It’s an acer. There are lots of varieties.

ForPearlViper · 23/10/2024 14:05

During the spring and summer you can get some varieties in all the supermarkets, etc, very reasonably and they grow just fine - I have a big collection. Sometimes, with trees, it is better to start off with a smaller plant to get them established.

They can be a bit fussy though and in my experience don't like to be anywhere that might get windy. They grow very well in containers which also means you can move them around if they look a bit unhappy.

It's an acer. I've got one in my garden. Lovely when the sunlight shines on it.

MereDintofPandiculation · 23/10/2024 19:35

That’s the autumn colour It’ll be either green or deep mahogany during spring and summer

Alevelnamechange · 23/10/2024 19:37

As pp have said, it's an acer, it could be the variety called a Japanese maple.

We have one in our garden, it's no more than 5ft tall, and perfect umbrella shape. I love it.❤️ 😍 💖 ❣️ 💕 💘

Thanks everyone, I had forgotten I posted this but glad I checked, will be on the look out for one. Can anyone recommend a type that will go read? Thank you

Acer palmatum 'Osakazuki' is (I think) the one I've got, as a PP says, also known as a Japanese Maple. Lovely red-tinged early leaves, which deepen into fully dark red as they mature. Hope this is helpful. x

Jasmin71 · 24/10/2024 13:45

Acer

Mozza77 · 24/10/2024 13:50

We have a butterfly acer that has pink trunk and leaves, lime green leaves in summer and bright red now. We also have a 20ft one that in currently graded red, orange, yellow a green as you go up the tree and it’s beautiful.

Yes , Osakazuki probably has the best autumn colour.

SleepingisanArt · 24/10/2024 14:33

They prefer to be sheltered from the wind so please keep that in mind. Where we are the wind can be ferocious so all the acers in the area are planted against fences in sheltered areas of the gardens!

ErrolTheDragon · 24/10/2024 15:21

There are a lot of different varieties to choose from - apart from the colour variations there's a considerable range of size so read the label carefully.

Mysterian · 24/10/2024 15:27

Lots in the garden centre. Not all like full sun so read the labels.

And look out for a little trophy on the label. An RHS AGM is an "Award Of Garden Merit." given out by a top gardening society to plants tested to be really good.

MereDintofPandiculation · 24/10/2024 15:53

Two species are known as Japanese maple, Acer japonicum and Acer palmatum, and there are dozens of species of both. There are also dozens more species of Acer. I’ve got at least 6, ranging from one which is nearly 2m wide but not much above knee height , which is currently brilliant red, to one which is twice the height of my neighbour’s house, with wonderful green and white striped bark.

So when you’re thinking of buying one, google the variety name to see what you’re getting.

They're in my local B&Q half-price atm for around 6' tall and about £80 - this is cheap compared to what they would normally cost at a garden centre. As they're expensive, make sure you get one and look after it well. Most like partial shade and sheltered from wind/hard frost/wet. I've got some from supermarkets that sell them for about £4 for a 9cm plant (around 45cm tall) but they're very slow-growing so don't expect much growth for a long while.

MereDintofPandiculation · 29/10/2024 10:08

Not all Acers grow tall. I’ve a blood red dissected leaf Acer which is 30 years old and hasn’t yet reached a metre. My neighbour has one like the one in OPs picture, about the same size, started off about 0.7m and grew to its current 2m in about 5 years I think.

VenusClapTrap · 29/10/2024 15:57

I bought a beautiful peachy orange one at the Chelsea Flower Show last year. The specialist Acer nursery I bought it from told me they need to stay in pots until they’re eight years old. This restricts the root growth so they put more effort into top growth. This explains the rather lacklustre results I’ve had from planting out young Acers into the garden in the past.

ErrolTheDragon · 30/10/2024 09:37

We've got a couple of the small type with very dissected leaves, dark red in summer, brilliant red in autumn. This one was planted last year, when DH took it out of the pot most of the compost fell off, leaving a very small amount of root. We kept it well watered (next doors 5yo was drafted into help while we were on holiday, he did a splendid job with his little watering can!Grin) and rather to our surprise it seems to have thrived.

I think if you buy a shrub or small tree that's very potbound with spiralling tap root and old fibrous roots it can be better to chop a lot of it off to encourage new root growth ... perhaps the supplier had essentially done that or maybe we were just a bit lucky!

Love the colour.
Love autumn reds. Westonbirt Arboretum in autumn is incredibly beautiful.

Roryno · 30/10/2024 13:04

It looks very like my Japanese maple. It’s probably 20 years old and about 5’ tall. It was in a pot for five years then planted in the ground. Five years ago the tall evergreen next to it blew over and it’s really flourished since then. It’s this colour for about a week then the leaves blow off! (we are quite exposed, but it’s out of the prevailing wind.

I have a few more pot grown acers from supermarket sales (often bought for £1 half dead) that are doing quite well. They don’t like strong sun or wind, I find.

@Roryno beautiful

ACynicalDad · 30/10/2024 15:27

You can do a google image search and it might even tell you the variety

Hotafternoon · 30/10/2024 15:36

I have a dark burgundy coloured one called Acer Garnet. It is turning orangey red as it's autumn and losing its leaves.

I love it.😃
