Neighbour has put some bamboo next to our shared fence...

In planters, so no concerns about the roots or anything, but I think I'm being paranoid because we can we quite a loud family at times and I think they're doing it to block out some of our noise.
It's established bamboo and they've cut it so it's a couple of feet higher than the fence. It's sparse at the moment but my guess is it'll get denser,
Is anyone unreasonable here?

Are the planters stood on a hard surface such as paving slabs or concrete or are they on the ground or wooden decking? They are notorious for their roots escaping out of the drainage holes in the bottom of pots, and unless they are on an impermeable surface they will spread into the soil.

They're in wooden planters, like rectangular ones on top of paving slabs.
They look like and I'm not concerned about the roots and if they did come out I'm sure they would cut them because they're quite tidy people.
I'm more concerned that they've put them up because of us, but also without saying anything so it kind of shows why and it's made me feel very awkward when I next see them type thing!

The roots can burst through pots, depending on the type of pot. We have just had to pay a lot of money to get ours removed (planted by previous owners) as it was bursting through the fence and through next door's property. Keep an eye on it.

This happened to us. Our neighbour's bamboo broke through the pots and made its way to our garden. It went mental.

Look nice

You can actually buy bamboo that doesn't spread. We have bamboo to screen our pergola, I think it's very pretty and sounds lovely when the wind rustles the stems. I don't understand the panic, you can also mow it, we inherited bamboo in our last garden at the end by the grass and you can just mow it when you mow the lawn!

Well, if they’re resorting to extreme measures to block out your noise, and you’re quite aware of this, you’re obviously being unreasonable not to dial it down.
You can’t seriously have thought they were?

Would you take this as a bit of a clue they want to block your noise out?

No. They just want more privacy - a more cosy, closed in garden. I'm the same.

ivegoneswimming · 14/11/2024 14:32

@IthinkIamAnAlien honestly the bamboo we had was crazy. It even broke through the pavement.

Bamboo was used to torture people in the past.

TheBalkanBreakfast · 14/11/2024 14:35

I very much doubt it is that, we have put bamboo in planters next to our fence adjoining the neighbours garden - but only because the bamboo is more aesthetically pleasing than the bare wooden fence. We love the look of bamboo, it is hardy, perennial and makes a pleasing swishing sound in the wind. I honestly wouldn't read anything into it. We also used planters as it is invasive.

What sort of noise are you making?

DogInATent · 14/11/2024 15:57

What sort of noise are you making?

Deep, sustained, booming sounds.
Only acceptable after around 9 or 9.15.

woffley · 14/11/2024 16:21

My son lives in a rental and the neighbours planted a bamboo screen. It looks lovely.
When I saw it I suggested he informed his landlord. Sure enough it has burrowed under the flower beds, right across the lawn and up through the patio, a distance of about 15 metres. So far.

mondaytosunday · 14/11/2024 16:28

No. Plus bamboo is a fairly ineffectual sound barrier.

Would you take this as a bit of a clue they want to block your noise out?

Most people don't want to listen to neighbours when they are out in the garden.

They just want quiet and privacy, like most people. Dont read anymore into than that.

Unless, of course, you are unreasonably noisy, in which case try and dial it down a bit.

FanDann · 14/11/2024 17:56

You're overthinking this but if you think you are too noisy then be quieter.

MissSookieStackhouse · 15/11/2024 07:18

I wouldn’t have thought bamboo would block out any noise at all, but it is good for screening and privacy. Does your garden overlook theirs? Do you have a huge, ugly (and noisy) trampoline or other eyesore they don’t want to look at? If you’re worried about noise, then keep it down, I’m sure the neighbours would appreciate that regardless.
