Are these elderberries?

I threw in a mixed native hedging pack down one boundary when we moved in a few years ago, as a wildlife friendly place holder as much as anything.

I think these are elderberries but I'm not familiar enough to be sure.

Anyone?

DH is off work and he's wandering in and out talking about elderberry wine.

Would be better with a photo of leaves as well as fruit and the obligatory banana for scale, but they look very like it to me.

cheezncrackers · 21/08/2024 15:10

Yes

LiterallyOnFire · 21/08/2024 15:15

We have no bananas (🎶 ) but I'll get a photo in situ.

I doubt there's a lb there anyway, so I hope he's not serious about wine.

I'm putting in runner beans next year to give him a crop to occupy him.

If you do a Google photo search of the leaves (may accept berries) it will tell you.

Elmeux · 21/08/2024 15:21

They don't look like elderberries to me.

PilgorTheGoat · 21/08/2024 15:22

Elderberries are usually in fuller clusters I thought? It’s been a looooong time since my mum took me picking though lol

Years ago, when we were young and poor, we used to make our own wine.
Elderberries make a great wine - a full bodied red!😋

Seeline · 21/08/2024 15:22

Doesn't look like the right leaf to me

Igneococcus · 21/08/2024 15:23

Those leaves don't look like elder leaves.

Katherineryan1986 · 21/08/2024 15:23

No, they're not elderberries - don't make wine with them!

Not sure what they are but elderberries are more clustered

LiterallyOnFire · 21/08/2024 15:24

Okay thanks everyone.

Google photo search says common dogwood, which is ringing a slightly lounger bell with my memory of the hedging pack, I think.

LiterallyOnFire · 21/08/2024 15:24

Louder^ bell.

Elderberry's look like this.

Butwhybecause · 21/08/2024 15:25

No, I don't think so.
Google Lens reverse search suggests they are Cornus Sanguinea (dogwood) but double check.

I wouldn't be making wine from them!

We have an elder tree in our hedge and usually the birds strip the berries before we can get to them.

CalicoQuince · 21/08/2024 15:26

Definitely not elderberries! The leaves in your second photo are completely different to elderberry leaves. Shame, as the wine idea sounds nice!

Igneococcus · 21/08/2024 15:26

It's a very common shrub but not elders.
I make bakewell tarts with elderberry jam rather than raspberry jam and its fab.

I agree - now you've shown us the leaves, they're definitely not elderberries 😓

Really? My front hedge is all edible apart from some dog rose. I might throw some elderberry in to fill the patchy bits. Poor man is desperate for something to conjure with. I'll give him the job of piercing the sloes for gin, but I can't see too much else this year.

Ah now jam I can get on board with.

Look like Whinberries to me. Great in a pie!

WetBandits · 21/08/2024 15:27

Give them a sniff! If they smell like your Dad, they’re elderberries. Grin
