No snow for us either, I thought it was just the eastern side which was getting it?

GertrudeJekyllAndHyde · 03/12/2023 13:33

Yes, we’re usually the last to get snow here, although we did have a few flakes on Friday.

ThreeRingCircus · 03/12/2023 14:33

We had snow yesterday but it rained overnight and is a bit warmer today so it's all melted. I'd rather have it that way then brown slush for days, although I do love fresh snow.

It’s Cumbria that was hit last night (west, for those unfamiliar with the disposition of the northern counties of England)

But you can’t get a proper build up like that! I loved 1962/3

Lovely snow there. Absolutely torrential rain here after yesterday’s frost. Spent a happy half hour watching a tiny wren poking about in the pots on the patio. (She’s just behind the hyacinths 😂).

I must admit to not looking at a weather map for a few days and being southwestish (Bristol) rather than my usual Lancashire.

WobblyLondoner · 16/12/2023 12:13

Oh blast - have just found a box of bulbs in the cellar. I know I can plant the tulips out and they'll probably be ok - but any views on Narcissus Thalia??

Vegemiteandhoneyontoast · 16/12/2023 12:28

Plant them anyway, @WobblyLondoner they'll probably just flower a bit late.

WobblyLondoner · 16/12/2023 13:56

Thanks @Vegemiteandhoneyontoast. I've bunged them all in a huge container, tulips deep down and the narcissi on top. Now just to make it fox proof ...

LaurieStrode · 16/12/2023 14:14

Love the little wrench, @BestIsWest

I have one lately; hoping she stays around.

I planted some purple & pink tulip bulbs.

WobblyLondoner · 16/12/2023 16:39

Very pleased to have got out today - planted all the bulbs, wrapped the banana & stuffed some straw in the tree fern crown - the only winter thing I've not finished is taking out all the dahlias from their pots. I might leave them in this year..

100% this!

Ive got two baskets of mixed bulbs (tulips, tête-a-tête, muscari) that I have been meaning to plant out since the end of Oct Blush procrastination and rain to blame! I'm going to try to get them into the soil tomorrow.

they've got two chances Grin

I've got about 3 hours of leaf collecting left and that'll be it for another autumn. Borders and compost heaps are piled high and leaf net full to bursting, so it feels good to have got it all done and dusted. DH said we're getting a leaf collector for next year which is a good plan, as it really takes far too long every year and it uses up most of our weekends.

TheGander · 17/12/2023 14:21

Got to the allotment yesterday after having covid. Mowed the little lawn patch, removed some brambles. Cut the spent flower stalks off the lavender. Just doing that lifted my mood.

Seaitoverthere · 17/12/2023 16:21

Cut foliage from garden to make a wreath and went out looking for cyclamen for my pots which turned into a trauma down a pretty much impassable lane but got some in the end.

BestIsWest · 24/12/2023 16:20

Festive Plant id anyone?

My neighbour has this which is full of berries, about 5 feet tall and looks great right now. I had thought it was a Skimmia but I’m not sure (I’ve managed to kill 2 this year).

Also, what’s my best way of taking a cutting of it. (Neighbour just gave us this bit of it).

Thank you! Oh, I was hoping it was something a bit faster growing. I bought another very small male and female a few months back but I fear it will be years before they approach that size!

daisychain01 · 25/12/2023 18:10

Merry Christmas everyone.

I feel a bit naughty because I managed to sneak out when nobody was looking and do some leaf raking and also planted up 4 tubs of mixed bulbs in double quick time. Mind you I cheated by getting all the bulbs sorted yesterday and quality checked (a few were a bit squishy so I lobbed them) and the compost put in the tubs ready to go.

It stayed dry and calm which was very pleasing as it was forecast to rain most of the day.

Wed will be biblical rain and high winds about 50mph 😔

Mine grows and thickens quite quickly @BestIsWest I have to give it a good pruning once a year as the branches spread and reach. I've got a male and female near each other.

GertrudeJekyllAndHyde · 25/12/2023 18:17

Merry Christmas one and all!

Did anyone get any gardening related presents?

I got a gardening gift voucher and a big bag of crocus from a dear friend of mine who sent them in the post about a week ago. I got them straight in the ground because the soil was very moist and they were already sprouting, so that another thing to get excited about in the Spring. 😊

when raking the leaves by our external stone wall I notices there were big clumps of daffodil shoots coming up where it's very sheltered

BestIsWest · 25/12/2023 19:28

That’s good to hear @daisychain01.

I got some Felco snips and a basket of hyacinths.

ErrolTheRednosedDragon · 25/12/2023 19:29

Yes, a hori hori in a leather sheath. DD and DH seemed unduly discombobulated when I brandished showed it to them earlier.
