I have put in some carrots and onion sets today, just wondering what everyone else has done?

OP posts:
sophy · 06/03/2008 17:38

Nothing yet. Broad beans, carrots ready to go in on first nice gardening day.

WishIWasAWalton · 06/03/2008 20:44

Tomatoes and peppers in the propagator.

Parsnip seed and seed potatoes chitting.

Rocket and spinach in the greenhouse

Onions and garlic in from last nov.

I have had no luck with carrots, anyone with any secrets to share?

BoysOnToast · 09/03/2008 22:07

iwiwaw - i wnet ot a veg growing talk at my local gerden centre this week (oh the excitement of my life these days) and his tip for carrots was to grow them in good veg growing compost in a tub trug with drainage holes dug in the bottom. or, if theyre in the ground, and its stony, to go for a stubby variety. ive also heard that planting roses near them will help with pests...
oh, and that if you spot any blight at all, chop it off asap to stop the spores spreading. and if theres a blight warning (on radio 4??) if you cover with fleece, it should protect it.

WishIWasAWalton · 10/03/2008 20:47

BOT - What's a tub trug?

ChopsTheDuck · 11/03/2008 10:07

tomatoes, courgette, aubergine, chillis and cucumber in propagators, now starting to transfer them to pots. Have garlic and lots of herbs in greenhouse.

ChopsTheDuck · 11/03/2008 10:08

my chillis are taking a long time to grow, I'm wondering if I am overwatering them. Do chillis prefer drier soil?

Fillyjonk · 11/03/2008 10:09

potatoes

fruit trees

shallots

nowt since dd2 born in feb though

Fillyjonk · 11/03/2008 10:10

oh i should start off the tomatoes and courgettes indoors now, shoudn't I?

how is it MARCH already, fgs?

Mung · 11/03/2008 10:41

I have planted some early peas outside, but they are doing nothing.
Parsnips and beetroot planted outside already
Chillis, tomatoes, basil, carrots, sprouts all on window sill.

I feel I should be doing more though.
Should I do courgettes indoors now too then?

snorkle · 11/03/2008 10:57

not sure about courgettes yet to be honest - they are very frost sensitive, so shouldn't go outside until mid May.

fishie · 11/03/2008 14:39

courgettes
borlotti beans
sweetcorn
peppers

it will all DIE.

GooseyLoosey · 11/03/2008 14:42

Mung · 11/03/2008 14:46

Nothing like a positive mental attitude Fishie

WishIWasAWalton · 11/03/2008 21:25

Mange tout, peas and courgettes in wee pots in the greenhouse to-day. Pricked out and potted on tomatoes.

Beenleigh · 11/03/2008 21:27

I'm chitting potatoes, hadn't really thought about all the rest yet....damn........ if I get around to it, I am planning spaghetti squash and tomatoes

cece · 11/03/2008 21:33

tomatoes in seed trays on windowsill. I have Gardener's Delight, Striped and Italian tomatoes. Also got some Tumbling Tom whihc I might do at the weekend...

Potatoes are chitting at mom.

Picke dup some poly tunnels today off of freecycle so I am hoping to do some planting outdoors at the weekend - parsnips, carrots, beetroot, pease and broad beans...

Courgetttes - I will do these in seed trays indoors nearer to April.

nkf · 11/03/2008 21:37

Potatotes chitting. Nothing planted but I've bought the seeds and done some weeding.

yogabird · 20/03/2008 22:35

in greenhouse, purple sprouting is shooting, sweet peas & cauli too. Planted in plastic croissant boxes with lids for an extra layer of protection. onions too. Weds did aubergines, toms, cucumber (first time) coriander, peppers. All covered in glass in the greenhouse. My mint (well established) seems to have died and disappeared!? Shall i buy some more or will it appear soon?

FrayedKnot · 20/03/2008 22:45

Sh*t, nothing yet

Peers out into darkness at newly allocated veg plot which needs digging

bettythebuilder · 20/03/2008 23:16

yogabird, I think your mint could well reappear, it's tough as old boots

I've planted various tomatoes, and the seedlings have sprouted (a couple of cherry varieties, gardners delight and some beef toms that I got free at our local RHS garden last week- hurrah!)

Chillis, but only a few days ago and they haven't appeared yet.
I have tried some beans and peas in jam jars on the window sill (more for dd's benefit, honest) and rather suprisingly, they are all sprouting.

Oh, and dd has a little pea seedling that she planted at the RHS grow your own veg event, which we have to check 3 or 4 times a day

My friend and I have started our own GGC (glamorous gardeners club- hey, there are only 2 of us in it, so no-one else knows that we are not actually glamorous).

I think it's marigolds with carrots to keep off carrot fly isn't it? We had quite a bit of success with carrots last year, growing them in a box of compost mixed with sand with some netting over the top.

So far we've got rhubarb coming up on the allotment, a late variety but nice and sweet so we don't mind waiting! We've got broad beans under the cloches and planted onion sets, shallots and potatoes last weekend. The strawberry bed is showing signs of life too. The raised beds are covered over and waiting for a bit of warmer weather so we can start off some beetroot, radish, lettuce etc.

On the kitchen windowsill I've got tomatoes, sweet peppers, chilli peppers, brussel sprouts, cauliflowers, sweetcorn, butternut squash, pumpkin, parnips and courgettes. Luckily it's a long windowsill .
