Can you try to keep it down a bit? I can't see how some bamboo would work with blocking noise out but it might help with privacy.

purplecorkheart · 14/11/2024 12:22

If you are so loud that you worry about its impact on your neighbour then you should be doing all you can to change this.

Saying that I planted Bamboo in a container near the fence with one of my neighbours. I did it because I like the look of bamboo.

@sarahsbd
Probably yes, as another person said up thread this would be the advice given to deal with noisy neighbours, their screaming kids etc.

Hiddenmyname · 14/11/2024 12:28

The roots can burst through pots, depending on the type of pot. We have just had to pay a lot of money to get ours removed (planted by previous owners) as it was bursting through the fence and through next door's property. Keep an eye on it.

sarahsbd · 14/11/2024 12:33

I will keep an eye on it. I'm just feeling a little bit guilty now about them going to such an effort to block us out! It must've cost them a few quid where the plants are so well established

They may be using it as a screen... I really miss ours, I love how it looks, but we'd never have it again as it just grows wild. It was a great visual screen for us, but not sure it reduced noise.

DogInATent · 14/11/2024 12:43

It's not being paranoid if you know you're a "loud family". But it has strong MCS vibes if you assume it's all about you.

Bamboo isn't a great option for sound mitigation, it's better as a privacy screen. Providing it's strongly contained.

Hualalai · 14/11/2024 12:45

What ways are you loud? Maybe they just like bamboo. They certainly are being unreasonable.

HollyKnight · 14/11/2024 12:48

If you know you are a loud family why are you only feeling guilty now?

We have bamboo in planters. It's to hide the look of the ugly shared fence. It does nothing to dull the noise of our loud neighbours.

Ruekrn · 14/11/2024 12:54

Maybe if it is on a patio they just prefer the look of plants than a fence. It could add noise of the rustling to drown you out if you know you are a loud family and you are potentially affecting the neighbours you should probably keep it down a little.

What do you mean by you will keep an eye on it? Sadly for you, there is no high hedge act here, bamboo is a grass and so does not fall under that law. And honestly, it isn't that expensive to buy. I had some work done that meant I needed some 6ft hedging to fill a gap, I paid £70 for each cherry laurel. Bushed out beautifully.

sarahsbd · 14/11/2024 12:57

Well I think we will certainly try and keep the noise down going forwards, so if they wanted to convey that message then it has worked.

She means she will keep an eye on it because it grows wild and can burst out of pots. Any bamboo that close to the boundary is risky even in a pot.

Fedupwithneighbours · 14/11/2024 13:07

As you might guess from my username… I planted bamboo in planters for privacy after my neighbours put a trampoline right next to the shared fence

woffley · 14/11/2024 13:12

I think if you are a noisy family who spend a lot of time in the garden you might not realise the impact it has on quiet neighbours. If the neighbours were also a noisy outdoor family then you might not notice it.
Everyone has the right to enjoy their garden, especially children. I would say two things stand out as antisocial . One is that high pitched shreek that some girls do and the other is noise in the evening after a certain time.

Ruekrn · 14/11/2024 13:25

@anon199900 ah that makes more sense.

idrinkandiknowthings · 14/11/2024 13:33

I'd personally be delighted with screening. I live in the centre one of three houses and although my neighbours are decent I'd definitely prefer to sit at my garden table without being seen, particularly if I have no make-up on!

MrsSunshine2b · 14/11/2024 14:07

So if you're right, they've taken steps to solve the problem without making it your problem. Everyone wins, surely?
