Best beer for slugs….?

A few years ago I tried to set a slug trap with very nasty cheap stuff. The slugs were not interested at all. I’ve tried again with good beer, and have been rewarded with many customers.

What beer are you serving?

That’s interesting. My slugs get a 99p bottle of Lidl beer a week. Quite a lot seem to drown in it and quite a lot don’t and are still eating my plants. Mind you it’s constantly getting diluted by rain at the moment.

Guinness is good

Darker · 28/05/2024 12:17

I have noticed that the trap in the front garden has two snails. While the three in the back garden have many more. Same beer. Mystery.

Cheapest Sainsbury's bitter.
Full traps means they must like it.👍

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 28/05/2024 12:50

I'm disappointed that they're not eating the Salt 'n' Vinegar crisps I provided with the beer. I think that I will give Pork Scratchings a try next time.

Carlsberg going down well tonight.

I am not sure I should risk Heineken, in case it refreshes the parts I want permanently defreshed.

GQT recently referenced a trial for the best beer - a non-alcoholic Irish brew apparently. They didn't say the name (BBC sensibilities ) - maybe non-alcoholic Guinness?

Isitchill · 29/05/2024 20:50

Sainsburys basics here.

I've been filling my traps with a mix I make in an empty lemonade bottle. Nearly fill the bottle with warmish water add a tablespoon of flour, a teaspoon of sugar and teaspoon of dried yeast. Close, shake then open and leave overnight to brew. It smells very beery. Fasten, shake, add dollop of washing up liquid, swirl to mix in, pour in traps.

It does work and costs pennies which means I can empty and refill the traps before they get stinky.

Possibly not as good as actual beer, I'd have to carry out an experiment.

Marmite (diluted of course). Works brilliantly. I was amazed.

LifeInTheRaw · 30/05/2024 01:13

Ooooooh love the diluted Marmite recipe.
I've got a jar of proper Marmite that will NOT spread in any circumstances... I Havel been meaning to chuck it, but on bin day, I keep forgetting !
At least if it works for slugs, it won't quite be the waste of money I was regretting.
I think that my garden has the highest population of slugs ever, and sure it would qualify for Guinness book of records.
Hate them so much, coz I'm trying so hard to grown my own veg, which is not cheap, is hard work normally, but with age and a poorly husband, it takes even more effort.
The slugs feel like a slap in the face of my attempts.....

Totally agree how disheartening it is to see the seedlings just disappear overnight, time and again. I am now doing regular slug-runs to my veg patch to physically remove them.

Put out one of my new slug traps out last night and put the Marmite solution in it.

Oh my god!!! I cannot actually count how many are in there this morning! So much cheaper and easier than beer. I will be sticking with this in future.

Darker · 31/05/2024 10:40

Was it just Marmite? I have some marmite lurking somewhere.

This is a very timely thread for me. Just popped down my allotment and the slimy wee shits have all my salad. I love Marmite, but I'm willing to make that sacrifice... 😡

MrsGhastlyCrumb · 31/05/2024 10:47

*have had. They're not holding it hostage...

Teaspoonful of Marmite, dissolved in hot water. I let it cool before putting it out in the trap.

Darker · 31/05/2024 12:45

Marmite cooling in a jug now….

OP, you saying about your “slug run” made me giggle, coz my husband wants to know if it’s the same little buggers that crawl their way back, or if it’s a new “pack” of destroyers.
I told him that slugs are hard to identify in daylight let alone after dark.
They probably ate reoffenders, AND they likely bring their mates with them, as the salad you’re providing has got famous.
More seriously, I saw a YouTube guy make a recipe of finely chopped red onions, garlic and some Cayenne pepper in water.
Leave steeping for seven joi think it was.
strain off the liquid, and put in a spray bottle.
He says it gets rid of slugs snails and other bugs in general.
No nasty chemicals, and I’d feel safer using that if I had animals or even toddlers around…
I’ve not used the Marmite recipe as yet as I’ve not been too well, but reading above pp positive experience, I’m deffo interested.
I wish I had hedgehogs, as don’t they feed on the little slimy blighters?

LifeInTheRaw · 31/05/2024 15:14

(Seven hours) oooops!

Ready to try this too!

Rough idea of how much water to 1tsp marmite?

Screamingabdabz · 31/05/2024 15:15

They asked a Hosta grower at the Chelsea flower show what she used to keep
them away and she said ‘night hunts and a garlic wash’.

According to the RHS, about 10% of a hedgehog’s diet is slugs, whereas it’s about a third of a frog or toad’s diet. On the other hand, hedgehogs eat more food in total than frogs and toads, so I wouldn’t be surprised if the quantity eaten by a hedgehog were as great as the quantity eaten by a toad.

Other predators are birds, other slugs, beetles, centipedes and a type of fly
