so... I am one those people who kills plants (despite really trying) and this year moved into a lovely place with a bit of a garden... don't worry, I have hired professionals to ensure there isn't absolute catastrophe. but just looking around for planting ideas for next year especially in terms of low sun growing flowers or fragrant plants... annuals or perennials...

so far I have got tulips (midnight, purple, red, white and apricot) and aliums. the garden has general purple tones.... I believe we already have hydrangeas, rhododendrons, roses and a few other plants I don't know the name of. all ideas welcome! tia

Narcissus actaea poeticus, narcissus geranium, tulip rems favourite, tulip Queen jewel is what I've planted in pots for window ledges. I also have grape hyacinths and snowdrops already planted.

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 13/10/2023 12:18

If you're going with blues/purples then definitely grape hyacinths. And Siberian squills - wonderfully intense blue.

thank you so much!

I'd also add some Irises. Very pretty and would fit the purple theme nicely.

'Ice Cream' Tulips in my ice cream cone planter 😉 🍦

Lots of fancy Daffodils & Tulips and a few Alliums

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 13/10/2023 15:15

I have a Farmer Grace window open right now. Just drooling over the tulips.

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 13/10/2023 15:17

Can't decide if I want tulip Lemon Beauty or not.

Help?

KohlaParasaurus · 13/10/2023 15:22

An assortment of purple and orange tulips, some fancy narcissi, and around 200 iris reticulata crammed into troughs. Some white alliums that I don't have a home for yet. Crocuses for naturalising. And I already have loads of snake's head fritillaries happily multiplying in a boggy area of lawn.

Harrysmummy246 · 13/10/2023 19:52

Crocus, allium, grape hyacinth on top of what you're already getting.
Don't plant tulips yet, wait til we've had a couple of decent frosts

Maybe snow drop for contrast.

As for what I've got. I've got the 500 crocus in, just 100 snowdrops, about 300 grape hyacinth and a sh** tonne of tulips. But it's a fairly large garden.

And then there's the 12k bulbs I've got at work to deal with (my fault as I ordered them but i'm currently up to my eyes in pumpkins)

therealcookiemonster · 14/10/2023 10:55

@IdaPolly love these... think I will go for the Narcissus and tulip queen jewel. thank you so much!

Edited

I think I already have those.... part of the struggle is not knowing the name of the plants already in my garden lol. I do love the blue of the siberian squills. don't think I have those....

Honey Allium (soft coppery pink droopy ones) and rose Allium plus the usual tulips and daffodils. I just need squirrel defence recommendations.

MintJulia · 14/10/2023 11:02

A mixture of Alliums . Purples, yellow and white.

SwayingInTime · 14/10/2023 11:02

The droopy alliums are the bees favourites and match my prettiest Geum

Can I blame you for my purchase of 300 crocuses, 50 nectaroscordum and 30 tulip sylvestris yesterday evening??
Also have some allium to put in.

therealcookiemonster · 14/10/2023 11:03

@KohlaParasaurus that sounds lovely. :-)

My tip on Farmer Gracy is to select 'naturalising' - then you can justify the spending to yourself as they'll spread, self seed, multiply and cost almost nothing per plant :)

Well, I did buy that Lemon Beauty and some other bits as well.

Looking up nectarsordium right now, so there might be some blame going your way later.

napody · 14/10/2023 11:07

It's the honey 'allium' mentioned upthread. I have some already, they're gorgeous and happier in part shade than alliums too.

I see we have a professional in the house :-) yes that is what the gardener said. tbf I am not planting anything myself as I am sure I would mess it up. just going to buy it for them to plant.

stupid question for you... I noticed there were snow drops and crocuses in the garden already last spring, do I have to plant them again or will they come back again?

your garden sounds like a really big project, but must be gorgeous! and 12k bulbs - eek.

I thought they did look like an alium. My garden's tiny though and I already have a tulip addiction.
