so... I am one those people who kills plants (despite really trying) and this year moved into a lovely place with a bit of a garden... don't worry, I have hired professionals to ensure there isn't absolute catastrophe. but just looking around for planting ideas for next year especially in terms of low sun growing flowers or fragrant plants... annuals or perennials...

so far I have got tulips (midnight, purple, red, white and apricot) and aliums. the garden has general purple tones.... I believe we already have hydrangeas, rhododendrons, roses and a few other plants I don't know the name of. all ideas welcome! tia

I now mainly plant bulbs that naturalise in the garden. I'm going in to year 5 now I do another couple of hundred a year and it is starting to get fairly impactful. I love aconites and snowdrops mixed under trees and shrubs.

Oh and English Bluebells & Snowdrops, obvs!

I see we have a professional in the house :-) yes that is what the gardener said. tbf I am not planting anything myself as I am sure I would mess it up. just going to buy it for them to plant.

stupid question for you... I noticed there were snow drops and crocuses in the garden already last spring, do I have to plant them again or will they come back again?

your garden sounds like a really big project, but must be gorgeous! and 12k bulbs - eek.

They will come back each year (barring disease and squirrels). And will probably multiply.

@SwayingInTime omg I love the rose aliums, definitely getting a few of those! squirrel defence? oh no... Will they eat my bulbs?

there are quite a few obese ones loitering around the garden. they always seem to have a nut on their person..... didn't realise they will become a problem...

@SwayingInTime they definitely are loved by bees. I apparently have an 'angry' bee hive at one side of my front garden.

I'm getting all the usuals (alliums, crocus, daffodils and so on) but have also splashed out on some foxtail lilies and some crown imperials.

I had a few foxtail lilies last year and they were amazing, so getting some more for this year. Crown imperials are not my faves (and bloody expensive), but ds loves them so...

Just put in a couple of hundred daffs. 😰

Going to photograph them next spring to see what areas were successful and where I want to thicken up next autumn.
Only did borders this year, going to do the grassed areas F&R next year.

Relatively new to being professional but my garden is rather neglected sadly. I have had my perceptions of scale totally shifted

Yes snowdrops and crocus will comeback

I thought they did look like an alium. My garden's tiny though and I already have a tulip addiction.

Yeah I don't pretend to know the botanical specifics but think they were named allium and reclassified a few years ago, so think they must be very closely related- they definitely smell pretty onion/garlicky! They're so, so pretty aren't they? Love an 'in-between coloured' flower :)

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 14/10/2023 15:06

They are pretty. How tall di they get?

olderbutwiser · 14/10/2023 15:12

Definitely add early stuff - snowdrops, crocus, iris. They are all pretty indestructible. Snowdrops are, in my experience, best bought immediately after the flowering season - the dry ones are pretty unreliable.

Early daffodils are a must. I have a shady bed under a deciduous tree and in the spring it's full of little daffodils and iris (and hellebores and epimidium and pulmonaria

I'm off to put in an order of Tulipa Acuminata which are my absolute favourites.

@Cotswoldbee I am definitely taking photos next spring, and summer... can't remember what exactly grew where last year and this is making it impossible to plan!
