Clematis: dead, isn't it?

😢

Hampshire, no signs of life, second half of May.

I think that real cold snap in winter did for it, among quite a few other old plants.

Wisteria appears to have survived, so I guess I'll replace it.

I’d cut it back to 18” high, give it a good feed and water well. If it’s a late flowering version it will probably recover.

I had one in a pot that looks completely twiggy and dead so pulled it up. Must have missed some though as just seen it is growing again and looks much healthier.

It's dead Dave

Postmanpatscatisfab · 20/05/2023 17:21

Oh dear, RIP, looks like you need some strong secateurs or a priest.

Redshoeblueshoe · 20/05/2023 17:29

Cut it right back.

Fordian · 21/05/2023 10:19

Okay, I think I'll cut it back as suggested and see what happens!

Thanks.

It was completely dead.

18" cut down splintered into shards.

So now it's all down, root dug out.

Wisteria, here I come...

Every dead plant is a planting opportunity

This is v weird. My clematis, which was here before we moved in 10 years ago, looks dead this year. AND my friends one too.

ReallyShouldBeDoingSomethingElse · 21/05/2023 22:58

Mine's on its second year of looking completely dead. Might have to reach acceptance. It's really sad when you've been nurturing it for years!

Blogdog · 21/05/2023 23:24

I have the opposite problem - I found a random clematis growing in a spot where there hasn’t been one for at least five years! Am a bit perplexed but curious to see what it looks like if/when it flowers.

ComeIntoTheGardenMaud · 22/05/2023 00:32

I’ve had two missing-presumed-dead clematis reappear this year. It’s sad when plants die but, as has been remarked, it creates a space for something new.

Fordian · 28/05/2023 21:52

I have 3 other clematis in my garden as well.

Two definitely, though slowly -survived. One didn't.

Wisteria in today.

I think mine has died - it's 15 years old and has always been a beauty - this year nothing, not a leaf or bud.

Frankley · 28/05/2023 23:03

My clematis, about 10 years old, looks dead too.

Brunnera · 28/05/2023 23:11

Yep it's been a bad year for Montanas. Our 20 year old one, absolutely huge normally is just twigs this year

So many people have lost their well established clematis, montanas in particular.

WaitingForSunnyDays · 28/05/2023 23:13

Mine's dead too! Beautiful big montana. Obviously something over the winter that has come for them all.

RudsyFarmer · 28/05/2023 23:17

The frost killed mine this year too. Along with my 15 year old palm tree.

DorritLittle · 28/05/2023 23:18

My DM’s clematis also looks randomly dead this year.

I am in Hampshire and mine was lovely -#unhelpful

LizzieSiddal · 28/05/2023 23:26

Same thing has happened to my asparagus plants. Not a single spear this year, which is so sad.

Gooseysgirl · 28/05/2023 23:37

Interesting - I just had this convo with my MIL this evening! We lost our clematis (Montana) this year too... it was probably around fifteen years old, it was there when we moved in. MIL was also saying she lost one as have some of her friends. It most have been the cold snap 😕

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 31/05/2023 22:30

I've lost quite a few plants this year, I think if the heat wave didn't kill them the frost did 😕

Also lost two clematis's, a hydrangea, an established shrub fuchsia and I realised today my verbena look dead as well.

I have gone out and bought 5 new plants today though 😉

BreehyHinnyBrinnyHoohyHah · 31/05/2023 22:35

This is interesting. My Montana isn't dead but it has certainly struggled this year. It's normally a massive thing but this year it's quite sparse. And I live in Cumbria where we had -10 and below for multiple nights over the winter.

Malbecmoron · 31/05/2023 23:00

Two dead montana here
